Bijoux in the News

Pieces that feel special but without over-the-top glitz make sense right now, says L.A.-based jewelry designer Devon Leigh. “People are reaching back to the earth and to things that happen naturally,” she explains. “There are a lot of negative things happening in the world, and ideas found in nature are balancing and comforting.” Leigh uses geodes — plain on the outside, glittery crystal on the inside — in her work, slicing them for one-of-a-kind earrings and necklace pendants.

I’ve always had an appreciation for naturalistic jewelry, and Devon Leigh has some wonderful designs in utilizing natural materials and motifs.

Her website also offers a selection of lovely pieces for under $200. Just in time for Mothers’ Day!

  1. I like the necklaces- especially that amethyst slice- and the prices are very good! Prices are low b/c they gold plate which is fine for necklaces, but I go for real gold for bracelets, which wear differently. (I’ll be posting soon on jewelery of natural materials.)

  2. Duchesse – I think with earrings too one can get away with gold plate, as they don’t get a lot of wear and tear. Looking forward to your upcoming post!

Bonjour Madame – so much better than “mall jewelry,” n’est-ce pas?

  3. Rita – I love anything that showcases geodes or minerals in a more natural state. I was a rock hound as a kid, and I think it’s carried through.

materfamilias – oh I wish that necklace were in my closet to issue a throwdown to my scarves! I’ve had to content myself with admiring from afar for several months now.

  4. Miss Janey – glad you enjoy. I discovered Devon Leigh when we used to have Sunday breakfast regularly on 3rd St. right next door to one of her boutiques. I was always drooling over the pieces in the window as we walked by.

La Belette – yes, for designer pieces they are quite affordable.

  5. Phantom Minuet – I lifted that first picture from the LA Times article, but am not certain who the designer is. (It’s not clear from the article.)I just thought they were gorgeous pieces.

Imogen – actually, no, at least not this year. I’m trying to discourage mon mari from gifts as we’re about to go on an expensive vacation.

Belle – aren’t those neat? I think the gold dipping takes them up a notch from something you’d find at a crafts fair.
