And speaking of fall colors you can wear now…

If you’re looking for an alternative to black bags, I’m now convinced that a burgundy bag goes with just about everything. When worn with other neutrals, it adds color, but can also “play neutral” when worn with color. (Think burgundy and pink, burgundy and blue, burgundy and orange…)

Chloe crossbody
Chloé

This “Georgia” cross-body is a stunning bag…understated but still distinctive, and the leather is a deep, rich color. It’s surprisingly light for a Chloé, large enough to use as a day bag, but not too large to wear going out in the evening. Yes, it’s spendy, but I think it’s classic enough to have some wardrobe longevity.

This one from Vanessa Seward has similar timeless styling, and a textured leather that should stand up to wear.

MICHAEL Michael Kors

This camera bag style cross-body is a bit smaller than the first two, but still has room for a wallet, keys, phone, compact.

This Brahmin shoulder bag in color Black Cherry Melbourne is eye-catching, and “punches above its weight” price-wise I think. That shoulder strap is removable and the bag converts to a clutch.

Do you have a favorite color for bags? Or do you stick to black?

  1. I love a burgundy bag. Got a great deal on a Marc Jacobs one in the Notdstron Anniversary Sale. These are all lovely. Especially that Vanessa Seward one. On another note… a few days after the post where you mentioned your tooth issues I had dental work done. Several weeks later, many throbbing late nights, and days sipping only tepid liquids they find they can not figure out my problem, nor help, except tp say that it will go away…. eventually. So I feel your pain… I really do:)

    1. Susan, the one thing that finally helped was having the dentist do a second application of a fluoride adhesive/paste around the gum line of the affected teeth. It seemed to seal up those sensitive roots and nerves after a couple of days. They did one right after the cleaning, but it was the second application a few days later that finally did the trick. Good luck and hope your pain subsides soon. Tooth pain is the worst!

  2. I love burgundy bags! I’m looking for a new fall bag and now I have my eye on the DKNY bag that you posted. I wish I had some of my classic Etienne Aigner bags from the eighties-their signature color was a beautiful burgundy.

    1. Funny, Andrea … I was just thinking the same thing. I had a couple of great Etienne Aigner bags way back when.

  3. I don’t wear black bags, as they look a bit harsh and incongruent with my natural coloring which is pretty pale. Burgundy looks gorgeous in a beautiful leather as your samples attest. Probably my favorite colors for bags that work as neutrals for me are: gray, olive, and a very light blush which goes with every color I wear. Blush is the color I went with last summer and this. For fall I’ll probably go back to a gray quilted bag with brown leather trim. Oh– and taupe is a stand-by as well.

  4. I love the idea of a burgundy bag. That’s what I would get if I were getting a new one this fall. I’ll stick with black for now, though. I have a terrific black Roots Grace bag that I use all the time, except for dress up when I switch to a red leather clutch. I’ve had this black bag for over a year and find that I’m not easily tempted to get anything else. But it does come in “beet”…

  5. I love the idea too. I wear lots of gray and black during fall/winter and think burgundy would look good with all my black shoes and boots. You posted lots of great choices. I liked the Mulberry bag and the others of similar shape. The styling in the photos above was inspirational too.
