Breakfast, Cardigans, The Queen and Some Other Stuff

friday miscellany

Just a few random things on my radar…

avocado toast

Yes, I’ve jumped on the avocado toast bandwagon. I’m a Joiner.

Avocados are in season and it seems almost criminal not to partake. They’re especially good on this sprouted grain flaxseed toast.

Fabulous After 40

I was delighted to be featured this week at Fabulous After 40. I thought Deborah asked some really great questions. Thank you again, Deborah!

v-neck cardiganThis little cardigan from J.Crew was a pleasant surprise. It’s generously cut, but the very lightweight cotton fabric drapes nicely so it doesn’t look boxy. Available in several colors, it could be a good travel piece for transitional seasons. It works as a middle layer underneath a jacket or a top layer.

I loved this picture of Queen Elizabeth and this quote that Alyson at That’s Not My Age posted yesterday:

Queen Elizabeth II

‘Don’t retouch my wrinkles in the photograph, I would not want it to be thought that I had lived for all these years without having anything to show for it.’

She’s not afraid to load up on the pearls, either.

Overalls…yay, nay or may? They’ve been piling up on Pinterest lately, but I think I’ll sit this one out.

What’s on your radar?

Bon weekend!

Since I have come to Mexico (7 weeks today), I have chosen avocados from the market to eat by spoon or on toast. They are so much tastier than the ones that we get in Canada. Your interview truly captures “the flavour” of your blog. Bon week-end.

Hurray for the Queen! She is so right. Do not try to hard to look young or it will backfire on you. Also, the overalls…….Duck Dynasty.

  3. April 24, 2015 / 5:14 am

The perfect breakfast! Starting a day like that can only make it a wonderful day! Peace! Cheryl

Hmm… back in the 1970s, I had a chrome-yellow, button-front jumpsuit. A hideous garment. Very inconvenient in public restrooms. Onesies are, I believe, best left to infants and small toddlers.

Love that pic of the Queen! Have a wonderful weekend. xox

Yum …that breakfast looks so good. I read the feature on you…it was excellent. Have a great weekend, Susan.

Just read the interview with you– excellent, and it was fun to see the compilation of all your different looks. I like your turn of phrase– you are your best spokesman!

I agree that overalls belong on the very young or those engaged in honest, hard labor on a farm or in the woods. Have never seen a mature woman whom the look flatters. Even the young model in the photo looks a bit contrived, to me.

Of course, there are the one-in-a-million style “savants” who can carry off even the most outre looks. Maybe someone like Isak Dinesen could have worn overalls chic-ly, on her farm in Kenya! Or Slim Hayward Keith, at her most rangy and California-youthful in the Forties.

Love the composure of the Queen– she seems to be as comfortable as an old woman as was her mother. That incredible heirloom brooch seems to be one she loves and wears often to complement her other luscious pearls.

I’m not interested in overalls, but I have been very tempted by jumpsuits. I loved them in the 80s, never found the bathroom “challenge” that big a deal and they’re even easier than dresses for One-step Polish. However, being in transition right now, I think I’ll probably give them a pass. I love the way Alyson wears them though.
Your breakfast is inspiring! We have weeks and weeks before that fruit is in season here. . .Enjoy your weekend!

Seriously want that Bon Jour bowl!

Avocados are so tasty and so healthy. I eat more of them now and enjoy them a lot. Good for you to spread the word.

Great minds;)! I love avocados, but generally eat them in a wrap with chicken, salsa, and a little cheese.

  12. April 24, 2015 / 7:58 am

Avocados…yes. Love them in our salads. Overall..nope. Never again.

Overalls and jumpsuits (another perennial “in” item) are a definite no for me because what do you with the top half when you use a public bathroom? I’d rather not have straps/sleeves dragging on floors that may or not be clean. TMI?

I’d eat an avocado per day if I had them growing in my back yard. Love them on salads, sandwiches, eggs, soups and dip!!!!

  15. April 24, 2015 / 10:52 am

Oh, avocados, every day at least one with toast and fruit for me.
Overalls, I don’t think so but I won’t say never.
And I enjoyed reading your interview. I especially loved your comment on how Americans also bring value to French lifestyle – it’s not all one way. Yes, great questions.

I wore the HECK out of a pair of Lilly Pulitzer overalls about 15 years ago…perhaps I’ll go and see if I still have them…I’m 51 and if I want to wear it, I darn well will! Whoo Hoo!

My daughter introduced me to this ‘avocado toast.’ She drizzles olive oil over it. I think overalls need a certain body shape and it’s simply an issue of geometry (and not mine). If I wore the black one above there would be tools and a welding helmet nearby! Loved the interview and how you make us feel like we won’t be completely out of our league as tourists in Paris. And my plan is to buy scarves, too!

  18. April 25, 2015 / 4:41 am

Great interview. Onesies of any kind, I’d just say no unless I was working in a job that required them (boiler suits). Too “pisse-minute” (too much espresso, I guess) and indeed don’t want any garment to touch the floor in public toilets. As for the Queen, remember that she is also a shortie. The net gives her height at 1.63 (5’4″) but if that ever was the case, it certainly isn’t now.

Jumpsuit and overall fan here, although I haven’t owned a pair of overalls in years, but love those black ones. Your interview was wonderful. Love the Queen.

No protein with that breakfast? As for overalls, good lord no.

      April 26, 2015 / 6:38 am

Shawn, good point about the protein. When I have this breakfast I usually have a hard-boiled egg as a morning snack, but it would probably be simple (and delicious) to add a poached egg to the top of this.

        April 26, 2015 / 7:31 pm

If I don’t have protein with my breakfast, I can feel my blood sugar get out of whack (not that I’m diabetic, I just feel when things are unbalanced). The rest looks yuuummy!

  21. April 25, 2015 / 6:04 pm

Shawn, lovely as that breakfast is, I’d want more protein too. Not the greasy “full English” or its North American derivatives, but some kind of lean protein. I’m capable of having a couple of sardines with breakfast, but there are other solutions, including vegetarian ones. If I don’t have protein in the morning, I get a headache.

    But how I want a “farm-fresh” avocado.

Overalls no! Been there done that and even the youngsters are wary of them… particularly one family member who wore them to a music festival and endured the portaloo challenge.
Love the way the Queen wears earrings, necklace and brooch… no stylist advising her that you wear one or the other but not all at the same time, but when the jewels are real and they are yours you can do as you like!

    Overall… PASS!

  24. April 26, 2015 / 12:25 pm

I made eggsalad on toast this week, with mashed avocado rather than mayo.learned in Brazil how tasty it is to mash avocado, banana, cocoa and milk for a breakfast or anytime pudding snack.
