I’m not saving this jacket for a rainy day…

Susan B wears a colorful water-resistant field jacket, jeans, sweater and sneakers. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Can you blame me? Even though it’s a technically a rain jacket, this colorful field jacket works nicely as a windbreaker too. Southern California has finally turned the corner into Fall. 🍂 Which means that our hot Santa Ana winds have given way to…cool Santa Ana winds. 💨

Susan B wears a colorful field jacket and Dean Davidson gold link jewelry. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

The earrings and bracelet (both gifted) are from Dean Davidson. I’m really liking brushed metals right now. They work well with more casual looks, and aren’t too “shouty.” I should mention that both pieces are really light, and comfortable to wear all day.

Do you have any bright outerwear in your wardrobe, or do you prefer neutrals?

  1. Beautiful colour jacket and looks good on you. Unfortunately not available in the UK. Not your fault, obviously, but … Banana Republic, if you follow this blog, kindly adjust.

    1. Me too! I have been on a mission and have located a Barbour and a Joules ON SALE (not in tangerine orange but more of a coral colour) on the House of Fraser website. Susan, love your website, which I found randomly while on Remodelista looking at design in France and their algorithm led me to you! I am also following Chicatanyage, 50isnotold and Prime Women. Forever young! Cheers!

  2. All my jackets/coats are colorful – lavender, plum, and teal. I do have one lightweight navy jacket too. I prefer to brighten up my day with flattering colors!

  3. Right you are, the jacket is such a happy colour, it will brighten up a lot of days and people.
The earrings and bracelet are so good. Love them. But I would let somebody make the bracelet a bit smaller for you. It sits too far on your hand and you will break it this way.

    1. I like it when bracelets slide over the upper part of my hand like that….and I have never broken a bracelet in my life of wearing them this way

  4. Love color! Just bought a hot pink puffer coat that I can’t to wear. Just check BR and the orange windbreaker is sold out in my size…bummer!

  5. I have a burnt orange leather jacket that I truly love (I wear it every opportunity I can). No other ‘colorful’ jackets/coats; it just doesn’t get that cold down here in MS. I do have a long puffer coat in navy that I wear when we go to really cold places when we travel (we always travel off season). I love this jacket on you, you just shine in it! It’s perfect for your climate right now.

  6. The style and colour of that jacket are great on you. Going out with something other than black does tend to lift the spirits. I have jackets in many colours and coats in navy, teal, pink, and burgundy. They get alot of wear in a cold and snowy winter.

  7. Ooh, great topic- I LOVE colorful coats. I have a short wool in bright pink, a windbreaker in bright pink and a very wild patterned Lilly Pulitzer terrycloth zip up in their breast cancer awareness print. If I wear a neutral coat, I always toss on bright scarf or gloves.
Your orange jacket looks great, especially with the jewelry.

  8. Filing this under G for “Great minds think alike.” I had been casually looking for a lightweight rain jacket for a while but didn’t want to spend a lot. (I know “a lot” is relative, but for me it mean > $100.) So when I spotted some Bagatelle rain jackets during a flash sale at Chico’s (online only), I pounced. I had a hard time choosing between the color-block options (red, green, or yellow paired with navy) and a solid navy one, but I decided to go with the latter, thinking it would be more versatile. Naturally, as soon as I cut the tags and wore it, Chico’s had another flash sale that included their own rain jacket. It was an adorable floral camo pattern and, most importantly for me, the darkest color was black. Between the two jackets, I’d pretty much have wardrobe covered (pun intended) for fall. The camo one has a removable hood, and it’s such a cute and striking jacket, I absolutely plan to wear it as a windbreaker. So not “bright” color-wise, but definitely makes a statement. Now all I need are sneakers that coordinate with it as well as yours do with your orange jacket!

  9. We can’t win in southern California. The fires are starting up again and the cold Santa Ana winds are as troublesome as the hot ones. This week marks the one-year anniversary of my house burning down, but the silver lining, if you can call it that, is that I have a new wardrobe. I discovered Poshmark. There are some Banana Republic things for sale there, some new with tags, but obviously not the latest styles like that cute orange jacket.

    1. Hello Kay- I’m sending you a hug. All the fires and loss that has stuck California are so sad to see and to keep seeing more and more it seems. Best wishes as you go forward.

  10. Love your blog because after all these years of thinking I’m a winter, I discover I look better in these beautiful warm colors that I have always loved. I agree that in MS, especially here on the coast, we don’t get a chance to wear many jackets but I have a apricot zip jacket that I love bringing out on a cold day, love the color on the shoes. Like icing on a cake!

  11. I’d love to see recommendations on very light breathable rain jackets for those of us in hotter climates

  12. Susan, I love the orange jacket on you. The color is perfect. I know the color would be perfect on me too. Now that it is 50% off at Banana Republic, I am thinking of purchasing it. You and I are about the same size. What size did you buy?
