Fresh & colorful sweaters to brighten up your winter wardrobe

In the midst of winter’s chill, why not infuse your wardrobe with a burst of freshness and color? Today I’m sharing some vibrant picks to brighten your look (and outlook). Here are some colorful sweaters and more that you can wear now and into Spring.

After last week’s “appetizer,” we’re now being served the main course of the Atmospheric River Special. (Fortunately I was able to get my sump pump repaired before the storm hit, so my backyard hopefully won’t flood.) When it’s cold, wet, and dreary out, I find I need the lift that wearing color provides. With the weather as it is now, that usually means a sweater.

Colorful sweaters to brighten your winter outfits

Winters, Eileen Fisher has really done right by you with the colors “Rhapsody” (corresponds to Fuchsia in your palette) and “Tulip” (bright Raspberry). This cashmere v-neck is available in both colors, sizes XXS-3X.

Autumns, this “River” color looks like a softer version of your Peacock blue. Sizes XXS-3X. (Also take a look at this one in “Flame.”)

On my monitor, this cashmere tee looks like Spring’s “Flamingo Pink.” (I have it on order, will update once it’s in my hands.) I think this could be a good travel piece. Wear it layered over another sweater, under a jacket, or on its own.

Here’s a budget-friendly cashmere tee that’s available in a bunch of colors. This emerald green is a good one for you Winters! Sizes XS-XL. Also:

  • Winters: Sapphire, Burgundy, Raspberry
  • Summers: Raspberry, Wisteria, Light Blue
  • Autumns: Camel, Spicy Mustard

I think J.Crew always has some of the best sweater colors that you won’t see elsewhere. Autumns, this is your “Pistachio.” Sizes XX-Small to 3X. (This sweater runs small, suggest sizing up.) Winters, check out “Magenta Grape” and “Neon Flamingo” colors. Summers, “Muted Orchid” and “Heather River” are good. Springs, the “Heather Peony” is your warm pink.

This is the longer classic fit cashmere crewneck, and this Utility Green is another great Autumn color. (Springs, check out “Neptune Green.” Summers: “Heather Neon Orchid.” And “Berry Red” looks like Winter’s Scarlet to me.) Sizes XX-Small to 3X.

Summers, here’s a pretty lilac shade for you. This ribbed cotton polo cardigan is available in sizes XX-Small to X-Large.

I love the Breton stripes on this cotton zip cardigan. This looks like a good Spring combo; Winters, check out the cobalt blue with green stripes.

One of Sézane’s most popular styles, this Gaspard cardigan can be worn with buttons in front or back. Lots of colors available in this style; Winters, here’s your Royal Blue. Sizes XXS-XXXL.

  1. Gorgeous colors, esp the Eileen Fisher options — however, it’s another year of cropped sweaters (EF’s “basic” or “cropped” length). From a design perspective, having that horizontal line go right across what is on many women their widest part is just not flattering — or even functional. On petite women, I get that a short cardigan often works well — but for taller women, it just looks like we can’t find clothing that fits. I cannot WAIT for there to be longer sweaters and other tops again! My .02.

    1. Bette, I feel your pain. I am 5’8” with large breasts and a long torso. I cannot wear any of this cropped nonsense. Waiting patiently until this fad passes.

    2. Am with you all! We taller women, especially if we aren’t flat-stomached, can’t wear this cropped stuff! Give me a nice long silhouette please

  2. Whoa – I love that you are incorporating more and more colors for specific seasons. I had my colors done last year, and I refer to my color pallet all the time when I shop. It helps me make the best choice and it saves me money (and a headache). It’s wonderful, thank you again. An Atmospheric River sounds horrible – good luck.

  3. I like the Madewell cardigan in Lavender and would consider it perhaps at a lower price point. It is not one of my best summer colors. The Neptune green in the J. Crew looks close to pastel jade so I might have to go check that out. It looks gorgeous! Thanks for this nice round-up. Your picks are always so stylish.

  4. Hi Susan, thank you for so many seasonal suggestions. Do you think a soft autumn could wear pistachio?
    Best wishes,

  5. As a petite, I like the cropped sweaters and jacket styles. Planning to purchase a few before they go out of style.
Not a fan of the dolman, dropped sleeves. With narrow, somewhat sloping shoulders, only inset sleeves work for me.

  6. Loved this post on cardigans. I have a question about the Gaspard cardigan. The website says order down. I usually wear a size large unless the item is oversized. I wear a size 10 in pants, size large in J. Crew lady sweater, size 38 DD bra. I would appreciate any insight you can give me. Since it’s from Sézane’s I would hate to have to return it because I ordered the wrong size. Thank you for your informative and lovely posts.

    1. Hi Roberta, I didn’t find the cardigan to be particularly oversized. I’m usually a size S in “classic fit” J.Crew sweaters. I ordered the XS in the Gaspard, which is more fitted on me. If I were to order it again, I’d probably side up to the S for a more relaxed fit. Hope this helps!

  7. I wish lilac looked good on me, but it tends to bring out the corresponding shade that lives under my eyes…. 😀
