3 easy outfit ideas with colored jeans

If you’ve been wanting to try colored jeans but aren’t sure how to style them, today I’m sharing 3 easy outfit ideas.

I don’t think getting dressed should be intimidating, which is why I lean toward simple styles and outfit formulas. But simple doesn’t have to be bland and generic either, so I’m always looking for ways to add some variety, interest, and personality without having to fiddle and fuss with my clothes.

I love my medium blue denim jeans, in no small part because I find them so easy to style. But sometimes we need to switch things up, and colored denim* is one way to add variety without veering too far from standard jeans. (*I count anything other than blue denim as “colored.” That includes other neutrals: white, ecru, grey, tan, brown, and black.)

Colored jeans outfit ideas

Whenever I bring a new piece home, the first thing I do is try it with other pieces already in my wardrobe. If it “plays well with others,” it gets to stay. These brown garment-dyed wide leg jeans passed that test handily. I was easily able to create several combinations, and these are my 3 favorites.

I’m wearing size 28 Petite in the jeans. I think they run true-to-size, but will stretch out just a little with wear. So if you want a slimmer fit, I’d suggest trying a size down.

Sporty casual

A classic Breton-stripe sweater or top (cream or white + navy) will work with just about any color on the bottom half.

Column of color

Your “column” pieces don’t have to match exactly to get the effect.

My sizes: cardigan – XXS, sweater – M, jeans 28 Petite

This colored jeans outfit is comfortable enough for running errands, but polished enough to meet a friend for lunch at the local bistro. The leopard belt and metallic shoes add nice visual “pops” to the look.

Get shirty

This one’s for those of you who live in warmer climates. (Or to keep in mind for warmer days ahead…)

I’m wearing size S in the shirt. This color is mostly sold out, other colors available.

More striped shirts

The jeans I’m wearing come in a few other colors. (The “Chalked Fig” color is a great one for you Summers.) We can expect to see more colored jeans styles as the spring collections start to roll in. Here are a few ideas to get you started…

  1. A snazzy intro look! I do have some colored jeans. I’ve noticed I have a problem with sweaters being cropped or shorter than my shirts. I really don’t like shirts tucked in unless it’s a minimal ‘French tuck’. Sometimes my camisoles are too long as well. I should find a good tailor close by. 😉

  2. I have not worn colored jeans in a long time and just found I wore my blue and black jeans more. I enjoy your blog. I find you thoughtful and honest. Thanks.

  3. I love colored jeans but haven’t had a pair in years. I looked at the jeans you show and my eye was drawn to the iris bloom color. But what is that color??! In the first few pix, it looks to be a warmish plum but the last pix? Looks like a nice soft berry. More pinkish than brownish?
How do you see that color? I have such a hard time figuring out color online!!! ☹️

    1. I was just at the Madewell store, and hoping they might have that one in-store to be able to see the color IRL. Unfortunately they didn’t. It’s been my experience that the “flat lay” (not on model) images are often closest to the actual color.

      1. Thx. That helps. I often find a big difference between color on model and flat lay. Never know which one is closest to real color.
Maybe you’d consider a post about online color…. websites and filters? suggestions for determining warm vs cool.
        Just an idea!

  4. After a lifetime of only wearing navy or black pants (because slimming ) I bought jeans in “fig” color. Instantly I realized how many of my favorite tops in grape, mauve, aubergine and burgundy harmonized with them!

  5. thank you! I was having trouble putting together a “column of color” because my pieces don’t match exactly… this outfit was so helpful and CUTE!

  6. I love all three outfits and favour the shirt one. Apart from (off-)white, black and blue, I have never had another colour jeans. Hmmm…

  7. I did the same as Janet (below) and bought a pair of burgundy cords = and discovered I had lots of tops to go with them. I can’t believe I’m writing this, but I’m thinking of buying a pair of bright ‘baby-ish’ blue pants for spring / summer. They’re shown with a top in a similar color, but I’m thinking black, navy, white, and even a gray might go with them. Even a Breton as you mention would jazz them up. (Does anyone say ‘jazzy’ anymore? It was one of my mom’s favorite words.)

  8. t colored jeans, but colored cords in jeans style this season. Mainly high waisted styles, very flattering for me.They’re warmer than jeans here in the tundra and I’ve found it easy to ad various tops – sweaters, flannel shirts, and blouses that include the color of the pants. It’s been a nice change from jeans on total rotation.

  9. Hi Susan! So I’ll be the total outlier here and tell you that yes, I do wear colored jeans year round (gray and ecru in the fall and winter) but in the Spring I love to trot out my crayon-box shades–royal blue, kelly green and lemon yellow. They aren’t in style, they aren’t modern or sophisticated but they make me smile all day so–voila! I do try to style them in a modern fashion and minimize everything else in the outfit to make the jeans the focus but it’s all about the color. I get compliments on my looks, probably because the jeans and colors are unexpected and in the Spring they seem appropriate. It’s a ton of fun, and isn’t that what fashion is supposed to be? Cheers!
