Fall Outfits for Warm Weather: Lightweight Layers That Work.

For those of us who live in milder climates, fall doesn’t always mean “sweater weather.” Mornings can start out cool, but by midday temperatures can feel almost like summer. Yes, even in November! We’ve had a warmer-than-normal fall, and I’ve heard the same from many of you. So how do we put together fall outfits for warm weather? For me, lightweight layers help strike that balance between feeling seasonal and staying comfortable.

Here are a few outfits built around easy layers that can come off as the day warms up. I’ll share what makes each one work, including how to accessorize for fall without adding warmth.

A Navy Sweatshirt Jacket with Stripes & Leopard Flats

I LOVE these Mini-Belfast sweatshirt jackets from Frank & Eileen! They’re easy to wear, washable, and a 9-month piece in our climate. I’ve purchased a couple of them from prior seasons; this one in Classic Navy (gifted) is a new favorite. When the day warms up, it’s easy to tie over the shoulders.

I’ve styled it here with a tee in a Pistachio green stripe, my favorite Ruti barrel jeans, and these incredibly comfortable leopard flats. The suede texture and acorn charm add a seasonal touch without adding warmth.

A Paris-Inspired Look with a Lightweight Cotton Jacket

Here’s a Paris-inspired look with a longer cotton jacket from Rue Sophie (gifted) and striped poplin shirt. The shirt creates structure without sacrificing ease, and keeps the outfit looking put-together when it’s too warm for the jacket. I saw versions of these lace-up jazz shoes in several Parisian shop windows, and love the bit of Serge Gainsbourg-esque insouciance they add. Mine are from a prior season; you can find more options here, here, and here.

Fall Texture with a Sweater Tee & Tan Jacket

I shopped my closet for this outfit, and was pleased with how it came together. I’m finding sweater tees to be real workhorses this season: warm enough underneath a jacket on cool mornings, but comfortable on their own as the day warms up. Here, the cable-knit texture, suede bag, and calf-hair sneakers give the outfit a fall feel. A silk scarf helps keep the morning chill off my neck, and can be tied to the handle of my bag when the temperature rises.

Style Tips for Warm Weather Fall Outfits

🍂 Lean into lightweight layers. A light jacket, cardigan, or open shirt can add a finished look without too much warmth. Choose layers that are easy to remove as temperatures rise, and make sure you like the outfit underneath just as much.

🍂 Choose breathable fabrics. Cotton, lightweight silk, and Tencel can all work well for warmer fall days. If mornings and evenings are cooler, fine-gauge Merino wool or lightweight cashmere may provide just enough warmth without the bulk of a chunky sweater. Pay attention to fabric weight and jacket linings, too, which can make a big difference in comfort.

🍂 Use texture to bring in a fall feel. Suede, leather, corduroy, cable knits, calf hair, and bouclé can all give an outfit a seasonal touch. You don’t need much: a suede bag, textured belt, or calf-hair flats can do the work when it’s too warm for heavier clothing.

🍂 Add a seasonal print. Animal prints, plaids and checks, paisley, and dark florals are easy ways to bring fall into the mix. A lightweight printed scarf adds interest near your face and can be tucked into your bag when the day heats up.

🍂 Let color help set the mood. Chocolate brown, burgundy, olive, and navy can give even lightweight pieces a fall feel. But you don’t have to stick to traditional autumn shades. Try pairing your favorite brighter colors with deeper neutrals, as I’ve done with the pistachio striped tee and navy jacket.

Is it sweater weather where you are, or are you still dressing for warm afternoons? What pieces help you bring a little fall into your outfits while staying comfortable?
