Festive Casual Holiday Outfit With Jeans
When the invitation says “festive casual attire,” you can bet I’ll start with denim. 😉 Here’s a casual holiday outfit idea with jeans…
Adding something metallic is my favorite shortcut to make any outfit more festive. Shopped my closet for this one! I’ve had the metallic cardigan for a year or so and love how it dresses up just about any outfit. The silk shell is a couple of years old, similar here. I’ve had these jeans for a few weeks now, and reach for them often, as they’re extremely soft and comfortable!
More metallic cardigans…
What’s your favorite shortcut to make outfits feel more festive?

I always always always look forward to your morning notes to all of us. And I’ve been meaning to tell you for sometime now; I just love your new haircut! It looks amazing. Thank you for keeping us well-versed in style!
Hi Susan: did you get size 28 in the CoH jeans? Soft sounds good! Thanks, Sally
Hi Sally, yes.
Will definitely try to recreate this look from my closet tho currently do not own metallics …..Since I am a (probably) soft autumn, always appreciate your color posts and explanations. Every post has something I can learn from…thank you!! In “more metallic options” the lavender French connection cardigan is so pretty and wondering if you could do a post on wearing purples/lavender and how to determine what is warm or cool. For me, it’s the hardest color to figure out.
Hi Kay, thank you! Determining your own color palette can be tricky, but the short answer is look for colors that make you look rested rather than tired. Use a mirror in natural daylight.
Velvet! I have some velvet smoking slippers (Birdies), a velvet shirt and a couple of velvet jackets, any of which fancies up a pair of jeans and a crisp white shirt (my standard). Not all at the same time!
I also love metallics on my feet, but in the winter (Seattle area) I do love my velvet- not too wearable or appropriate the rest of the year, even if rain isn’t the best on footwear…
To make a casual outfit more festive; texture as in velveteen for jean styles rather than a denim or a related festive color in a sweater (or top) rather than a neutral are two, however find just adding a ‘festive’ brooch in a costume jewelry piece (artisan crafted or industrial made) is ‘my shortcut favorite’ as can be worn on outerwear as well. -Brenda-
Love it and the shoes absolutely make the outfit, that spiced camel color is such a knockout in the velvet! xx
Thanks, Rona!
Susan, another great post, thank you so much for these great tips. I have followed you for quite a few years and you never disappoint. I am hoping you can help me determine the right length for my jeans while wearing flats such as your Sam Edelmans. I feel I have a pair too long a pair to short and need the pair that is just right. I have turned up the hem of my jeans for a more casual look, but need something different for this look. I would really appreciate knowing the length in inches between the bottom of your jeans and the middle of your ankle bone and any other tips about lengths, hems, cuffs and anything else you can add. Thanks again! Arlene
Hi Arlene, I find that preferred pants length is a personal choice, and depends a lot on your proportions and style personality. Most of the time, I prefer my jeans or trousers to hit at the top of my ankle. This works best with my proportions, and with almost all of my shoes.
