Foulard de la semaine

Some cooler, breezy weather this week had me digging out my warmer foulards, but ‘ll admit, I really haven’t been feeling the large silk carrés lately. (I’m sure this too shall pass.)

This scarf was purchased on our first Paris trip in 2007 at one of the touristy stores on the Rue Rivoli.  The colors coordinate with almost everything else in my closet.

If you’ve been sitting on the fence contemplating giving scarves a try, now is a great time.  Great lightweight scarves are available everywhere, and at price points that won’t make you regret a little experimentation.  Go for a long scarf rather than a square, in lightweight materials with texture that will “grab” when you tie it (avoid slippery fabrics, which won’t stay put).  When you see French women wearing scarves, the look is restrained and “just threw it on,” so keep it simple.  Have fun!

  1. great colours, especially on you! I picked up three new ones that I just couldn’t choose between. Bad, I know, but with scarves I always know they’re not going to go out of style.

  2. Lovely scarf – I love most the things I have that go with many options.

Do you ever wear or try large scarves or shawls? I have one from Novica, a gorgeous Indian lightweight wool, but I’m just not sure what to do with it. And being a fashion introvert isn’t helping – maybe I just need to throw it on and feel confident.

  3. Those colours remind me of some of materfamilias knitting projects…I really like the lime vibe here. The fringe looks interesting with the swirl of colour…I am with you on the casualness of scarf adornment…it should not look like you worked at it, fun and ease are the thought behind them.

  4. I love these stripes on you. They’re just perfect.

I just got a black-and-white silk/cashmere paisley scarf, and I have only worn it once; this wacky weather means I can get it out and enjoy it, as you suggest!

  5. Great colors on you and I’m always biased in favor of stripes!

I’ve gotten more into inexpensive scarves since crossing over into 40-land (though they are now a very all-ages look!).

I may be up to all of 8 scarves, snort — have you mentioned before how many (more or less) are in your collection? Seems like you always have just the right one to throw on for the weather and your outfit.

Because of my body shape I do a lot of rectangular ones. Shockingly, I’ve noticed that the results of my “just throw it on!” seem vastly different from what you and so many French women achieve, ha. I will keep studying your pics/trying….

  6. I have a beautiful striped scarf with some body that I bought in Ecuador – I would love to wear it as you are wearing yours, but I can’t figure out what you did. Could you tell us? I tried to copy your picture, but it didn’t seem to work.

This is part of a new year’s commitment to wearing jewelry or a scarf or maybe even both every day – I inherited some lovely jewelry and about a zillion scarves, and this will help me decide what to keep and what to let go of (or so I tell myself).

  7. Oh that is just beautiful! I think your scarf collection is even bigger than mine and twice as fascinating. This one reminds me of those little rocks they used to sell in English “chemist” shops to provide children with glucose (read: contribute towards hyperactivity and tooth decay). I used to love those rocks, so this takes me back to my childhood and happy times with my mum. R x

  8. J’aime vos foulards! Thanks to inspiration from you, now I am making an effort to wear something from my scarf collection every day. They make my outfits look so much more pulled together! Viva les carrés!

  9. It is great if you happen to have a scarf that fits with all your clothes. I only have about half a dozen different scarves, including the winter ones. I bet you have more ; )

  10. We’re supposed to be mid-autumn here, but at 29 degrees C today, I can’t yet pull out my scarves. But I suppose I probably need to get a few more for when it does finally cool down!

  11. Duchesse – thank you! You’re an experienced scarf wearer, so go right ahead with those slippy silks!

materfamilias – the one I’ve seen so far (entertaining Nola) is gorgeous! And it’s true, they don’t go out of style.

Artful Lawyer – I do wear larger shawls on occasion, usually for evenings. I also keep one or two at work for when the a/c goes into overdrive. I’ll try to work in some shawl posts soon.

  12. hostess of the humble bungalow – thank you!

Belle – thanks, and it looks as though we have another scarf-wearing week ahead…see you tomorrow! 😉

enc – thanks so much! Looks like you’ll be able to wear that fabulous scarf again this week.

  13. Vix – thank you! Keep practicing; you’ll find those ties that give the effect you want.

    LBR – mmmmm….macarons!

    WendyB – you’re the best!

Marsha – Thanks! I did pick up a tripod over the weekend, and will try to get some step-by-step pics up later this week.

  14. metscan – I’ll bet your scarves are all as lovely as the Etro one you posted. I’m looking forward to seeing more of them.

Rosina – thanks so much! I’m happy this brings back happy memories of childhood treats.

Melissa L. – yes, scarves really can work some wardrobe magic!

  15. Those colors look great on you. You are right–for scarf beginners, even junky ones look great. So it’s worth experiementing.
