  1. Actually it’s Julie Delpy channeling Nina Simone that makes this scene so endearing. Ethan Hawke does nothing for me.

Wendyb – Mommie Dearest, LOL! I’ve been trying to find my favorite “bad mommy” scene, the staircase scene from Postcards from the Edge, but no one seems to have uploaded it anywhere.

Marsi – I always associate Nina with Paris!

  2. Ethan Hawke bugs me so much in these films that I have to look away every time he is on screen. But, as it has Paris and the fantastic Deply I try to watch it and focus on what I love and ignore what I don’t.

  3. I wouldn’t call myself an Ethan Hawke fan, yet I love this movie dearly and I think he’s an important part of what makes it so brilliant. I actually think EH is a remarkably generous actor, not afraid to downplay his role and let his costars shine.

I’m remembering an interview EH gave when Denzel Washington was up for the best actor Oscar for Training Day. Saying that while they were rehearsing he realized that Denzel was channeling something amazing and that the best thing he (EH) could do was to get out of his way and allow that to happen, as well provide the necessary foil to complement it.

I see the same thing in this movie and I think it’s what frees us up to love Julie Delpy so much. I think another actor in this role (who shall we say…Johnny Depp? Richard Gere? Brad Pitt? George Clooney? Denzel?) would have caused this to be an entirely different movie, and probably a lot less satisfying.

Disclaimer: This from someone who doesn’t hate Keanu Reeves, either.
