Monday mashup: tees, sneakers & more

J.Crew vintage cotton graphic tee la Riviera Citrons

It’s been a busy few days. Jeune homme came to stay with us for the weekend and we had a Zoom Passover Seder with le Monsieur’s family. Chag sameach if you’re celebrating!

Getting graphic…

I know that graphic tees “divide the masses.” We’ve often been told that women over 40 shouldn’t wear them. I disagree, of course. 😉 I believe you should wear what you like regardless of age. (And of course, skip anything you don’t like, regardless of whose “must have” list it’s on.)

Rather than “am I too old (or young) to wear this,” I think we should ask ourselves whether we feel authentic and confident wearing it.

A graphic tee can add a touch of insouciance to an outfit. I’m picky about my graphics though. I like those that either have personal meaning (that favorite band tee from the unforgettable concert) or have a whimsical bent. Above, a print that evokes the South of France vacation we’re all longing to take. (Sizes XX-Small to 3X).

Madewell "poisson bleu" graphic tee.

I first saw this one a few days ago and ordered it on the spot. Just received it over the weekend and it’s a keeper! The fabric is substantial enough to be opaque, but isn’t stiff. It is a shorter style though (good for petites) and IMO runs true-to-size (XX-Small to XX-Large).

Superstar sneakers

Susan B. wears Sole Bliss star sneakers in white and gold.

Sole Bliss has re-stocked several of their sneaker and other shoe styles. They kindly sent me this pair of star detail sneakers, and they are winners! (If you don’t know about Sole Bliss, they specialize in shoes for those with wide feet and bunions. My feet are a medium width and I find these sneakers comfortable too.)

Sole Bliss has offered my readers a 15% discount on all styles with code FEMME15. If sneakers aren’t your thing, they also offer loafers, flats, pumps and other styles, all designed with comfort in mind.

The eyes have it 👁

It’s the live Zoom I know many of you have been waiting for…Brian of Brian + MW will be sharing tips and tricks for enhancing and defining our eyes! We’ll be going live this Saturday 4/3 at 3pm ET / 12pm PT. Brian tells me he’ll also have some special offers for those on the Zoom.

If you’d like to join us, just click HERE to pre-register. I’m really looking forward to this one!

  1. Just purchased both tees – love them. Having our small Seder tomorrow – as it was my daughter’s birthday over the weekend. Glad you saw your son and were able to celebrate with him.

  2. I like graphic tees for a casual look with jeans. But I have a rule about graphic tees— only buy it if it’s somewhere you have been or a band you have seen. Yes, I am old, so I have a few!

  3. I like those with a French accent. My favorite is a chic girl in a beret walking her poodle. You are a shoefanista. I love the way you pick just the right shoe for an outfit. It was the details I could never get quite right until I started following you. Love your turn with a scarf.

  4. I had never heard that about graphic tees and I *hate* that women over XYZ age are ever told they are “too old” to wear something. Sexism & ageism all wrapped up into one mean package.

  5. Love this post! I’ve just gotten my e-mail from Chico’s that feature YOU in the advertisement. You look great in it!

  6. I wore a “Paris” graphic tee to my vaccine appointment. I tired very hard to think of my travels. It didn’t make me feel better, though. 🙁 Oh, well. Let’s follow our hearts when it comes to style. We’re wise enough and sure enough to decide for ourselves what to wear. If something brings us joy, wear it!

  7. Thank you for the reminder on Sole Bliss: I had looked them up once before after seeing the Helen Mirren photos in these shoes, but promptly forgot the Co. name and mistook another British bunion/wide foot brand for it!

I have miserable feet, so most of the shoes you have found very comfortable, would not work for me (need custom orthotics for high arch, bunions, high instep, small ankle, need lots of padding underfoot). I can fuss a lot with 3/4 orthotics and arch inserts to wear Paul Green and Aquatalia, but they still aren’t all-day walking comfort. This line has some very attractive and on-trend looks w/ padding, so I am hopeful!

  8. Susan, for some reason I have not been receiving your posts. Have you had anyone else contact you stating the same situation? I participated in your survey regarding your focus upcoming. I have subscribed to your blog again so I hope I again be receiving your posts again.

    1. Hi Launie, thanks for letting me know. Sometimes email platforms will change their spam filtering parameters, and emails you do want will start getting flagged as “junk”. One way to be sure this doesn’t happen again is to add “[email protected]” to your list of Safe or Preferred senders.

  9. Chag Sameach. I’m so glad you’ve finally been able to spend time with your son in person. We did a Zoom as well – hopefully this will be our very last seder for two.

I have heard that rule about graphic Ts, but certainly don’t think it applies across the board. Obviously some are way more sophisicated than others. Thank you for the recommendation to Sole Bliss. I have a wide foot, a high instep, and occasional plantar fasciitis that flares up, all of which can make shoe buying challenging. Styles you’ve recommended from Paul Green, Aquatalia, and Vince, seem to work for me, but I’m always looking for something comfortable.

  10. I like graphic tees on other people, on me not so much. It’s not an age thing it’s a me thing. I generally don’t wear anything with a picture, emblem or logo on it. There is a Levi sweat shirt I wear not for the logo but for the weight of it and I only wear it around the house or walking the dogs. Thanks for the shoe recommendation.

  11. Is the fish tee-shirt on a white background? It is hard to tell on the website. It almost looks off-white or cream. Thanks Heidi
