Hommes et foulards
The lightweight scarf, until lately an autumnal hallmark of European aristos and Upper East Side decorators, has been embraced by style-savvy downtownsters. Perfected by Etro, among others, such scarves are available from Gucci to Club Monaco, in linen, cotton, silk and so on. Like the fedora, the necktie and the suit vest, all of which have made astonishing comebacks in recent seasons, scarves are yet another token of grandfatherly elegance. They have been resurrected not as throat warmers but as something that can be added to a dressed-down look like a V-neck T-shirt and jeans to give it a dressed-up flash. You might even call the scarf the necktie of the T-shirt
I’ve been noticing this trend a bit here in LA since this summer. Twenty-something hipster guys have been adopting some of the same scarf looks as the women: lightweight, often ethnic print, wrapped casually around the neck, with the majority of fabric in the front. I like this look on les hommes jeunes. What about you?

I’ve always loved that European casual scarf look.
I love this look for men…it’s very Euro.
Miss J LOVES this look. Alas, Mr. J would probably NEVER go for it.
So far the very few men here who have adopted light scarves are young bucks, the older guys stick with a winter muffler. Love the look but the rest of the outfit has to work with it.
What they fail to mention is that the European aristos and Upper East Side decorators are all living downtown these days.
I like the look on others at times…but I prefer my husband to look more unstudied. It is a very affected look.
I really like the look, altho’ it can look too affected. I got Paul to pick up a rusty orange (yes, really!) linen scarf in Paris summer before last and he will very occasionally wear it, with jeans and a simple black sweater or with his leather jacket. Very occasionally, and the weather has to justify it somewhat — if its purpose is obviously just decorative, he won’t be wearing it.
I love this look. He-weasel won’t don a scarf in the states( unless it is to save his neck in freezing weather). But, I think he would don it in Paris. He is much more daring there.
No go.
I do love this look, but my husband would say its a little too ‘metro’ for his taste. I may talk him into it yet…
If it feels good, do it. This feels good.
