Just A Small Dinner Party…

…with a few of my closest friends, oh wait– no, this month we’re talking about our fantasy dinner party, where the guests can be any 10 people, living or not-so-much-anymore. Moi-même, I’m choosing a mix of historical, literary and other notables, some of whom may have a checkered past, but all of whom would be fascinating dinner companions.
To start, here is the setting. I’m going to create this al fresco dinner party on a warm summer evening, where I’m hoping a relaxed setting will put all of the guests at ease, help the conversation flow freely.  We’ll keep the menu relaxed too: several courses including fresh salads, tapas, savory small bites and sorbets, ice creams, fresh fruits and some of le monsieur’s chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

And who will attend?

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. I’d love to ask them about their vision of the Constitution, and whether they could have foreseen how it would evolve and be interpreted today. Plus, they had such a rivalry between the two of them, we might get a fun catfight later on after too much wine had been consumed!

Queen Elizabeth I. What would she think of today’s monarchy? I’d love to hear about some of the court intrigue, and maybe she’d spill the beans about whether she and Robert Dudley ever hooked up.

Shakespeare. Whoever he was. And now we’ll know.

Coco Chanel.  Maybe she’d talk about fashion today, and tell us what she really thinks about Karl!

Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis. Just to class up the place a bit. Plus, she could speak French with Coco.

Dolly Parton. She’s long been on my list of fantasy dinner guests. I love her sass and brass, and think she’d be a hoot and keep the party lively.

F. Scott Fitzgerald and Edith Wharton. I’d love to hear more about the worlds they inhabited and wrote about, and be intrigued to hear their impressions of today’s celebrity culture (of lack thereof).

Colin Firth. Ok, so I needed another homme to balance things out, and succumbed to the eye candy.

Actually, I had a tough time narrowing this down to 10 once I got going!  But you can see everyone’s Top 10 Dinner Party Guest choices over at Splenderosa.

  1. Absolute perfection. I would love to be seated between Jefferson and Adams and agree completely with you. I would like to hear what they would have to say about the Constitution.

I would like to be as close as possible to Dolly Parton — just love her — depending upon how you arrange your table. This is my fantasy, being invited to your party.

    xo,

  2. OMG, what conversation among this group. I, too, would love to see what CoCo thinks of Karl, etc. You did brilliantly, my friend. Jacqueline Kennedy was on my list but at the last moment I just had to include Georgia O’Keefe. I think Mrs. Kennedy would be appalled at our informality now, don’t you? xx’s

  3. Love it that you threw in Colin Firth!! What a lively party…I would love to be an ant in the grass to just listen to the conversation from your party!!

  4. What a fun dinner party. I dare say that Parton would dominate the scene! And what would CoCo make of her? Would they be fast friends or dominate opposite sides of the lawn.
