A Light, Bright Summer Outfit - une femme d'un certain âge

A Light, Bright Summer Outfit

Susan B. wears a bright summer outfit with red linen pants, a printed top, and yellow platform sandals. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

One of the most frustrating things about being a style blogger is finding something I love that sells out before I have a chance to show it to you. Such was the case with the top and pants here.

Earrings (c/o) | Top (similar) | Bracelet (c/o) | Bracelet (similar) | Pants (similar) | Sandals

I purchased both late last year during seasonal clearance sales. But I decided to share them anyway, because I really love this outfit. I’ve rounded up some alternate pieces for a similar look. (The sandals, at least, are still available and still on sale for another couple of days.)

Summer Brights

Susan B. of une femme d'un certain age wears a mermaid print shirt, red linen pants and yellow platform sandals.

During the warmer months, a lightweight print blouse is a great way to add visual interest to an outfit. This one is from last summer’s collection from Chinti & Parker.

The pants are a “carrot” cut, which means wider and curved in the legs, and tapered at the ankles. These are linen, from brand Whistles. I think they’re a little long, and will probably have them hemmed about an inch.

The earrings (gifted) are from Dean Davidson jewelry. I love the brushed gold, and clean modern design. Dean Davidson is kindly offering my readers 25% off with code SUSAN25.

Dean Davidson jewelry reminds me a lot of Rivka Friedman. She has very nice jewelry also. Your doggie is so cute!

I love the idea of “red” summer pants as they’d work well with lots of neutral shoes as well as tops. And, each of us has a version of “red” that works with our coloring. Until now I’d never thought of getting a pair of red pants. Thanks for the suggestion. (In S.C. “summer” will continue until the end of September so plenty of time to wear them.)

Susan, I have been fallowing your blog for several years now and I always loved your style. Classic, elegant and sophisticated (because of your posts I fell in love with Eileen Fisher). In today’s post you’re glowing! I love the new colors you choose, they make you “shine” or glow, it seems they bring out all of your beautiful features. I have been paying more attention to my own coloring more now, because of your blog. Thank you for the inspiration ❤️

You need not worry about items selling out before your blog is ready for your readers. I speak for myself when I say I’m not buying much these days. But I certainly get ideas on putting together “old” items to achieve a “new” look. We all have to choose clothes that are the most flattering to our body types/sizes as well as our coloring. I appreciate your insight and enjoy your blog. Aren’t we lucky to have so many bloggers who are of “A Certain Age” to inspire us to feel and look absolutely fantastic?!?

Being an optimist, I’ve been buying some new things, even though I might not wear them until next year. I am buying because the stores have a lot of merchandise to sell and they are giving big discounts. I’ve scored some Vince tee shirts and Eileen Fisher items for 70% off. Never would I buy them at full price! I have found that Saksoff5th is doing the best in offering discounts. Check it out

I have always loved & worn red & think of it as a neutral because it goes so well with just about every other colour. I wear it most with white, black& wheat, but it also goes with brights like turquoise, lime, orange & peacock. At present I have 2 pairs of red jeans & get almost as much wear out of them as I do my regular blue jeans. Four other things I’m never without: red shoes (3 pairs at the moment: loafers, sandals & canvas espadrilles), a red turtleneck sweater, a red cami & a red leather motorcycle jacket. If I have these in my closet I can always pull together a look that makes me feel well-dressed.

Well, I followed the link to the interview and that has sent me down the rabbit hole of your archives. You mentioned starting your blog when you turned 50, which I just did a few months ago, and I was curious to see what 50 year old Susan was like. I’ve been reading you for several years now and enjoy your posts, but 50 year old you makes me laugh out loud and really speaks to me. Must be where I am in life now vs. where you were then. I am so thrilled to have all of these posts to catch up on! It’s like discovering they just released a new season of a tv show you enjoy.

Oh you have the same earrings as Megan. Fancy.
Your outfit is a perfect example of casual chic. Lovely items. And you have such a cute ‘prop’ haha.
