what I would have worn

black & leopard

lipstickcardigan | tank | jeans (similar) | necklace | clutch (similar) | sandals

Saturday night we’d planned to go out to dinner, and even had managed to get reservations at a new place we’d been wanting to try. But the caregiver we’d arranged to watch jeune homme called off sick at the last minute, so instead le Monsieur dashed out for some takeout BBQ, and we enjoyed some tri-tip, beans and coleslaw while watching a movie on Netflix. ( “Ida” which had come highly recommended by a co-worker. Yes, it’s very good.)

But had we gone out, this is what I’d planned to wear. You didn’t think I’d given up my black, did you? 😉 I like how the long cardigan and camel pieces soften it a bit.

Do you often have to switch gears when plans go south?

  1. Oh my, yes. My health can turn ugly in a heartbeat, and what looked like a lovely evening out becomes an equally lovely evening IN. We just roll with it, right? As long as we’re with people we love, we are the most fortunate of women…
    big hug,
    Janice

  2. Seems like we switch gears constantly…it is good to be flexible with a smile! Love this look and the long cardigan!

  3. Love the sweater and the outfit. Sorry your plans went “south” and glad the night was rescued.

  4. I think being able to change plans at the last minute keeps us young.

I love everything about this outfit. It creates such long lean lines. You look 6′ tall in it.

    bisous
    Suzanne

    1. Suzanne, I agree! I think flexibility keeps us nimble and better able to cope with what life throws at us. Thank you!

  5. I’m sorry your plans didn’t work out but in the photos you look fabulous as always. I’m so so SO glad you haven’t given up on black! I’m finding myself wearing lots of color here in Honolulu but my preference is black, gray and navy <3

    1. Sally, I will NEVER give up on black. 😉 Hope you’re having a wonderful time in Honolulu!

  6. I really like your off white/camel with black. I will never not be in black, and your choices here “summer it up.” Your look lovely! Thoughts of BBQ making my mouth water now…

  7. Yes! And, I love your camel and black. Very cool… How wonderful you have a hubby who “kicks-it-into gear” and brings BBQ take out– in! A good movie, and a tummy full of BBQ sounds like a sweet way to spend a weekend night.

  8. Love the long cardi (and your black one also). Did you get your regular EF size or go up or down?
If my late in-laws still had their beautiful Pasadena house, I’d come sit for you. Really miss our southern CA visits (and my wonderful in-laws, of course).

    1. frugal, thanks, and yes my regular size. I really, really like this linen version. Oh wouldn’t it be fun to meet up if you were still visiting SoCal?

  9. That’s a beautiful look. I too love black but I’ve found in the past few years, softening it with cream or beige near the face makes it much more flattering to my aging skin. Glad you salvaged your evening!

    1. Karin, thank you! I think there are lots of ways to soften up black pieces….hmmmm, maybe need to do a blog post on this.

  10. A great way to soften the black. Classic but modern. Lovely.
I have started being concious of wearing white or ivory on top to brighten up. Recently I was on a job interview and opted for a black pant with a soft white blouse and soft white jacket. It really made me stand out (in a good way!) in a sea of black suits!
We all have those nights! Sounds like you made the best of it and had a nice evening at home.

    1. lisette, thank you very much! Sometimes a bit of contrast is just the kind of impact needed.

      1. Thanks for the reply–sadly, there’s a slightly used one on a resale site, but it’s an L–I take S (or sometimes M) in EF so I guess it won’t work.
My in-laws lived in NOCAL (Cotati) in old age and that was a great place to visit too.

  11. Hi Femme – I bought my first 100% Eileen Fisher tank thanks to you is gorgeous and I love it but I don’t remember silk been stretchy like this. Is it new type of silk.

  12. This is a beautiful outfit. It looks elegant and so comfortable. Does the sweater leave lint on the black underneath? Nothing a lint roller can’t cure. Nice save on the evening too!

  13. great outfit. i love wearing black and neutrals soften it up a bit, but it’s not always easy to pull off! loved the movie Ida.

    1. Sara, thank you. I thought the cinematography in Ida was brilliant…really captured a mood of a time and place.

  14. Love the long cardigan! Isn’t it funny, life’s little detours? My husband and I have accidentally discovered some grand little spots off the beaten track. Glad your “re-routed” evening turned out well.

  15. Ida? Did you call me? 😉 That’s my first name by the way and yes, I’ve heard about the movie. It won the Oscar for best foreign film. Sorry to hear that your dinner plan got cancelled but sometimes staying in with some take-out and a good movie is not too shabby too! Dressing up for TV dinner can be fun too 🙂
