Look du Jour: A Linen Eyelet Shirt & Jeans

I’ve always loved the idea of eyelet (or broderie anglaise) tops for warm weather. The eyelet details allow for more airflow, and add texture and visual interest. But so many eyelet pieces just tend to skew too twee for me. 🍭 So when I saw this one, it was an immediate Add to Cart.

A relaxed linen eyelet shirt outfit

Susan B. wears a brown linen eyelet shirt outfit, with ivory tank, barrel leg jeans and pointed toe flats, carries a crochet straw tote.

People: run, don’t walk. This linen eyelet shirt is SO good! The eyelet pattern is intricate, and seems to be very finely and well stitched. The fabric is a medium-weight linen, light enough to be breathable, but crisp enough to have some structure. (I suspect if you wash it, you may want to add a light spray starch when you iron to keep that crispness.)

This “deep chocolate” color is right up my alley, but it’s also available in white and lemon yellow. Sizes 00-24. (The full-outfit images show the color most accurately.) I think a darker or more vibrant color can help an eyelet piece look less juvenile. And a geometric eyelet design will also look more sophisticated.

Here you can see the eyelet details on the sleeve and cuff. I also love this freshwater pearl statement ring, which isn’t too fussy to wear with relaxed and casual outfits. And at just under $50, I think it’s reasonably priced.

The bag is also quite budget-friendly, and a fun summer accent.

I love wearing this shirt as a lightweight topper, but it also looks great worn on its own. And I’d definitely pack this one for summer travel!

  1. Susan, I love those jeans! Would you mind sharing your thoughts on the fit and inseam? I find even at 5’2” petite sizing is too long for me. I’d like them to fit above my ankle in the barrel shape. Saw some on Everlane but they’re back ordered.
    Thanks! Lisa

    1. Hi Lisa, thanks! I’m 5’1″ and the inseam is 24″. I wear size 1 in most Ruti jeans and pants. Hope that helps!

  2. This outfit is gorgeous. I especially love the chocolate brown color of the eyelet shirt! Unexpected but it works perfectly. I often struggle with what to wear in my office on jeans Fridays that will look polished but not stiff and will keep me comfortable in frigid air conditioning. A long sleeved linen shirt as a topper would work perfectly. Thanks for the inspiration.

  3. The brown is beautiful on you. It seems to have a touch of purple…a gorgeous shade. And the ring with pearl adds a hint (soupçon?) of elegance.

  4. Susan, you look lovely in the brown and such a beautifully designed shirt. Eyelet is so classy.

Do your glasses have the transition lenses? I am thinking of purchasing those and wondering how well and fast they transition.

Thanks for your dedicated work to bring us relevant info.

    1. Hi Sharon, thanks so much! I do have a couple of eyeglasses with transition lenses, but the ones I’m wearing here are straight-up sunglasses. I love transition lenses for travel and those days when I don’t want to have to switch back and forth between optical and sunglasses. They have really improved in recent years, and do respond well to changes in light.

  5. Love that shirt on you! I ordered it in yellow a while back and immediately returned it — I loved the broderie anglaise, but the fabric was stiff and heavy, with none of the fluidity I like in linen. (I agree with the reviewer who said it felt like wearing a tablecloth.) I wonder whether the brown colorway has a different texture, or whether washing will soften it.

    1. Thanks, Nancy! I don’t find the brown that stiff or heavy, though it does have that “handkerchief linen” feel. And the broderie adds some structure. I found it softened up with steaming and wear, and I’m assuming will even more with washing.

  6. This must be an annual offering from J Crew. They had a similar (not exact) purple linen eyelet blouse/topper last year. I have no regrets having purchased it. Much of the eyelet is on the sleeves and upper portion of the shirt, so it came with a color matched camisole. I don’t buy much JC because the quality can vary, but this shirt and, from the looks of it, yours, is very high quality.

  7. Love this whole outfit also your hair and sunglasses. Want shirt but kind of pricy. Will search eBay and Poshmark. Thanks, you rock!

  8. I love the eyelet shirt on you! How does the sizing run? I have cool medium coloring with some brown tones in my color palette. Do you think that brown works for cool coloring? Thank you!
    Jayne

    1. Hi Jayne, thanks! I think the shirt runs true-to-size to slightly small. (Size up if you prefer a more oversized look.) I think this color is one of those “in-betweens” that can work for Springs, Summers, and Autumns. It will be too warm/soft for most Winters.
