Look Sharp

As is the Way Of All Things Fashion, the wheel has turned, the tide has shifted, and our elegant heroine is once again quietly gaining ground from the snub-nosed, the platformed, the vertiginous options that have dominated the footwear landscape these past years. In short, if you love pointed toe shoes as much as I do, the footwear gods are smiling on you this year and whether you prefer heels, flats, boots, or something in between you’ll have plenty to choose from now and in coming months.

Valentino Rockstud Flat…on my Lust List

My deep and abiding love of pointed toe shoes is no secret. There’s something about that shape that evokes instant glamour. A pointed toe shoe can be sweet or tough, classic or edgy.

They needn’t pinch either. Try a larger size to give yourself a bit more room, or look for brands that offer wide widths (Stuart Weitzman offers many styles in both Narrow and Wide widths).

What’s your view on pointed toe shoes?  Are you a fan?

  1. A big plus of a pair of low-heeled pointed-toe flats is that they will hold out through multiple style cycles. Oh the heel might not be the shape-of-the-day, if it’s low it’s not the focal point of the shoe anyway; the shape will see you through. My must-have is a pair in black patent leather. They spruce up Winter holiday outfits, usher in Easter and give late Summer dark cottons some class.

  2. Yes, I am a fan and have the Stuart Weitzman pointed toe pump in a low heel. It does elevate my ensemble when I wear them. I don’t have any pointed toe flats. For some reasons they never seem as flattering on me as they do on others.

  3. While I like the look, my feet do not like the fit, so I opt for a rounder toe. I have tried several different times over the years, and the result is back pain when I walk and pinched toes, neither of which is flattering!

    1. Yes, me too! I have reasonably wide feet and the width is all across the front bit so pointy toes are not my friend. I have a few, but they’re not very comfy.

    1. lynnteague, I don’t think my feet are particularly pointy, though I agree that everyone’s feet and comfort levels are different. Comfort is non-negotiable for me; I refuse to wear shoes or any other item of clothing that pinches, squeezes or hurts. (Which is why I’ve given up heels higher than 2.5 inches.)

  4. I share your love for pointy toes!
I love how they look, and they work well on my narrow feet.
RIght now I’m searching for a great pointed toe flat. Those Valentinos are calling my name, but I’ll probably settle for the J Crew ones.

    1. Marcy, the J.Crews are quite nice. I wear mine often. I went up a full size on these from what I normally wear in J.Crew loafers; they do run small.

      1. Thanks- that’s good to know. The ones I want are backordered, so I’m afraid if I order the wrong size I won’t be able to exchange them by the time they finally come.

  5. Yes, yes, yes to all the pairs above. I love the point. It elongates my rather short legs and helps me to achieve a more polished look.

  6. I’m not a huge fan of pointy toes, but it really depends on the rest of the shape. You’ve picked some great options here – I might have to be more open-minded!

  7. I have a couple of pairs of pointed toe shoes, but I don’t wear them much. I always feel as though I’m wearing “clown shoes” and have a difficult time negotiating stairs with a shoe that entends well beyond my toes. I did get a kitten heel pump from rsvp – available in a wide width that runs a bit wider then Stuart Weitzman. Of course at less than 1/3 the price, the quality is not the same. Rockport has some pointed toe flats I’d like to try.

  8. I do like the pointy toes, my big caveat is that they seem to scuff of so much more quickly in the front. And for overal foot happiness, I ususally prefer an almond spaped toe box (classic ballerinas). So, how is this for ambivalent?

  9. I love pointy shoes. I have small feet in relation to my height. So if I wear round toes I look out of proportion and as if I am about to fall over. Glad there will be lots of choice around.

  10. I like the look, but I don’t always like the fit, especially the extremely pointy ones. Overall, though a dressy flat or kitten heel is great. I LOATHE the current platforms, and can’t wait for them to go out of style.

Curious what others think of the studs that are appearing more and more. I like the edgy look, but I keep thinking how dreadfully they would snag on things. What’s your take?

  11. No pointed shoes for my long feet, but round ones please, because they make my feet look smaller. My toes do not like pointer shoes either.

  12. Only if the fit is exactly right– nothing is worse than puffy feet crammed into too-small shoes!

  13. Being vertically challenged (5’1″), I like pointed shoes as they help to elongate my short legs. I also find pointed shoes very comfortable for some reason. I wore a white pair to a recent wedding and they felt as comfortable at midnight as they were at 12 noon. Don’t ask me why!

  14. Sorry, but pointed shoes are not for me. Nor do I like kitten heels.
    I enjoyed your selection though : )

    1. I’m a daily follower of your blog. This piece on shoes prompted me to post as they are my weakness. I’ve had slim pickings the last few years refusing to wear clunkers and as the saying goes if you wore it the first time around (platforms) skip it the next time. My mother taught me to never wear shoes that didn’t make your ankles and legs look their best. So that rules out gladiators and ankle straps. I’m so happy to see feminine and flattering shoes again. For those who think you can’t wear pointy toes give them a try. I have days where I’m on my feet a lot so I buy “my standing” shoes in a larger size and have a shoe cobbler remove the insole and put in a layer of memory form. He uses the same stuff used in safety helmets. It’s like slipping your feet in to pillows.

BTW since I’m posting I love your new blond hair colour. Very soft and flattering!

  15. Count me in as a pointy-toe fan. I hadn’t bought any in a long time, since as you say they seemed to be “out”, but scored a pair of pointy fuschia suede/patent flats at deep discount from Talbots in the spring. Also found beautiful snake pattern pointy flats from Banana Republic. My feet are not exactly wide, but run a bit on the wide side….but I still have no problem wearing the pointy toe styles. I think they look so elegant!

And I CANNOT WAIT until those awful huge platform “hooker shoes” are out of style. Hideous!

  16. Feeling frustrated…I love your blog and have been reading for about a year via RSS. Yesterday I realized that I hadn’t ‘heard’ from you in a while, turns out none of the postings from the updated site had been fed to my Mac Mail so I deleted my old RSS feed and began a new one. That pulled in the postings from mid June to July 2. Again, today’s post wasn’t pulled in – don’t know the technical name for some of these things. Do you have any suggestions?

    1. Laura, I’m not certain what rss platform you’re using. If you’re using Feedblitz, I’ve noticed that the new posts don’t generate an email until almost 24 hours later. Another option is to add another comment, and check the “Notify me of new posts” option just below the comment field. You should receive notice at the email address you’ve entered on the comment when a new post goes up. Hope this helps!

  17. Thanks for the suggestions. To get posts I moved my cursor over the Subscribe option under Follow Me. Then I clicked on Subscribe with the orange RSS symbol in the upper left corner. That takes me to the Feedburner page. On that page I chose the View Feed XML option. On that page I chose the Subscribe in Mail option which sets up an inbox in my Mac Mail. This is the way I’ve subscribed to all the blogs I folow. Maybe it’s too cumbersome? Not really very expert with all this. Anyway, looks like I need to find another way to follow your posts as this isn’t working anymore. I’ll try the Notify me of new posts and see how that goes.

  18. Loving the pointed toed shoes. I like them with a little heel, say– one and a half inch. You have some great examples. I’d buy the purple pair with the ankle strap today!

  19. I love them too! I think they suit my feet better than the round toe ballet flats. I was resigned to my wide feet looking just that but the pointy toe really helps to make look longer and narrower. Can’t imagine bothering with heels any highter than kittens. You’ve chosen a wonderrful selection here – I want most of them!
