Makeover Workshop!

Saturday I attended one of Brian’s Holiday Makeover Workshops. The weather outside was frightful, but Brian had set up a comfortable, well lit and well equipped space. I’ve had countless makeovers done by cosmetic counter sales associates and makeup artists, but what this workshop really provided that those didn’t was a much more hands-on, how-to, personalized approach. Five women were in attendance, all d’un certain age, which was great as Brian was able to focus on what works for us. Yes Virginia, you really can wear eyeliner after fifty, and the technique Brian showed us is super easy, foolproof and quick enough to do every day, and yields subtle but dramatically eye-enhancing results. I’m an eyeliner convert!! We started with some simple daytime looks, then added some glam for evening. I’d fully intended to stop and take pictures at each stage, but was having so much fun I forgot. So without further ado…

Before:

Yowza! Can you say “sun damage”?

After:
All glammed up and ready for a night on the town. Alas, our babysitter was sick, so it was an early dinner with the whole family at the local Mexican place and then home to watch a movie on cable.

If you’re living in or plan to visit the LA area and are interested in attending one of Brian’s workshops, you can e-mail him at brian (at) makeoverworkshop (d0t) com.

  1. You have such a youthful face, though admittedly the makeup imparts a real dewiness!

Sorry about the babysitter; while I hope you get a chance to replicate the look for a romantic outing, I think that’s a very pretty everyday look–and I am not at all a “makeup person.”

[Trying to think how I can convince Mr Vix our upcoming trip to SoCal should include a stop-over at Brian’s, ha.]

  2. Such a polished, yet quite natural, look! I’d love a workshop like that. I’ve been thinking of getting a make-up lesson/update, but I’ve been stalling ’cause I want to make sure whoever I book with is attentive to the “maturity” issue — your guy obviously gets it!

  3. Gosh what fun – and you look absolutely wonderful too – what is the eyeliner technique by the way? You have a resemblance to the British actress Susan Hampshire in her younger days, of course!

  4. This is great. You are so brave. Never mind the dinner out, you’ve got the picture.

You look beautiful, but then I thought the same thing when I saw you in Paris and you didn’t mention you were traveling with a makeup artist.

    Luminous is the word.

  5. Thanks to everyone, you are all very kind.

For those who have asked about the eyeliner technique, I’ll try to put together a tutorial, but will probably need to enlist a photographer. It’s basically a tap, tap along the roots of the lashes from the underside, but will only work with a really soft, creamy pencil.

Renee – the makeup is from Brian’s own line of mineral makeup. The foundation is a loose powder mineral type, and the blush is a cream blush. The prices for his products are very reasonable. If you e-mail him, he can probably send you a price list.

Vix – you’re going to be in So Cal?? Will you have time to meet up?

  6. Wow from me too! Actually you look more natural in the after than in the before picture. This must be the best picture I have seen of you, yes!

  7. Your eyebrows look great. I read somewhere that one shouldn’t use eyeliner on lower part post-50, but you seem to have some there and it looks just fine–more than fine.

  8. Pseu –the short answer is “maybe.” The SoCal piece is part of a longer road trip, and we’re still trying to firm up dates/family stop-offs. Given that we’re supposed to be leaving soon, I should probably start to worry!

So let me email you with some more info and maybe we can plot a bit. I’d enjoy meeting you!

  9. You look beautiful! (though you look fine in the 1st shot too – good starting material:)

I love the fact that you still look like you – just glammed up a bit. Not a bit cakey or odd like some make-overs tend to be.

I’ll keep his info in mind for when I am less broke.

  10. Paula – yes, I’m still doing eyeliner most days. I find it’s a subtle way to make my eyes pop a bit, helpful especially as I wear glasses.

I’ve used cheek highlighters, but generally don’t use for day. Occasionally will use for evening. The one I use is from Brian’s own line, but if you’re looking for one also check out NARS, Laura Mercier, or MAC.

  11. I am catching up with all the Macquillage-labels. You look perfect, hope you did not quit the eyelining since 2009. Did you use a highlighter on the cheeks? I just heard about Becca highlighters and might buy one. i would love to hear you opinion on highlighters.
