Making a List….
In order to avoid wasteful spending and accumulating more of what I already have, I’ve promised myself to limit clothing/accessory purchases this year to only those items that either a) fill a hole in my current wardrobe or b) will add some interest, punch and panache to the mix. (“Hero” pieces, to use Duchesse’s Imogen’s term.)
Over the last couple of years, I’ve managed to cultivate a decent core wardrobe for work and play, and most of my favorite, frequently worn pieces are still in good shape and still fit (though fitting a bit more loosely these days, no complaints). The list of the wardrobe “holes”/needs, at the moment is thankfully rather short.
For the remaining months of cooler weather, just one thing:
1. High quality cashmere v-neck sweater preferably in charcoal grey or dark navy, but will consider black. (Bompard sale is coming up…)
Looking ahead to Spring:
2. Classic nude pumps (already have a pair in mind)
3. Casual, packable dress or skirt for travel in late spring. Perhaps one of each.
4. V-neck top for evening that a) isn’t black, b) is packable, c) can be worn with jeans, black pants, pencil skirt.
Edited to add:
5. Heel-length jeans (all of mine have now shrunk up to the point that they’re too short to wear with a heel).
C’est tout! I’ve printed this list up and plan to carry with me at all times to help stay focused when the Robins of Retail warble in dulcet tones. Hopefully this little piece of paper will be the talisman I need to keep the easily distracted magpie (Ooh, look! Pretty! Want!) part of my brain in check.
What’s on your list?

Neutral flats, a pencil skirt or two – I don’t own any and I would love to find a spring/summer coat to wear when it’s pouring with rain. I think coats look so much more elegant as they give a clean line but I’ve yet to find one that fits the bill and I’ve had my eyes open for years.
To give credit where it’s due, that’s Imogen Lamport’s term. Our posts are on the same theme today! I’d like two ‘short side of long’ skirts in a small print or colour, for spring.
Can I get an iPhone app that does not allow me to buy any more black?
Brora sale is starting on wednesday … high quality cashmeres too, better than Bompard IMHO.
Very much looking for travel skirts (a dress would be nice too, but so hard to find). Nude shoes are not my thing but would like to find in a colour softer than black or really bright colours.
Agree with Duchesse about the “short side of long” skirts – that are at least over the knee but not too long to ride my bicycle in!
Kalee, buying clothing while on a reducing diet/fitness programme could make a good subject for a post.

Meant to add this in my recent LA trip posts, but thought of you when I went into a Silver Lake dress shop (Matrushka)– like a few places in my neck of the woods, they create on site and can alter/change their patterns up and tailor to your body.
A bit of a retro leaning (a plus for me) and lots of classic shapes in a blend that looks and hangs a lot like silk jersey — thus ideal for travel.
I hope you check them out!
[I would definitely have bought had I not seen them next-to-last day; I’m too picky to get something fitted then shipped to me without a final try on.]

I’ve been craving the nude Louboutin peep toes ever since I saw them but then, of course, I’d need some things to wear WITH them:).
Need… not a good word.
Wide legged jeans,
nude shoes TBD style. Probably kitten heels.
Flat band-style gold ring that doesn’t look like a wedding band.
3 strand coin pearl necklace to replace the ones that broke, went back to the seller and never came back (le sigh).
Good quality cashmere–I’m so frustrated with the pilling on a new sweater.
Always on the lookout for good wrap dresses in below-the-knee length and small or no print (but not black).
My list contains mostly shoes as my weight loss goals make it ridiculous to spend much money on clothes until I’ve reached a point where they are very much needed. So, my list is nude colored pumps (I have some in mind too!), leopard print flats, new black flats, new red flats, royal purple heels and flats (I realized I don’t own a single pair of purple shoes!), and the long coveted black Christian Louboutin pumps.
I’m looking for some good black tops (existing ones are falling apart) so if you find any of those while looking for non-black tops, let me know!
I’m declaring myself done for the season. I managed to snag a few pieces I needed in the post-holiday sales, and now I’m going to live with what I’ve got.
Tan/beige/fawn heels, black jeans, a blue button-up shirt (have one in my sights already), two summer dresses (possibly one with a matching coat for good occasions and church). And to fit into the clothes already in my closet!
For this winter, a black pencil skirt. I have my eye on two from Porto.
I wouldn’t say no to a hot pink cashmere sweater, either.
I don´t n e e d anything. I have not needed anything for a long time, but yet I do buy clothes ( and return them ); ). If only I could keep my head cool!
I’ve been shopping nude heels also. I’d be curious to know which ones you have your eye on.
Oh – I’d just like to fit all the beautiful clothes I have! (Lack of exercise the past months, not due to lack of discipline) has me in the most dreadfully dull attire that even my beautiful chaussures are going to disown me!
I’m hoping to inch my way back (tra la) to a more fashionable “moi” – I am a fan of simple chic – I love my black and charcoal pencil skirts, my fitted tops and sweaters, black stockings and beautiful heels… And in winter – fabulous boots. I want to enjoy my winter wear before I think of spring!
(Okay. And maybe some argyle socks since my kids seem to be into them?)
BTW – I’m with you on the necessity of that big mug of black coffee in the a.m. It is definitely motivation to get out of bed!
I can’t wait to see the nude pumps you are considering. Post pictures, please!xo
Travel in spring. Are you going to Paris again?
I need a pair of mid-height shoes to wear with some wide-leg jeans; a lightweight jacket for summer/autumn; new ballet flats (haven’t decided colour); a pair of black velvelt trousers for next winter (planning ahead); a couple of shift dresses for autumn/winter. And always more scarves/accessories, plus a new handbag – having been carrying the same tired thing forever.
My list includes 2 pairs of incredibly elegant mid-heeled slip-ons (can be loafers or booties), and a trip to the tailor to have a few items whittled to perfection. I would also like to collect more silky scarves, and a scarf ring! Could it be you are a bad influence? 😉 Mais non…a good one!
Longer workout tops. My workout pants finally bit the dust, the elastic wouldn’t keep them up, so I’ve replaced multiple pairs.
Now all my perfectly good old tops are too short. Just because I’m at the Y doesn’t mean anybody wants to see that little muffin top over my waistband. So new tops for me.
you’re so organized — I’m trying to be more that way myself this year, and the way I’m starting right now is by NOT shopping. At the moment, I know that I really don’t need anything, although I’m sure those siren voices will soon be singing . . .
the cashmere navy-blue v-neck was “the” purchase this winter. so glad I found it, I bought a second one, because those good things are hard to find. since the cut and fabric is excellent I also bought the sweater in camel. and guess what: now that I have the navy-blue and the 2nd navy blue as a backup I end up wearing the camel one all the time. I guess I did not arrive in my new blonde-life after a life as a brunette for the last 37 years! Camel suddenly works great as a basic. You sure did hear of project 333 yet? I think I might give it a try …soon!
