Newtown

Source

In the wake of this inexplicable and overwhelming tragedy, the only comfort I’m finding is in the stories of the teachers whose courage and quick thinking kept their kids safe. Thank you to those brave teachers, and to all teachers out there. May you never be called upon to act with such swift courage.

My heart goes out to the families of both the victims and survivors, who will all have a hard road ahead.

  1. Such brave women, the ones who were killed and the ones who prevented more killing. I am in awe of their courage and ingenuity and selflessness.

  2. All I am able to write now, are that there is a tremendous work ahead to prevent something like this happening ever again.
    But that work m u s t start right n o w !!

  3. A dear friend of mine did her student teaching in Newtown and worked there in their summer art camp. I can’t imagine what she must be feeling right now.

I know how my mom, a second-grade teacher for many years, is feeling.

We need to deal with the way we provide mental health support, it’s true. In my opinion, it’s more important to make changes in gun laws, NOW.

Here in Spain we have plenty of mentally-ill people, many of whom live in the street, many of whom are violent. We need to do better by them. But the fact that none of them have the ability to obtain the sort of weapons used in Newtown means that we have never and will never have to grieve the way that community and indeed the whole United States are grieving right now.

  4. What makes this worse is that it´s hardly unexpected, considering what has happened over the last few years in the western world, not just the United States. My own inital reaction was “oh, another school shooting, where this time?”.

Gun control, yes, for sure. Adressing mental illness, yes. But the gun culture, that is the root of the problem.

The lone gunman is a glorified figure in our culture, a hero, and that must change.
