Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Preview/Picks

If you live near a Nordstrom department store, it’s hard to avoid the anniversary sale hype.  The sale merchandise is hidden from general view but showcased within curtained-off sections of the store, where one is escorted by a Sales Associate to the Vallhalla of new fall fashions that will be offered at something like 30-35% off.  The intended effect seems to be to give the customer the experience of being allowed beyond the velvet rope into the Super Special VIP Section, and gives a burnish to the merchandise that it might not otherwise have.

Which is my way of saying I’m mostly “meh” about the selections this year. There’s little clothing in the sale catalog that appeals to me, and seems to be inordinately comprised of capes, dolman sleeved garments, and more trendy pieces.

If I were in the market for a caramel colored leather jacket, I’d be all over this Lafayette 148 piece though. (Note: links won’t be active until the sale starts on July 15.)

And this Eileen Fisher knit skirt might be worth checking out.

I did see a few accessories that I’d consider too.

I’ve had my eye on some Alexis Bittar hinged bangles since LPC posted about them a while back. The amber colored one above suits my color scheme, but you wouldn’t go wrong with any of these.

If you’re still contemplating some motorcycle boots, maybe these Vera Wang Lavender’s will push you over the edge. (I know…Vera Wang Motorcycle Boots…it’s almost an oxymoron.)

Also really like these Frye boots. My own experience with Frye’s is that sizing can be capricious…if you’re ordering online and can’t try on, I’d suggest ordering your normal size and a 1/2 size smaller too. (Keep the one that fits better, return the other; Nordstrom has a good return policy.)

This Stuart Weitzman kitten heel pump in tortoise patent is very pretty. Even though they’re not listed in the catalog, the black, nude and red patent versions will also be on sale (a little birdy told me).

There’s a lot more sale merchandise at the stores than is shown in the catalog, so it’s worth a trip to the Brick-n-Mortar™ to check out and pre-sale any items that appeal to you. Happy shopping!

  1. I wonder if the “meh” factor is a sign of Seasonal Offerings to Come, or if Nordstrom’s buyers are having a slightly off-year? I have my eye on the pencil skirt you mentioned, and I’m thinking of buying the light-weight merino drape-neck sweater from the catalog in most of the colors (assuming it looks half as good on me as on the model). Thanks for the insight!

  2. I haven’t seen the catalog yet, so thanks for sharing your picks. Those motorcycle boots (the style name is “Lavender”??) look very cool. I like the bangles, but think I can score them for less. You can’t beat a classic knit pencil skirt for fall.

  3. The jacket, the skirt, the kitten heels, the Bittar…if I were still working I’d be all over that set of goods. And I do like my bangle – glad you do too. Keep looking for ways to wear it for every day. How fun if we were bangle buddies. Ha!

  4. Funny – I have a very similar suede jacket purchased for $80 in a consignment shop, and a gray pencil skirt too. However, I’ve been meaning to go over to Nordstroms anyway.

  5. I’d be on the Bittar bangles! Since I’d have to do mail, bots are out, costly to ship back if fit not right, but the bangles, ahhh. The leather jacket would be another pick; Lafayette 148’s leather is good quality.

  6. I just got the order I placed from the preview catalog — I got two pencil skirts, which are staying; a ridiculously complicated satchel, which is not; and the dress that I posted in my Polyvore, which I have to try on again with “foundation garments.” I’m on the fence about the fedora I got — only $15, but it’s not a style I wear because the crown tends not to be deep enough for my big noggin and curls. Maybe my sleek-haired sister will end up with it.

Since I’m not keeping the purse, I may get the bangle instead!

  7. Would love to get a pair of boots…Nordstrom’s is my favorite for service..they do the absolute best making their customers feel special!

  8. One of my all-time favorite skirts is an Eileen Fisher knit, but this new one is 21 inches long!! That’s a mini on me.YMMV

The caramel jacket is to die for!

  9. Wow-I just dropped in after being “absent” for a few months-you’ve dropped a ton of weight! How much? Please point me to the correct entries so I won’t bore you w/ any more questions. I’m impressed, you look great!

  10. Bonne Fête nationale! This will be my first Nordstrom’s sale in a land with no Nordstrom. Not a single one in all of Oklahoma. And I must agree that the pictures on line don’t have quite the appeal of the room upstairs or behind a curtain with all the samples for the special shoppers. Thanks for a great post!

Oh, and I bet Nordstrom knows and loves you with all of us running in and saying we have to look at this particular item that we saw on your blog. You deserve a discount.

  11. Glad you enjoyed the picks, everyone. The sale is on now and there are a lot more items listed on sale. Lots of Alexis Bittar stuff!

There are some additional Eileen Fisher pieces, including a longer pencil skirt in black. Alas, a sweater I was eyeing is already sold out!

Special – thanks! I’ve dropped just a few pounds mostly by limiting carbs and snacks and watching my portion sizes. Would still like to drop a few more if my body will cooperate.

Beryl – ah, if only! 🙂

  12. Oh dear; were we supposed to be escorted behind the gauze curtain? I crashed the sale, I guess.

I didn’t see the VW lavender boots but will return for a peek. I did see a pair of Calvin Klein platform leopard (fur) pumps that I did not try on but liked their sturdiness.

  13. I want to thank you for telling me about the sale. They have a lot of basics on sale too. Spanx tights and trouser socks. It’s worth spending the time looking at all of the sale items..

    Thank you again…
