Paris Loot – Les Sacs et Les Chaussures

This is the bronze Gerard Darel bag I mentioned here. I’ve been carrying this bag since I got home. I looked at some of the newer styles with outside pockets, zippers, etc., but they just didn’t have the appeal of the original version of this bag, which has been called “Charlotte” (after Charlotte Gainsbourg), the “Drape,” and now the “St. Germain.” I’ve learned to use small zippered pouches (the ones you get free from costmetics counters) for my small, loose items.

I truly had not planned to buy more than bag this trip, but fell in love with this color: a lovely smoky grey with just a hint of lilac. The leather is like buttah. Plus the energetic and amiable saleswoman at the Printemps Gerard Darel bag counter reminded us that we could get the 10% tourist discount coupon if we presented our passports at the Concierge desk.

On our way to the Musée Picasso (which unfortunately turned out to be closed for renovations), we passed a shoe store on the Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, which had a “20% off today!” sign in the window, and I spotted these….

…Shooties!! in the window. I’d been wanting a pair of these since last fall, but every pair in LA seemed to have stratospheric heels. These are just the right height, and so comfortable. Shopping serendipity….priceless!

  1. Great bags, but I loooooove the shooties! Perfect heel height and great chunky heel shape, the leather looks buttery with an interesting texture and that’s a great toe. And they were 20% off. And when people tell you how great they are and ask where you got them, you get to do that “Why these? Oh, I got these in Paris!” Never get tired of saying that;-)

  2. Oooh la la! Deja Pseu- what excellent shopping. Are those fabulous bags as giant as they look? Miss J is a-feared she stuff her life into them and need a dolley to cart them about. Still, they are divine.

    The shooties are 2 DIE!!!

  3. mater – thank you! They’re at the cobbler now getting rubber heels put on (I always do this with new shoes) and I pick them up tonight. Can hardly wait to wear them!

    wendyb – merci madame!

  4. LBR – yes, they’ll be great reminders of the trip! I also bought some perfume, will post about that soon.

metscan – thanks! I really like these bags and they aren’t available in the US (or only in very limited styles at inflated prices) so I knew I’d kick myself if I didn’t get them.

  5. Good thing you didn’t take those shooties out of the bag when you came over — I would have plied you with more champagne to get you to forget them! 🙂 Although I suspect your pointure is much smaller than mine . . . So where exactly did you find them?

  6. Chicamericaine – Any more champagne and I probably couldn’t have negotiated the Metro back to our hotel, never mind the shooties! 😉 I can’t remember the name of the store, but it’s on Rue Francs-Bourgeouis somewhere close to the Carnavalet.

  7. Paris purchases that endure are the best. Everytime I put on my perfumes from Paris I am transported back to the place I purchased these scents.

Fantastic boots and bag!! Love them.

  8. Miss Janey – it’s the handbag Trifecta!

Karen – thanks! Though I wish I’d had more time to hit some of the consignment shops you visited, it just wasn’t in the cards for this trip. Next time… 😉

  9. Came over from your post today 3/6/11 but had to comment about the ridiculous height of heels on shoes sold in the USofA. I can no longer handle heels much over 2″ thanks to a knee that needs replacing & too many years of wearing high heels etc. It frustrates me no end as I love so many of the current styles and would experiment if the heels were manageable.
