Signs Of Autumn

Fall styles for women from Paris: Sezane Alceste merino wool cardigan navy. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Autumn is officially here, even if it’s still feeling like summer in many locales. Under the heading of “buy now, wear later” here are a few things on my style radar for cooler (and wetter) days ahead.

From Paris With Love: Fall Styles For Women

Sezane’s Autumn collection just dropped, and there are some really lovely pieces in it. What I like about this brand (besides their commitment to sustainability) is that their styles exemplify that French “basics, but with interesting details” aesthetic. Take that navy cardigan above. The scalloped edges and (slightly) puffed sleeves take the style quotient up a notch. Wear it open or closed. It’s a versatile, travel-friendly piece.

Florals are everywhere this Fall, but you don’t see many with a brown rather than black background. This blouse is light enough to wear on its own while the weather’s still warm, and will layer nicely underneath a sweater or jacket. Even though I’m not usually a florals gal, this print charmed me. I ordered and I’m keeping it. The tie is removable. The fabric is sheer, so I’ll add a lightweight camisole underneath. (Seems to run TTS; my usual size 38 was a good fit.)

I’m also really tempted to try this little bomber jacket, which could be a great transitional season piece. (And one that wouldn’t feel to heavy come Spring.) It’s also offered in a black and white houndstooth which looks pretty great too.

This lightweight wool scarf is so pretty!

If you’re concerned about ordering from Europe, don’t worry: delivery and returns from the U.S. are free. I’ve found that a lot of their popular styles can sell out quickly, so if I see something I like, I don’t hesitate.

Women’s Weatherproof Ankle Boots

There’s actually some rain in the forecast later this week, which reminded me that I want to update my weatherproof ankle boots. They’re one of my preferred footwear styles for travel, plus if we have another wet winter, they’ll get plenty of use at home. It’s easy enough to find options in black, but I’m holding out for something in my warm color palette.

I’ve been wanting a pair in cognac for some time, and with Aquatalia offering 20% off full-price styles, I may have to jump on these.

But I’ll admit, I’m also tempted to go with something animal print. If my palette were cooler, I’d be all over these.

  1. Susan, I absolutely love that blouse! I’m with you on florals – I don’t usually like them. But, this is an exception and the brown works so well with my color palette. I am so tempted to buy it. Thanks for doing the research you do for us!

  2. Susan, some of us who are allergic to wool would love to see any sweaters you happen to run across that aren’t wool but that also aren’t cheap and flimsy looking. The navy one in today’s post is yummy but off-limits. Thanks so much.

  3. Susan, there are actually some COTTON and other non-allergenic natural fibres that I’ve seen in quality knits.

  4. Nice clothing, but they only offer up to XXXL which translates to a size 12. Wow! Is this correct Susan?

I’m in France now and willl be in Paris in early October.

    Thanks.

  5. Hi Dear Clever Stylish Susan! Looking for how you pack my toiletries in the EMME for 2 weeks. I know you have posted about this but can’t find it.
Specifically amounts and products for skincare. Thank you! HELP!!!

  6. After listening to a podcast this a.m. I realized why so many of us love your blog. You encourage many of us to “elevate” our style. I appreciate that you encourage us to buy the best we can afford. In doing so we actually buy less. You and a couple of other bloggers encourage us to “elevate” our expectations by example and I really do appreciate it.

  7. I want to thank you, Susan, for introducing me to new brands and new products. I don’t think I’m as good a online shopper as you are. I get overwhelmed by all the choices. I have bought, and loved, lip stick (Chantecaille) and AG Cropped Cigarette Jeans (full length for a shorty) among others. I have invested in some longer lightweight cardigans after seeing how great you look in them. I looked at the Aquatalia site today and found some animal print flats in wide and took advantage of the sale. I have not heard of the Sezane brand but love what I see so far. I have also worked to incorporate much more color in my purchases. Thank you for opening up my design horizons!

    1. Would the snakeskin bootie work with the long cardigan from Monday? And mix in a little brown or tan in the top, pants… Just a thought. Lots of pretty things but still in the eighties where I live!!

  8. Hi Susan, I purchased the Wonder shoes in my regular size 8 and am finding them a bit big and slipping off my heels. Did you find they ran a bit big and size down with your Wonder shoes? I’m leaving for my trip next week and Nordstrom isn’t allowing expedited shipping on this item. So disappointed as they’re very comfortable and it’s so difficult for me to find shoes. This pair took almost ten days to arrive so I’m not hopeful.

    1. Hi Lisa, I kept my normal size but added heel grips to keep them from slipping. The next size down was too small for me.
