Colorful pottery on display at marché in Aix-en-Provence, April 2012

Thanks again to everyone for the encouraging and supportive comments this week. It’s interesting how we sometimes see ourselves so very differently than others see us!

Are those of you in the U.S. planning for a big Thanksgiving celebration? It’s just going to be the three of us this year, so I’m off the hook for cooking, cleaning, decorating. Part of me is a little disappointed; I really enjoy hosting Thanksgiving, but as I live with two picky eaters who aren’t particularly into Thanksgiving foods, there’s no point in knocking myself out. I’ll take this opportunity to relax.

N’oubliez pas, Wednesday 11/21 is Show Me The Brooches day.  I’ll have the link-up widget set up in the post that day, so do check back and link up your blog posts showcasing your pins and brooches. Those of you who do not have blogs but have some favorite brooches to share, please email me by Monday with pictures and a brief description, and I’ll include them in the body of the post.

Bon weekend!

  1. I so agree with Thyme. Too many years we were forced by the generation before us to have a certain kind of holiday celebration. Trying to change that brought on their very vocal displeasure. The main issue was always Christmas dinners. Our Thanksgiving will be at our farm with our older son, our daughter in law and two grandsons. Our menu will be fairly classic, but simple. I don’t feel pressure with they younger generation to make everything perfect -thank goodness.

  2. I’ll miss my one son who is a newbie at work and can’t get off. I’ve always been one to work the day after so it’s never been a multi-day event for me.

  3. It IS a little sad when your dinner gets down to the immediate family. It will be just our nuclear family also–though my son keeps saying he might invite some French couch surfers.

I’ve been simplifying the dinner over the last few years. The best thing: the leftovers, which make a great gumbo.

    1. I’m feeling this too; we’ve been invited to my cousin’s for Thanksgiving, so that will be a lively affair. Christmas is the one I’m a little sad about, as it will be just the four of us. My parents are now gone, & my brother isn’t coming this year. We’ve always had guests for Christmas…not sure how it will feel with just the little nuclear family. Sometimes I wish I’d had more kids! Although two was plenty to manage when they were babies & I was working full time!

  4. I’ll have all the little indians home for Thxgvng–but not for xmas! Glad NOT to be cooking–I’m like Catherine Hepburn in the kitchen in Women of the Year! lol
Well wishes to you and yours!

  5. We always take all this celebrations with a pinch of salt and make it our own way. Make each other presents and cards for Christmas and eat reasonably, rather than piggy, lol, so we are not stress, but happy to be together.
    Much love.

  6. Visiting foreign lands is so hard for me because I just want to buy everything I see and bring it back! Thanksgiving dinners – we often feel pressured to recreate Norman Rockwellisque scenarios – life and times change and I’m all for customizing holidays to fit my life. The most important ingredient to bring to any table is love and that is something I know you have in abundance! This is your time to relax and just enjoy the fruits of your labor. Enjoy yourself.

  7. Thanksgiving will be small and Christmas big…I am happy to cook for both!! I still enjoy cooking the special meals! Enjoy you time of rest!

  8. Oh, do make the most of your well-deserved opportunity to relax, sounds marvellous!
I am so looking forward to Show Me The Brooches!

  9. I miss the small Thanksgiving dinners! Although I don’t have kids and my husband’s family is in Britain, I’m again in the same town as my mother and sister, and my sister’s widely extended family – there’ll be 20 this year! (Fortunately not in our house!)

  10. It is just my husband and me for Thanksgiving. Last year, he went to his mom and dad’s and I stayed here alone (trust me, I was the winner in this deal), watched movies, and ate Fritos.

This year, we will make a steak, scalloped potatoes, cream cheese stuffed bacon wrapped jalapenos, caesar salad, and tiramisu and watch movies.

Then on Friday afternoon, I have to leave on a business trip to the Middle East, which does not thrill me. 1. I hate losing my long weekend. 2. My company pays for coach. I have gotten spoiled with my international trips with my husband, where we have splurged with FF miles on business class. On this 16 hour flight, I will be in a middle seat in coach. Yay.

But at least my husband’s campaign for state office is over, so he is mine again on weekends. I’ll have him for one luxurious lazy day.

    1. Such a bummer to have to travel on the holiday weekend, especially for such a long distance. I hope you and your hubby have a wonderful Thanksgiving day. Stay safe during your travels, maybe you’ll get lucky with seat partners 🙂

  11. I love Thanksgiving, and am looking forward to celebrating it here with Spanish and American friends. We’re doing a sort of potluck, but the turkey will be cooked at my house and we’re eating here, too. The trick is to find a small enough turkey to (1) fit in my tiny oven and (2) not leave the six of us (3 couples) with months’ worth of leftovers. So far, the person in charge of buying hasn’t been able to find anything under 8 kilos — yikes!

  12. There will only be 4 of us this year. Most of the grandparents are no longer living. We have a small circle of family. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. No cooking for me, just going out to eat and enjoying myself.

  13. No turkey here for Thanksgiving. But one for sure for Christmas dinner… Still faithful to the French tradition – though we have been living in Florida for ten years now….
Love your photo of colorful “poteries”.
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  14. Luckily we don´t have Thanksgiving over here.
Christmas is ” bad enough “, with all the expectations, traditions connected to it.
However, now we no longer have the older generation to take in consideration, I feel more at ease.
