Retail reconnaissance: a few things that caught my eye this week

Whew, did the last few days ever get away from me! It’s been productive and I’ve ticked a lot of “to-do’s” off my list(s), and have seen a few color clients.

I LOVE doing color analysis. There’s always that moment during the analysis draping when you put a certain color on someone and it’s like turning on a light switch. It’s magic. ✨ I know wearing color can be intimidating. (It certainly was for me, until I learned which colors work best and how to wear them.) But color can be enlivening, and wearing something colorful can be a real mood and confidence booster.

I spied some really fun pieces this week (both colorful and neutral) either for holiday outfits or just to add some zing to your everyday wardrobe.

Bright new things…

I spent a little time in my local J.Crew store earlier this week, checking out the new stuff. This bouclé tweed “lady jacket” is a neutral red, so could work for all color seasons. (Though Summers and Winters might want to replace those gold buttons with silver.)

It’s unusual to find this style of jacket with a v-neck, and I’ll admit I was tempted by it. It’s also available in Navy, both colors in sizes 00-24, and it’s currently marked down!

You could wear this blazer with the matching pants, or over a dress, or even with jeans. This blue is in the Winter palette, though some Blue Springs may be able to wear it as well. Sizes 00-24, also in bright pink and black.

Here’s one for you Summers. The fluffy texture and jeweled buttons make this a piece you can dress up or down. Also in Navy (Summer, Winter) and Pink (Summer), sizes XX-Small to 3X.

I’ve been telling my Winter clients that there are a lot of great emerald pieces out there now, and this is one example. This cotton sweater is currently marked down, sizes XX-Small to 3X. Several other neutrals available too.

Here’s another take on the velvet jacket…this shorter style can work well with wide leg pants or longer, fuller skirts. This bright pinky red is in between Raspberry and Carmine in the Winter palette. But I think some Springs might be able to wear it as well. (The other color, “Buff Clay,” is in between Cream and Banana in the Spring palette but I think most Autumns could wear it too. I have that one on order.)

It’s also currently marked down, Sizes 00-24. I think it runs just a little large, suggest trying one size down.

If you think Eileen Fisher only makes clothing in black or gray, take another look. This season they’re been offering some really interesting colors. Here’s a silk shirt in Blue Violet (Winter). Sizes XXS-2X. (Some sizes sold out in this color, but other colors available.)

This relaxed velvet ballet neck top is a perfect “festive, not fussy” outfit-maker. There are several colors available (most in the Winter palette); this Serpentine is great for Autumns. Sizes XXS-3X.

A little razzle dazzle

I’m always on the lookout for fun, statement earrings that aren’t heavy, and these (gold) came home with me. My cool season clients have been telling me it’s been hard to find cute silver jewelry, but I think that’s starting to change. I’m seeing a lot more styles being offered in both gold-tone and silver-tone this season.

I love this mashup of serious plaid and playful sparkle. They’re even better looking in person. This loafer style is always well-reviewed. These could work equally well with jeans or a satin skirt…

And Autumns, check out the tapestry print.

  1. Love all the color! The plaid/sequin shoes are my favorite. Can’t get on board with all these cropped jackets, though; as a tall person with a bit of a tummy, that’s my WORST look. Something about that hot pink/red suit looks really off to me. Maybe it’s the proportion of the jacket to the pants, and the model’s body type? Or is it just me? 😉

    1. I totally agree with you about the cropped jackets. I think you have to be small and dainty to wear them, like Susan!
The colours are great though! And the sequin tweed shoes!

  2. I always love the way your choices have a very classic style, but just that little bit of something that makes them fun.

  3. Ooh. Love the emerald sweater and blue velvet blazer! I was lucky enough to snag the Eileen Fisher blue-violet silk blouse a few months ago and have loved wearing it. It’s amazing how many gorgeous colors are available for Winters right now — yay!

  4. Susan,
You always find the most wonderful items for us! And now with your knowledge of color and “seasons”, you are doubly dangerous to my wallet. 🙂 Thanks as always for all your hard work. 🙂
