Rome – A Few Impressions

Internet connection is mind-numbingly slow this morning, so am having trouble uploading any pictures.

I’m taking copious notes and lots of pictures, so will have plenty to show you, but here are some top-line observations from our wanderings and eatings yesterday:
  1. Rome is packed with tourists and it isn’t even high season yet. Americans mostly, from what I can tell.
  2. If there’s any one style trend I’ve observed on Italian women in Rome, it’s white jeans.  Usually skinnies (the jeans AND the women).  They’ve taken to this trend with a vengeance, and usually some black platform heeled sandals.
  3. Men in Rome are on the whole very well dressed. Granted, we’re in the country’s capitol, but more suits and ties seen on the street than at home, and even younger men wearing well-tailored suits (often without the tie).
  4. All of the Italians we’ve come in contact with have been very warm, friendly, helpful and patient with our mangled Italian. Le monsieur has spent a lot of time memorizing some common phrases, and is often complimented on his attempts to speak Italian. It’s a beautiful language.
  5. The espresso here is everything it’s cracked up to be. I could drink it all day if I didn’t need to sleep at some point.
I’ll try again later to upload some pictures but we have a busy day ahead and I spent a couple hours yesterday trying to resolve the e-mail issues. (It’s now looking like it may have been the email server that was hacked, not me personally, but I’ll probably never know.)

  1. How friendly are the Italians? We were just saying the same thing on this trip, they are so much warmer than Parisians, we had a ball, enjoy yourself and forget about the Internet and blogging, you’re on holiday!

  2. Isn’t people-watching in Italy fun? Italians know how to put things together without looking too matchy-matchy. I look forward to further observations.

Enjoy your doppio espresso and remember that espresso has less caffeine than American brewed coffee.

    Cheers!

    Marie

  3. Hello:
All of this confirms in our minds that Italy is one of the most stylish of all nations.

A great pity about so many tourists – they get everywhere!!

We shall much look forward to your pictures. In the meantime, have a wonderful day.

  4. End of May IS high season in Italy. Actually Central Europe, all cities get crowded in Europe this time of the year. Happy to read you are enjoying the cafe.

I would love to listen to you speaking Italian.

A colleage and love those desinations the best, where you find only a few tourists, no heat and lots of nature. Alaska, Greenland and what else? 😉

Which city is next on your route Europe?

  5. So good to hear from you. In an odd harmonic convergence, I am just on the way to SF to look for white jeans:). No skinnies though, they look terrible on me. Thank you for doing this traveling:).

  6. Thanks so much for taking time to post this, Pseu! You’re really amping up my desire to see this city, check out its well-dressed men and women, test its trademark espressos. I’m impressed with le Monsieur’s effort to speak the language — I think that opens many doors, even just in the effort, never mind how effective. Curious to know if he was more drawn to learn some Italian than he was to French.

  7. Oh, girl, please don’t spend another moment on email and blog issues on your gorgeous trip. Go live your life, a million photos and write in a journal over an espresso, and then tell us all about it when you get back. We’ll wait for you!

(It’s never really a vacation till you disconnect.)

  8. Oh how I miss the espresso bars in Rome!

We decided Italian women must be a higher evolved life form because that would be the only way to explain their ability to walk with confidence in high heels on uneven surfaces.

  9. How great of you to post so soon! Must be the caffeine–remember, before you leave Florence, you must sample the gelato…(I alway leave it til the end of the trip, so it doesn’t show up on my end…white jeans, heaven have mercy!). The Italians truly are very lovely hosts, and the first time I was there, was at the END of the tourist season, when you’d think they’d be fed up with tourists…not at all. They were unbelievably kind and welcoming.

  10. Just a word of warning…if you decide to visit the Galleria Borghese, be prepared for heavy duty security measures,(you have to check everything but your dentures) so bring as little as you possibly can…it is a real nuisance, but seeing the Bernini sculptures are well worth it.

  11. I like white jeans (though they looked nicer when I was skinnier). Years ago, we used to have “wheat jeans” – they were a very light khaki color, I think they were more versatile, and I wish I could find them again.
