Room With A View

Monday afternoon: snow, and lots of it.

Yesterday, I had one of my best skiing days ever, despite the extreme conditions (more on why in an upcoming post).

We’d had a couple of incredible runs at the top of the mountain in the afternoon, but it suddenly it started snowing hard and it was getting hard to see. The wind was blowing and it felt like being continually hit in the face with a slushie. Thank goodness for goggles! We made our way down the mountain and by the time we got to the last bit, it was so socked in we really couldn’t see more than a few feet in front us.

It looked like this:

Compared to the day before:

Still, I’d skied well and was feeling ecstatic and pretty darn proud of myself for handling the heavy snow  and lack of visibility.

Today, it’s a bit iffy. They’re talking -12F/-24C with wind chill, and even bundled up adequately, it could be pretty miserable out there, especially for petit monsieur. And if he doesn’t ski, we don’t ski. Tomorrow’s supposed to be even colder. (Thursday and Friday are currently predicted to be sunny and warmer, though.)  If we don’t ski today, I’ll do some Retail Reconnaissance and report back.

Update: It’s really not that bad out, so we’ve sent petit monsieur off with the instructor and we’ll be heading out ourselves in a bit, and will stick to some of the lower elevation runs on the more wind-protected slopes.

  1. Congrats on your first blizzard skiing! I am not jealous. No. Not.
Actually, yes, but what the hey! The best part about skiing in the nasty is coming back to the lodge for an apres ski irish coffee by an open fire pit. Yum!

  2. Went through this between Christmas and New Years w/ my 4 year olds. Got them all suited up for their first time skiing, new gloves, face masks, skis, ski school, etc…. Temp was -10 F or so. 30 minutes on the slopes, they were done. Nothing was refundable of course. Sigh.
    Hope your petit fares better!

  3. I remember skiing in conditions like that as a kid (when you grow up skiing in New England, it’s almost impossible not to ski in conditions like that). After a freezing day on the slopes, we’d thaw out with a dip in our hotel’s pool, a bake in the sauna, and a lot of cocoa. Then back out for more the next day.

I’m off to the Berkshires this weekend, and I think I’m going to skip the skiing part and just do the thawing-out part. Hazards of advancing age, you know.

  4. I wish I were as brave as you — I’m not good with the combination of speed and height! We used to cross-country ski quite a bit, but haven’t been out for years and years. You’re an inspiriation!

  5. -24 C plus chill? Lets move on to the chalet open fire place …
I enjoy the photos a lot! Especially when sitting in the warm. 🙂

  6. PS: when you nose turns white, it is a sign of frost and damage to the skin! Can happen fast, even when you wear a cold protection cream. Take care!

  7. That sounds like fun. Snowy, snowy day. There is nothing like a snow fix. But I know what you mean about visibility, it makes the fun a little more challenging. Stay warm!
