Room With A View

Monday night’s view.  We stayed here:
The Pelican Inn and the rooms are designed to be reminiscent of a 16th Century Tudor inn.  The room was small but très charmant.

There’s also a “Snug Room” where hotel guests can relax with a drink and read, or play board games.
We went for a walk to Muir Beach just a few hundred yards from the hotel…
Past a lovely lagoon to the beach itself.

Then around dusk we popped over here for an early evening stroll through the redwoods.

There’s nothing on this earth like the smell of a coastal redwood forest.  The mix of redwoods, ferns, bay trees, and loam is just incredible.  If I could design a fragrance, this would be the base.
Now we’re in Napa.  Here are today’s views:

The temperature here on Tuesday was 101F.  Things are supposed to begin cooling down by a few degrees today, fingers crossed.  (I hear we just missed the Hell On Earth day in Los Angeles on Monday.)  We visited the Frank Family Vineyards in the afternoon, and swung by the little town of Calistoga where I found a decent crushable raffia sun hat.  By the time this posts we’ll be off for our early morning hot air balloon ride, and then some more wine tasting.
Hope to have another update and more pics in a day or two!

  1. Ditto to the glories of a redwood forest’s scent! And Muir is so gorgeous.

The views you’ve had look stunning and the trip sounds wonderful thus far.

Somehow 100+ on vacation with wine sounds more bearable than 100+ while daily responsibilities grind on — good luck with the heat!

[And if you have time, inclination, and a car you might want to hit Sonoma while you’re “in the neighborhood….”]

  2. Quaint and English looking come to mind seeing your accommodations…and a snug is very traditional.
The furniture and decor look very old and charming.

I wonder perchance if you’ll meet up with Lisa from a mid life of privilege blog, she is holidaying in that area as well!

Enjoy your holiday…I hear the weather has been very hot!

  3. looks like fun! and it’s supposedly cooling down today – or tomorrow – …

i did a bit of a double-take on seeing your post. i’ve never been inside the Pelican Inn, but a good friend has been there countless times over the years…the same good friend who has been working at Muir Woods the last few years. now THAT’s a great place to visit when it’s hot~! Calistoga, on the other hand, tends to get some of the higher temps in the area…did you get to stroll around the town and check out any of calistoga’s great little victorian cottages?

have a great time and thank you for taking the time to post pics while on vacation! steph

  4. We crossed! Yesterday was sweltering, today was down about 10 degrees, and as we drove back into SF today, we could see the fog coming in over the Golden Gate Bridge. I did see balloons this morning, up by Napa. I wonder if you were in them!

  5. My relatives live in Cotati, so we visit Northern CA every summer. Lucky us. I hope it cools down soon. My father-in-law said there has been a breeze.

I was trying to see what the portrait in your room is–there is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth I called the Pelican Portrait. I don’t think that’s the one in your room, but check it out. Pelicans have all sorts of symbolic meaning.

  6. My husband and I spent the weekend of our engagement at the Pelican Inn! If you stayed in Room 2 our initials are carved on the bedpost.

So glad that you had a wonderful time.
