Style Formula: Simple, With Interest

simple pieces with interesting details

Most days, I don’t want to employ a complex calculus in order to get dressed. I like to keep it simple and rely on a stable of cohesive, basic pieces for my wardrobe foundation. But simple can easily drift toward boring, so I’m paying more attention to pieces that add some visual interest and personality to the mix. Takeaway: the more simple your style, the more the details matter.

Thanks to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post. All ideas, opinions and words are my own.

Even when it comes to accent pieces, I tend to shy away from anything too complicated, contrived or fussy. Give me clean lines, some eye-catching detail, or an appealing color, without sacrificing comfort or functionality. I’m always on the lookout for clothing and accessories that are easy to style and play nicely with the rest of my wardrobe without being too generic.

Here’s what I’m talking about…

  1. The ruffled edges on this chambray blazer take it from nice to notable.
  2. Multi-colored embroidery on simple leather wrap bracelet is eye-catching on its own, but could also be a great way to link different colors in an outfit.
  3. I’ve been eyeing this satchel bag for some weeks now. It has both an interesting shape and a functional design, and that orange color would really add some zing to my neutrals. The light blue color is also quite pretty!
  4. If you love the idea of a utility jacket, but various shades of olive just aren’t your thing, here’s one in a stunning cobalt blue. (Available in Petite sizes too!)
  5. A simple nude shell gets a lift from artistic beading. Add an easy, lightweight silk jacket and pants for a no-fuss Special Occasion look.

Nordstrom carries a great selection of simple-but-interesting pieces from popular brands like Eileen Fisher, J.Crew and Tory Burch. They include Misses, Petites and Plus sizes (when offered by the brand) and a good selection of colors. Shipping and returns are always free.

What kinds of details do you look for in clothes and accessories?

  1. I have that J.Crew jacket in the cobalt and the khaki. Love them both. I’ve also been carrying an orange bag and find it goes well with most things (other than all black.) I liked those cardigans you linked yesterday on FB – are you going to do a post on them?

    1. Yes, I’m going to include the cardigan in an outfit post soon. 🙂 I liked it so much I bought a second color…

  2. No ruffles for me! LESS IS MORE! The truth is that no matter what you put on it’s how you wear it! Attitude rules supreme! Also fit! If your too tight pants are wrinkled in the back it’s a “goner”. I see too much of this and it surprises me that people don’t look in the mirror to watch their “derrière”!
    Thx for sharing!

  3. I have the chambray regent ruffled blazer and love it! I ordered the ruffled pants but when they were delivered, the dye lot was different so I returned the pants. Nice selection!!

  4. FYI, the Lagoon Blue jacket is not available in XL at Nordstrom (not just out of stock, not available). So I went to the JCrew website, and not only do they have it in my size, but it was on sale for $119.00! Glad I didn’t just give up….

  5. I love that blue jacket, but it is final sale, so I went to J Crew to get a size estimate, since people were saying it ran large. When I returned to the website to buy it, they had 50% off final sale prices! So I ordered it…only $59.99! Super excited to get it, as the reviews are uniformly positive. Thanks for the link!
