Elevate Your Style with Statement Accessories

For those of us who prefer simple, timeless styles, accessories can make the difference between an outfit that’s just OK and one that sings. For most of us, 6-10 “points of interest” is the sweet spot for creating outfits that look finished but not overdone. Of course, that doesn’t mean 6-10 accessories, but a few well chosen pieces can go a long way. Today I’m featuring statement accessories to elevate your fall and winter outfits.

Going for the bold: the statement scarf

With the arrival of cooler weather, I’ve been leaning back into scarves again. Oversized scarves are more popular that ever this season, and can be a great way to add a bold statement to your outfit. Inspired by some Scandi street style images I saved from last winter, and the gorgeous colors in this new Ruti scarf, I decided to dip a toe in.

(I wanted to photograph this look outdoors, but it was so windy my tripod almost blew over, so had to move inside. 🤪)

My sizes: Jacket – XS, Sweater – S, Pants – Petite Medium

One of the things I love about scarves is that they can be a way to tie together colors within an outfit. This gorgeous scarf pulls in all of the solid colors I’m wearing here. The taupe straight-leg corduroys are from Eileen Fisher. I’m usually a Petite Small in her pants, but sized up to a Medium for a more relaxed fit.

Here’s the look without the jacket so you can see the sweater color, and how well it ties in with the scarf. (Sweater is from a prior season, and the color is no longer available in this style; here’s a similar one.) One of the best things about sticking to my color palette is how well everything coordintes, both older pieces and new!

For more budget-friendly options, check out these fringed scarves from COS. And this wool-free style from Nordstrom. Lands’ End has a nice one too.

More statement accessories

But if an oversized scarf isn’t for you, take a look at some of these (and other statement accessories that caught my eye). And stay tuned for a very special scarf collaboration that I’ll be sharing soon, just in time for the holidays!

I recently discovered the Tartan Blanket Company, and if you love heritage prints (especially plaids and tartans), you’ll want to check them out. This standard-sized wool scarf in a blue houndstooth print could be a good one for you Summers and Winters.

Talbot’s Cashmere Plaid Scarf – $179

Vibrant color (good for you Winters) in a 100% cashmere scarf. (And it’s included in the Buy-1-Get-1-50%-Off promotion!)

Black Pearl Necklace – $260

Summers and Winters, take a look! I don’t often come across pearl jewelry with silver-toned hardware, so wanted to share this right away. This modern statement necklace can work with both dressed up and casual outfits.

Pearl & Filigree Medallion Earrings – $187

The new French Kande Saint Cloud Holiday collection has so many gorgeous pieces! But I’m particularly taken with these pearl and 24-carat gold plated filligree statement earrings.

Pearl Brooch – $48

Brooches are back, and can be a great option during the cooler months to add to interest to a winter coat, or fasten a scarf. I love the modern look of this gold and pearl brooch, but some of the best can also be found at vintage, thrift, and consignment stores.

Statement accessories can really elevate a simple outfit, or dress up a look for the holidays and other gatherings. What are some of your favorite statement accessories?

  1. I LOVE the black pearly necklace, but wish it were a couple of inches longer. I have found that over the years my neck area has become more sensitive and it bothers me to wear shorter necklaces and turtlenecks….UGH!

  2. The first outfit shown is fabulous! I love the boots and scarf. I think scarves are the perfect accessory during the cooler month but I do not have a lot of confidence with styling them.

  3. Great post! I must say though, the star of the pictures are the baby rolling on the floor behind mom. What a cutie!!

  4. I’m working to build my spring pallet, and that taupe is still confusing to me. That being said, I love how you incorporated it into your outfit. Very nice

  5. Wow, that black pearl necklace is spectacular. And you are right, it’s hard to come by cool metals. Thanks.

  6. I’m totally a scarf person. Have the one of the Black brand leopard scarves and a Quince pashmina bookmarked for Cyber Monday. Thanks for the tartan blanket company link. For jewelry, I rely on real gold/gold over silver simple earrings due to a metal sensitivity. Love the necklace.

  7. Susan, do you think the Talbots scarf would be good for a Dark Summer? My first thought was, “perfect for my sister! “ But then I read your copy… Thx!

    1. Hi Cola, I haven’t seen the scarf in person, but online it looks like it might be too saturated for most Summers.
