Summer Ready: Comfortable and Stylish Sandals for Women Over 50

Summer has just started, and it’s time to think about updating our warm-weather wardrobes. With the sun shining and temperatures rising, I’m all about chic, comfortable sandals. Comfort is key, especially as we spend more time outdoors and on our feet. I’m excited to share my top picks for comfortable and stylish sandals for summer. Whether you’re planning a beach getaway, a garden party, or just some leisurely strolls, these sandals will have the style and comfort you need to last all summer long. Let’s find those perfect pairs before the best styles sell out!

Comfortable and stylish sandals for women over 50

As we age, our feet may become more “finicky.” So I’ve narrowed down this selection to styles that I’ve either tried myself or are well-rated for comfort.

Flat and T-strap sandals (with support!)

When it comes to effortless style and all-day comfort, flat and T-strap sandals are top contenders. Perfect for casual outings and everyday wear, these sandals provide the support you need without compromising on style. Featuring cushioned footbeds and sturdy soles, they ensure you can walk for miles without discomfort.

Wedge sandals

Wedge sandals are crafted to provide a subtle lift, ideal for adding a touch of height and elegance when needed, while ensuring comfort remains paramount. When considering heeled sandals, I recommend prioritizing comfort and walkability over overly high heels or complicated designs. Featuring cushioned footbeds and secure straps, they offer stability and support without compromising on style.

Slingbacks and Slides

Slingbacks and slide sandals epitomize effortless summer sophistication. Slingbacks, with their chic strap around the heel, offer a secure fit and a touch of elegance, perfect for both casual outings and more formal occasions. Slide sandals, on the other hand, boast easy slip-on design with no fuss, ideal for quick errands or relaxing by the pool. Both styles prioritize comfort with cushioned footbeds and supportive materials, ensuring all-day wearability.

As we embrace the warmth and leisure of summer, finding the perfect sandals becomes not just a matter of style, but of ensuring our comfort and confidence throughout the season. Whether you opt for wedged sandals for a touch of height or prefer the ease of slide sandals and slingbacks, the key is to prioritize what makes you feel your best. Do you have a favorite summer sandal?

  1. My favorite brand for any kind of shoe is Frankie4. Just wonderful. And customer service is the best.

  2. Thanks!
I have gone back to shopping for shoes in person and find the Happy Feet + stores carry many of the higher quality brands. I found the Mephistos to have a lower arch than I expected and lower than the Birkenstocks. Tried Finn Comfort and Aertrex (sp?) and Revere as I need a wide toe box but have an average foot and a narrow heel and could not find one that at the moment, my feet really liked.
Got a Strive sandal which so far, my feet are very happy with. Strive was originally a UK orthopedic brand, and is now US also, and makes PowerStep insoles, which are built in to all their shoes. Nice leather, adjustable straps, cushioning and support.

  3. I have had good experiences with Dansko, Skechers, and with Fitflop, and yes, a great pair of Mephistos years ago. I wonder if anyone has tried the Vivaio sandals advertised on this website? They look promising. I look for a cushioned sole, slightly elevated platform to give some height and more cushioning, and straps that hold my foot well to keep them healthy.

  4. I own several styles of Taos sandals as well as Taos sneakers. They are very comfortable and supportive and fit well with my high instep.

  5. This is a good round-up, thanks! I need a lot of arch support – I wear Vionic sneakers – and currently my favorite sandal is the Aetrex Jillian. I’m on my second pair. I’ve even worn them on walking tours in European cities. Perhaps not super chic but they work for me.

  6. I recently rediscovered Talbots sandals, mainly because they come in size 10.5 (which rapidly sells out because no one else seems to make this size). I don’t normally wear gold, but there are several soft gold sandals that were exactly what I was looking for. The Keri shells and Keri dot are my favorites.

  7. Great post, Susan! I love my Josef Seibel Tonga sandals in the Anthrazite color (a dark pewter). I need good arch support and comfort cushioning on the bottom of my foot, which can be a hard combo to find. The middle Velcro strap holds my arch securely. They’re great all day walking shoes, and the color goes with everything. They’re going to Portugal with me in the fall!

  8. I love all of these brands. Comfort and quality are so important in sandals. Surprised that Sorel has come on so strong, after being mostly a winter boot brand!
I recently did a big clear out of my sandal collection. I donated a half dozen pairs that just weren’t working for me. I also had some that were getting ragged around the edges.
Only when I was done with that, did I line up all of the remaining Sandals to see where I had gaps.
I ended up buying the Dansko Reece. https://dansko.com/products/reece-black-waxy-burnished?_pos=2&_sid=b9ee9c33c&_ss=r
I tried on every other black, flat, minimal sandal I could find. These ones are perfect for me. I haven’t worn Dansko in years, so was surprised with how non clunky they were! The leather straps and footbed are buttery smooth.
I also bought a pair of Dolce Vita slides in my skin tone. Easy and minimal, pretty comfy for me. Very reasonably priced.
I’m 5’8”, so rarely looking for a boost. I do, however have those Mephisto wedges, based on your long ago recommendation. I have them in soft gold. Comfortable and dressy. Great to walk in!

  9. Highly recommend Revere’s Geneva if you need a closed back sandal. It also has two adjustable straps and comes with extensions. Comfortable, supportive and attractive.

  10. I’ve got a Birkenstock dupe that’s a real bargain – the Gracie by White Mountain. This sandal is cheap! It’s real leather! Its got that molded cork footbed and even has that ridge to support your toes. I walk comfortably back and forth to work in them. It’s a mile each way. I probably wouldn’t wear them for long hikes. I wear them with casual pants, think cargos, jeans… I almost broke an ankle just trying on wedges in the store!
