Talbots Test Drive

The new fall merchandise has begun arriving in Talbots stores, and une femme had the opportunity over the weekend to try a couple of things, and see some others up close.
First, the jacket above. It’s gorgeous. The fabric is more like a velvet than faux fur, and the buttons are stubstantial and seem to be well attached.   The lining is black satin, and the pockets are well placed.  It’s not yet available online, but when it is, be warned:  it runs VERY large.  Two sizes large.  I normally wear a 10 Petite, which the Sales Associate had set aside for me, and when I slipped it on was absolutely swimming in it.  The 6 petite was still roomy, but a much better fit.  Still, I’m probably going to take a pass on this one, as I think the print is just a bit too large for me.  But if you’re looking for something that exemplifies mid-century glamour, do give it a try, and don’t wait to long.  Apparently it’s flying out the door.

I haven’t yet given up on finding some boyfriend jeans that work for my proportions, so had high hopes for these.  The Fabric?  Fabulous!  The Fit?  Phenomenal!  But then I caught a rear view, and ruh roh!  The dreaded Postage Stamp Pockets!  Size 0 rear pockets on a size 10 fanny spoiled an otherwise perfect jean.

As I had le petit monsieur in tow, my window of opportunity to try things on closed quickly, so I made a quick pass through the store, and took some mental notes.

The leather on this bomber jacket is very soft, and the details look good.  The color is a gorgeous light caramel, perfect for fall but classic.

This smaller bag is really quite lovely and has a luxe look.
Another woman was trying on this tweed jacket, and the cut, fabric and details looked to be of very good quality.  Best of the Chanel-esque jackets at a lower price point that I’ve seen yet.
Some of their jewelry pieces are quite attractive.  Costume, yes, but good costume, substantial and nicely made.

The link and clear bead necklace above doesn’t look like much in the picture, but in person has much more charm.

There was another black satchel with tassels on the front that I liked quite a bit, but it doesn’t seem to be available online yet. I’ll post it once it shows up.  They have several styles of bags and shoes in a faux croc finish, which frankly I thought looked cheap.

Bottom line, the leopard coat is definitely the winner so far, and if you’re interested, call a store near you or keep a close eye on the website. My guess is this one won’t be available for long.

  1. Wow! The little guy did well letting you check out even that much! And you did very well giving us such a great preview. Fall is always such a hard time for the pocketbook — the clothes are so very tempting. I love that leopard coat, but having picked up one last winter (by a Canadian company, Louben, bracelet sleeves, a bit of swing, wool), I’m a bit worried that they’ll be taking over to the point that I’ll have to put mine away for a few years for fear of disappearing in a jungle of cats! 😉
Meanwhile, though, I did some shopping damage this weekend that should keep me out of the shops for a while, so I’ll enjoy vicariously visiting them through you.

  2. Thanks for doing a little snooping for us, Pseu! Interesting point on the sizing of the jacket — I’m finding that things are a bit wonky in the stores I frequent, too.

I just bought a sort of modern sweater set at j.jill (quick, before they’re sold out and on backorder until next summer) and I found that I needed to order an XL petite.

At size 18, 5’6″ (1m65 for you metric folks), that’s a first for me. But the sleeves on the “straight” size came down to my fingertips, and the shoulders were droopy. Not to mention that the hem was way past my hips. It looked awful!

Not everything at j.jill is offered in petites, but a lot of things are, and I was pleased to have the option in this case. Without it, I’d have had to do without.

  3. If anyone was capable of convincing me to go to Talbots it would be Linda Evangelista. But even she hasn’t persuaded me. Do love the ads.

  4. The velvety critter coat is lovely, especially the lighter stripe down the centre. I don’t like Talbot’s at all, although I do have a brown quilted jacket with a black faux fur collar that my mother-in-law gave me. It’s really comfortable and great to wear when I go sea glass hunting. I find their cut is way too large for me. Even the smaller sizes are way too big in the thigh and hip. (So perhaps the upper half suits Talbot’s better than the lower half. lol…) Lovely post as always. R xox

  5. Deja, I´m so relieved that you were able to ” hold your horses ” this time. Smaller prints look nicer on you petites. I have never seen a Talbot´s article myself, but oddly the name rings my bells. I know, we all know, that as season changes, there is an awful need to toss away older clothes and buy something new. At least I do. I can no longer shop my own closet, as I have sold so much, and I´m into a minimal wardrobe, as if you did not know it by now. But-have you thought of shopping your´s? Maybe in wait for “the perfect outfit” it could be possible? Thank you for your review.

  6. Don’t laugh–but ever since you posted that pic of Linda E in the leopard jacket–I imagined the picture with my face superimposed on Linda’s. Definitely not as glamorous. I’d be afraid of getting the leopard–surely, I would run into a few people wearing the same.

I love all your choices, I must say.

I think the smaller bags will make a comeback. My daughter just made off with all the old rectangular Dooney’s that my mother handed down to me (and that I never used). From the 80s? 90s?

I can just see your little guy sitting on one of those chairs in the “men’s section” at Talbots. I guess he’d be bored with the reading material they have there.

  7. I think that Talbot’s is going to be my JCrew this fall. And I used to avoid Talbot’s like the plague.

  8. Love that coat, but it would no doubt swamp me, both the print size and the sizing … That leather jacket is exactly the colour of one I bought a couple of months ago and I have worn it non-stop – very flattering to anyone who wears warmer colours! Every time I contemplate a Chanel-style jacket some little voice in my head says that it has to be real or not at all. Odd, because I don’t normally subscribe to that sort of fashion snobbery.

  9. Autumn always makes me want to bin everything and start all over again. I love the Talbot’s lookbook, I really want an overhaul, at 46 I’m tired of dressing like a trendy teenager bt I’m not quite sure where to head from here.

  10. Last winter I was looking at a blog with a photo of a fashion-blogger get-together in New York and three of the eight or nine gals had animal skin coats on.

Isn’t the idea not to look like everyone else?

I’ve known women over the years who had this kind of print in their wardrobe, always. It’s their style and totally goes with their entire way of presenting themselves. It’s a bit arty, vintage, it’s someone who puts these things on and doesn’t look in the mirror and wonder if it’s all a bit much.

I think if you’re the type who really lives these prints you probably already own an animal skin coat. This season would be a good time to dig that coat out or maybe replace it with a new one.

If you aren’t then a little splash -shoes, bag, top- might be fresh but don’t go whole out for a coat.

  11. That was so fabulous! I really love the jacket. I imagine myself wearing that kind of jacket too and I can’t help it…I’m really craving for it.
