"Tightlining"
This video best demonstrates the eyelining technique I use. I recommend curling lashes first though. This also works with a very soft eyeliner pencil. Pencils I currently like are MAC eye Kohl “Prunella,” Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Cassis, or shu uemura drawing pencil in khaki.
I’m going to give this a try with a waterproof gel, as in the video.

That looks painful. Especially the way the guys hand was trembling while curling the eyelashes. For me, it’s not worth risking poking my eye to look perfectly pretty.
He makes this look easy…I wear glasses and have difficulty seeing what i am doing and recently purchased a magnification mirror…I’ll wait to see how you manage with your video!

Great video, it’s really quite easy. I use Laura Mercier Caviar with the flat brush like he had. I dampen it some. I think the Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner would probably work well too.
Anonymous – I don’t find it uncomfortable at all, and I’m pretty squeamish around my eyes. But everyone has their own comfort zone, for sure.
hostess – my vision isn’t great, but I get up pretty close to the mirror and do fine.
Tiffany – did you try with a pencil, or with gel? I remember in the 80’s when it was the thing to apply liner to the inside edge of the lids and people were getting eye infections from that. My eyes tend to be sensitive too, but this one doesn’t bother me.

Adrienne, be sure to report back. I wear contacts too, and that’s the same concern that I have.
I have used this technique for many years but recently started wearing contacts. They started to cause itching and burning as the liner does melt a little into the eye as the day progresses. I now use Maybelline’s waterproof liquid hard-end liner to dot between the lashes from face on or above. The liner applicator has a teeny point that is ideal for this. The effect is the same – density at the base of the lashes – but the liner doesn’t enter the eye.
No kidding about a magnifying mirror “helping”! I’m liking the soft kohl line, but heavier than his model’s is more my style. The mascara wiggle is another great tip; and then, give them a comb with a lash brush to make sure no clumps. I’m losing my lash thickness, and vanity makes me mourn this loss more than my waistline.
I use this technique and it becomes easier with practice. The video was great reinforcement, so thank you. Always love your tips.

I think I will try this technique. I like the idea of not looking like I am wearing lots of makeup – especially about the eye area. My one concern is that the eye liner would bother my contact lenses being that the application is so close to the actual eye.
There’s only way to find out!
Reporting back – I love the effect, but I found the application almost unbearably ticklish! Am I weird? Also, I’m prone to meibomianitis so I’m suspecting my ophthalmologist won’t approve …
Beau’s excellent YouTube videos are some of the few I watch– he’s really good! And Anonymous, it’s not painful in the least.
I don’t think he shows a fair before/after comparison: you can’t tell how much of the effect is from the mascara as opposed to the eyelining technique. I’d rather see lined/unlined without mascara and then with, then I’d know whether this was worth the trouble. I did try it once, but without a lot of success. I think it may be a problem for contact lens wearers.

I gave this technique a try this morning — it was pretty easy and I really like the results! I’m sure it’ll look even better with a little more practice. Thanks for the tip and video. I’d never even heard of tightlining before.

amazing results! it does look very natural. yesterday after your post, i tried my version of this technique using chanel’s pencil waterproof liner and no brush. it worked ok, but this video was just what i needed to see! (i’ll try w/ a gel liner and brush next time.)

at the bottom! I would have done it other way round, thought on top of the lashline, but close to the lashes. However, I am glad you posted this video, because I had NO clue! 🙂
About curling: everyone can develop a good hand on that in a short time. Now I can even talk with Mr Paula while curling my lashes. hehe.
If you go for a gel eyelinder: please give Bobby Brown a try. The colour range is huge and the lasting power like no other. A good brush is essential.

I tried it today, with the great wonderful Bobby Brown gel eyeliner in black (wonder how I will remove it tonight) only to find there where I should stipple on the eyelinder, is my “upper waterline”. There was no space between the lashes and the lid, only the upper waterline.
hm hmmm. Due to the lacking place where to put it, I switched to the upper part, above the lashes, where lets say 98% of the women place the eyelinder. 🙂
