Trending Blue Shades for Your Fall Wardrobe
While the predominant colors in fall collections often lean toward shades of brown, olive, burgundy, russet reds, and various gourd oranges, I’m seeing a lot of really good blues this season, with something for every seasonal palette.
Blue can be a versatile color that’s easy to wear year-round. It combines well with navy, and most other neutrals. Choosing the best blues for your palette will insure that they coordinate seamlessly with the rest of your wardrobe. And make you look your best! So I’ve included seasonal color palette recommendations for each.
Since we’re heading into sweater and jacket season, I’m featuring those styles, but you’ll also find many of these colors in tees, blouses, pants.
Wear-now-wear-later blues
Talbot’s Knit Sweater Jacket – $129
I’ll start off with something for you Winters, since I know you often have a hard time finding your colors this time of year.
This good looking and wool-free sweater jacket is available in Misses, Petite, Plus, and Plus Petite sizes.
J.Crew Classic Cashmere Crewneck – $128
This color is called Blue Martini, and will really brighten up your cool weather outfits! Another good blue for many of you Winters, it’s available in sizes XX-Small to 3X.
(This is just one of over a dozen lovely colors offered in this style…there’s something for everyone.)
Madewell Merino Boyfriend Cardigan – $128
Cobalt blue is another one that most Winters can really rock. This relaxed cardigan is available in sizes XX-Small to X-Large and Plus.
Caslon Puff Sleeve Cotton Blend Sweater – $69.50
Summers, I often hear you mention a lack of color options this time of year, but with various shades of lilac and light blue on trend, you’ll have more choices this season. I call this color “Periwinkle.” What would you call it? Sizes XX-Small to XX-Large.
Talbot’s Merino Wool Polo Sweater – $99.50
There are a few teal and light teal colors that can be worn by multiple seasons. In the Summer palette, this would be called “Duck Egg,” but it’s also close enough to Spring’s “Aqua” that many of us can wear it as well.
In Misses, Petite, Plus, and Plus Petite sizes. (I love that it’s 100% merino wool, a great choice for travel!)
Loft Textured Stitch Henley Pullover – $49.99
Autumns, here’s your Kingfisher! This one is also wool-free, and available in sizes XS-XL.
Eileen Fisher Ponte Knit Blazer – $278
And this “Deep Adriatic” color is your Autumn “Marine Navy!” This (washable) blazer could be a good travel piece, and is available in sizes XXS to 3X and Petites.
There are several pieces in this color in the current EF collection, so if you’ve been searching for your navy, do take a look!
Talbot’s Kate Cardigan – $129
Another one that’s quite close to Autumn “Kingfisher.” This cute textured cardigan is available in Misses, Petite, Plus, and Plus Petite sizes.
Loft V-Neck Cashmere Sweater – $120
Springs, on my monitor this looks like a close match for our “Aqua.” In Regular and Petite sizes.
In fall and winter, bright blues like these can really lift darker outfits, as well as your mood. Which color blue is your favorite to wear?

Love love teal Leaving for Portugal tomorrow with a travel wardrobe built around black, navy and teal.
Susan these are fabulous! Thank you so much for finding these beautiful blues for us. I think it’s about time for me to head down to the Mill Valley EILEEN FISHER and try on some of these pieces. I love her fabrics and her Renew program. I like the Loft sweater in theory but don’t like acrylic fabrics but if you run across any merino wool or even cashmere sweaters in those colors please let us know!
Susan, I really appreciate you labeling the sweaters according to season. I have looked at most of these options and bought only one, the Talbots Royal Blue zip. As a winter, I know it is one of my best colors and one that is not offered very often. Some of the other blues are pretty, but aren’t right for me. Your season labels has confirmed my thinking about what will look great on me without having to order and then later return.
Thank you for your continued insights.
Love that teal Talbot’s cardigan.
I just read an interesting article on how humans perceive hues of blue and green. There are striking differences between individuals, and this post is a great example, in that many of the items are what I call green. Here’s the article and a simple test you can take:
https://www.theguardian.com/wellness/2024/sep/16/blue-green-viral-test-color-perception
This is fascinating, thank you for the link!
Interesting test on the blue/green boundary. Part of the reason for the differences among people might be cataracts – after my surgery suddenly everything looked much bluer. Apparently that’s typical.
Having my colors done has really helped me understand what blues to wear and what to avoid. I’ve always gravitated towards blue, but before my analysis, I wondered why I never reached for some of my blue clothes. Now I know! Periwinkle is one of my best colors.
I always look forward to your comments for Winters.
Wow, I love that Kingfisher color so much!
And it’s one of your best! 😉
Thank you for this! A summer season sweater is now on its way to me :). I do have a favor to ask – I’m searching for a moderately priced summer brown/dark taupe crossbody purse and shoes (loafers? boots?) and have not found any cool enough. If you run across any in your perusing, please post!! Thank you!
I love blue of nearly every shade, but as a Winter, many greenish blues, like teal and some green-leaning turquoise shades, are no friend to my coloring, making me look sallow and unhealthy. Royal blue, however, like the Madewell and Talbot’s sweaters you show, is great. I appreciate you including them.
I love your posts when you show us what is best for each season! Thank you.
Hi Susan, I love that you show which blue works for which season. You posted some great selections for Autumns like me. I like that dark teal from Talbots. I also love that deep adriatic from EF but their clothes are a bit too much for my budget.
Wishing you a peaceful Rosh Hashanah and a wonderful new year. As another recent widow, I know that the first holiday is particularly tough.
Thank you Laura. L’shana tovah!
Love the blues! I’m some type of summer but would look good in the cobalt, duck egg/aqua, and kingfisher (close to teal blue). Periwinkle is ok; I need a little more depth with this color.
