NYDJ “Ally” Ponte Knit Pants (5-pocket)

OK, these are definitely Best in Breed (Knit Slim Pants) and may even be a contender for Best in Show.

On a whim, I tried these on and WOW. The fabric is substantial and totally matte (none of that sheen sometimes seen in knit fabrics), the cut is almost perfection (the waist could be just a teeny bit lower but otherwise the most flattering knit pants I’ve found to date), and they make any lumpity-bumpity bits just vanish. Get a size smaller than your regular size. That was the recommendation of the Sales Associate and she was right.

  1. Denim is not always the most flattering fabric for mature women and I found, after not wearing jeans for 20 years and then going back, I look more polished in knits- wool, rayon or jersey.

  2. To answer Hostess’ question, I think I have these — got them in my small city not too far up the road from hers. I’d have to check the label for the exact model but 5-pocket (i.e. jean-look) black ponte-knit slim NYDJ pant, staple of my wardrobe. My only complaint is that I can only get two days, max, wear out of them before the knees bag — my Citizens dark denim stretch Ingrids do way better than that and thus are better for travel. I’ll be curious to see if you find that as well, Pseu — and as I say, I’m not positive mine are the same model. It does give me pause when packing, though, as they’re pretty much deadweight after that second day.

  3. Back to say I’ve checked the label on mine and they’re not the ‘Ally’ — appears the fabric is v. similar, though, and I’ll be curious to see what you find about how much wear you can get before you need to wash in order to de-bag the knees. Despite that minor complaint, though, these are a great staple. I’m going to look for this model now.

  4. Mater, why not just dip the legs into a sink full of water, squeeze out and hang to dry? I would think they would dry nicely, being a knit fabric.

Anyway, they look great, and I like the fabric, it’s a nice change from denim.

  5. If I were a skinny pant girl, which I am not, those would definitely be on my list….they look great in that picture.

  6. Thanks for sharing this find! I’m looking for a pair of pants in this style for the end of summer (when I should be at my final weight). I think the line of them is so chic!

  7. Rita, that’s a great (and so simple, I should have thought of it) idea. I’m going to try that before our upcoming trip — they’re thick enough that they’d probably take a day or two to dry, but still they’re otherwise so great that it would be worth it.

  8. I understand Duchesse’s comment that women our age look more polished in nice slacks (wool, silk, etc) than in denim. I totally agree, but find myself going to denim for many activities–at our farm, with our grandchildren, around the house. I’m alway on the lookout for jeans that are long enough.

These NYDJ ponte knit seem only to be carried in the petite size by Nordstrom’s? I have no idea if they would flatter me or not. Would love to try them on.

  9. I tried these, even got as far as bringing them home with me, but I couldn’t love the rise — it was just too high for me — so back they went.

Instead, I’m going to take advantage of Talbots’ $20 off all pants to get myself a pair of black bi-stretch britches in ankle cut for spring. I’ve got bi-stretch in grey, bootcut, and they fit like they were made for me. (And no baggy knees, which are a total pain when you’re traveling.)

Mater, if the fabric is heavy, I’d suggest rolling the wet trouser legs in a towel and squeezing, as with a sweater. It should take out more water, and cause fewer wrinkles. Just a thought…

  10. I have their jeans and LOVE them – I may have to now try the pants. Thank you for the review!

  11. frugalscholar – I had to go try the Chico’s too in that grey color with the price being so low, but didn’t love them. The black are more flattering.

Kalee – right now Nordstrom only seems to be carrying them in Petite sizes. But either the NYDJ website or maybe even amazon.com should probably have them at some point.

Duchesse – I still do love my denim, but these are a nice alternative for work and travel.

LuxeBytes – I picked these up at Nordstrom. Right now the website only offers in Petite, but I think the stores have in regular sizes too.

hostess – I see materfamilias answered your question below. I think you’d like these.

materfamilias – after reading your comment this morning, I decided to wear them for a second day to work. I did notice a *slight* bit of bagging at the knee, but they also aren’t snug on my lower leg, so it was something I’d be able to live with. I washed them tonight and am hanging to dry a) to see how long they take to dry and b) if they regain their shape. Will let you know.

Rita – I think these are really a nice alternative to black or dark denim!

Katriona – well, this skinny pant girl *really* loves them! 😀

Allie – I think you’ll like these, and they’re very comfortable too!

  12. Tiffany – for me, they’re a definite wardrobe essential. As mentioned above, I’ve worn them two days in a row and could wear them all week and create as many different looks.

That’s Not My Age – thanks, and yes I hope so!

Fabulous Never Better – and those high waisted, wide legged pants look terrible on me! 🙂 I’m sure the fashion pendulum will swing that way soon, and you’ll have a multitude of choices.

Susan – I know Neiman’s carries this brand online too, you might try calling them to see if they have in the store. Here in LA, denim is still de rigeur but it’s good to have options.

Rubiataonta – I could live with the rise because I never tuck. I gave up on Talbot’s for pants a while back because their cuts didn’t work for me. Glad you have a “go-to” brand!

  13. My search continues – NYDJ (or what we can get of it here) doesn’t go to my size, and it sounds like they might be slightly too high in the rise for me. But you’ve reminded me that I need to keep looking, as pants like that are a wardrobe essential.

  14. I would love to be able to wear these, but they turn my lamb chops into pork chops. I’m much happier to see this 1970s reunion of higher waist and fuller, palazzo-style leg! So far, the only ones I can find are by Dries Van Noten and are somewhat expensive; any tips on others?
    Many thanks!

  15. i agree! i picked up a pair for one of my clients…and she fought me on them…till she put them on…then i get a call saying she needs another pair…because that is all she is wearing…
