Une femme recommends: Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

NYDJ Marilyn Stretch Twill Jeans (Petite)

Now that the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is open to all, I thought I’d list some of my suggested picks. I must first say in comparison to prior years, I thought the pickings were VERY slim (in every department but especially in Petites, ugh). Usually I’ll see several pieces right off that I’m ready to jump on as soon as they are available online, but this year there were only a couple that made my shopping cart the first day. The sanded twill jeans above were one of the items. The color is actually a little bit cooler than it appears in the picture, more tobacco than “caramel.” But these will be a great season-spanning neutral.

Eileen Fisher Merino Wool Zip Cardigan

Though it may be approaching painful for some of us to even think about sweaters and jackets right now due to various heat waves (while our friends in Great Britain and parts of Northern Europe have been soggy and shivering), in a few short months we’ll all be glad to have them. I actually haven’t seen this Eileen Fisher sweater up close yet as my local Nordstrom didn’t stock it, but I do like the shaping and zip closure. It’s available in several colors in Misses sizes and three in Petites. I could envision this as a jacket alternative for the office and a versatile travel piece, and have ordered it in Charcoal. Will report back once I’ve received.

Eileen Fisher slim ponte knit pants

I’m a big fan of EF ponte knit pants, and have rarely seen them go on sale. I haven’t ordered these as mine from last year are still in good shape, but if you’ve been considering a pair and hesitated because of the price, now’s your chance.

Cole Haan leather jacket (Petite)

I didn’t find this online in Misses, only Petites, but it may be available in stores. I tried on but didn’t purchase this one as I’m well set for leather jackets, but if you’re looking for a very nicely made and well-cut option without a lot of frippery or trendy styling, this one is well worth considering. The leather…Like Buttah™. Also available in Black.

NYDJ Jade Leggings

These NYDJ leggings were one of the other items that I purchased on the spot. Not really a “legging” as I’m used to thinking of them, these are more like a skinny twill jean that’s VERY stretchy, comfortable and flattering. I’m already mentally adding these to my next travel capsule. They’re a very dark solid navy, and the fabric has a velvety finish. These could easily dress up for a nice dinner, as well as tuck into a pair of knee boots for an afternoon stroll through Jardin de Luxembourg.

And speaking of boots…

Frye Melissa Trapunto boots

I need another pair of boots like a hole in the head, but these are still tempting me. The cognac “saddle” color is so gorgeous, and I love the simple styling that isn’t too “cowboy” or literal Equestrian. The leather has a “veiny” look; what do you think of these?

Cole Haan Jodphur boot

Though I’m not the biggest fan of the elastic goring on the side, the color of these suede boots is stunning (and right on trend for fall). I’m picturing these with a slightly longer, fuller skirt, kicking up some autumn leaves… If you’re wanting to get beyond basic black boots, these are contenders.

Sam Edelman bootie

If your wardrobe needs a little shot of leopard, you could do worse than these booties from Sam Edelman.

Alexis Bittar Tartan bracelets

And finally, I thought these Alexis Bittar “Tartan” hinged bracelets were fun and unusual.

Have you shopped the sale? Find anything amazing?

  1. Very disappointed in the plus size offerings. There were two Lafayette 148 jackets I might have considered, but they were sold out in my size. I’ll wait and see if there are returns – sometimes I get lucky there. Otherwise, just replacing a few bras.

  2. The Mcginn jacket is a beautiful and fun and will go with everything from jeans to a pencil skirt. The Michael Kors purse is expensive but an absolutely gorgeous bag. Rachel Zoe boots are “to die” for. The TC control tops for 39 are something every woman needs and can make everything you wear look so much better, no matter the season. I think the Nordstrom sale this year is amazing!

  3. Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year was one their best! Great pieces in every department chosen for this Fall’s trends! Your choices look very nice, but if near a store I’d really reccommend going in as this is a good opportunity.

    1. Anonymous, I did go to our local store but found the selections very limited. Even at my same store, they seemed to have fewer styles offered than in past years.

    2. I agree with you, Pseu. I bought only a Clarisonic, a bra, and some underwear. If I had seen the Bittar bracelets, I would have been tempted. The clothes and shoes didn’t inspire me this time.

  4. I’m loving the EF cardi you chose, and the warm green would be a great color for my wardrobe (but will I ever wear a sweater again? : >) And the EF pants also look like a terrific hardworking addition – and washable, I love that. Great picks, Une Femme, thank you.

  5. Good stuff! I checked out the Neiman Marcus designer sale at one of their stores. If you’re in need of a little black dress, head on over. There were also a number of red ones; a Stella McCartney one for under $200 was particularly noteworthy. Thanks.

  6. I found less this year than ever before too.
The NYDJ Marilyn stretch jean will go in my bag and also the EF cardigan. Great color.
I like the Cole Haan boots but the Frye Boots remind me of high school way too much to go there.
I agree, petites was a big disappointment. Their buyers are out to lunch for that department.
Thanks for the Alexis Bittar bracelets!! They’re really fun. He always designs interesting shapes…but I love the Tartan to shake things up a bit!!
    Thanks for the “finds”.

  7. I’m not much of a fan of the anniversary sale–but this year I found nearly half price on my favorite wardrobe basic–the MAJESTIC t shirts; got one long sleeve jewel neck, one black turtleneck. They really, really last, wash beautifully; I usually get 3-4 years of constant wear out of mine.

  8. I like the Cole Haan boots, but not crazy about the Frye boots. Beautiful cognac color, but don’t like the veiny pattern or the way the toe goes up. I love charcoal sweaters – great choice.

  9. do you have any advice on the fit of the EF ponte knit pants? I’m in between petite and regular and probably in between small and medium as well…

    1. angela, my suggestion would be to order multiple sizes and return the ones that don’t fit. Nordstrom has a liberal return policy. If you’re not comfortable with that, I’d order the regular, as it’s easier to get pants hemmed than let them out.

  10. I love the EF ponte knit pants and I really want to find a great leather jacket..love the cognac colors! Nice picks!!

  11. Fully agree that the petite pickings were less than optimal this year. Thanks for the recommendation on the NYDJ jeans and leggings–snagged those on line. Also pulled the trigger on Stuart Weitzman boots and the Cole Haan–let’s see which fit best. Got into more trouble with the Cole Haan leather jacket in that yummy Amber color and the McGinn jacket. Oh you temptresses…Lots of trouble for this billing cycle. These are great basics–that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

  12. Went to check out my local store today. I was in the market for a nice leather jacket, not a moto style, but dressier. Did not find the Cole Haan, and there were few choices, but there was a nice black Ellen Tracy. Now Ellen Tracy is one of those labels, like Dana Buchman, that used to be so gorgeous, but in recent years have gone way downmarket. But this jacket is a nice soft leather, in a longer length, with a zip front, a stand-up collar, and quilted detail at the shoulders and waist. So I got it!

I didn’t really look for anything else, since that was enough to spend for one day!

  13. The only thing that I bought and kept were black suede Sam Edelman pumps. Very pretty and comfortable for the heel hight because of the cushioned platform. I bought two pair as black, suede pumps are staples for me.

  14. Thanks for the heads up re the sale – I’ll have to check it out this weekend (if there’s anything good left). I quickly looked on line to see if my favorite Ficcare brand hair clips they carry were on sale, but doesn’t look like it. I do think those marbled boots would be cute on you – Jen

  15. Love the nydj jeggings–would indeed look perfect in Paris.

By the way, I just returned from almost 6 weeks in France. I took a non-descript cashmere hoody–per your recommendation–and used it all the time, including as pajamas.

  16. I like the Nordstrom’s website and sale! I’m focused on two basic colors this fall: brown and yellow. I purchased several things; now I hope they fit! The website really helps me stay focused on my wishlist by allowing me to select color, size, etc.-Theresa

  17. Luckily these are all out of reach for me ; ).
Good offers for those of you, who live in warm climates; over here we are already buying fall/ winter wear for full price (;.

  18. Just ordered the slim ponte knit pants and the leggings. I hope the size charts Nordstrom provided are correct as I have never ordered pants from Not Your Daughter’s Jeans. Eileen Fisher usually runs large so I purchased the smallest size possible. I REALLY want to THANK YOU for giving us the heads-up and previewing items that are so critical to a wardrobe.
    THANK YOU THANK YOU!

  19. Just wanted to say, I’m pretty sure I have that exact cole haan jacket–bought it a year ago on sale…and it is a wonderful jacket. great color, super soft leather and it’s shaped so nicely, it tapers in at waist so it’s very flattering when zipped. it even has inside pockets in the lining which can be handy. it’s lightweight which is good for me (in Texas). I have a black motorcycle jacket I love, but last winter, I found myself wearing that Cole Haan one even more often.

  20. the Nordstrom pickings were very slim in the Naples Fl. Store. I am a size 10 or a medium & the racks looked like they had been really picked throught.
