Weekend Roundup

Inspired by materfamilias‘ lovely post about her family history, I dug out this picture of grand-mere Lucille et moi. I’m not sure what we are looking at, but I know my love of gardens comes from her.

Materfamilias also tagged me for a meme this week, which I’m working on, vraiment! (Our sudden decision to go to Paris in October and the resulting urgency about finding accommodations have sucked up almost all of my online time and mental energy this week.)

And…I’m also working up some thoughts about the concept of “Home,” inspired by the wonderful series of guest posts at La Belette Rouge on this topic. If you haven’t read these yet, go read now. They are touching and funny and insightful and thought-provoking.

Is anyone besides une femme finding retailers’ fall collections so far to be a bit….underwhelming?

  1. Great picture! You both look so happy. I am working on that meme from Mater as well and am finding it difficult to step back and attempt to be objective.

The fall shopping frontiers seem completely uninspiring which is such a shame really as I felt last year was so full of promise. There are things I need but nothing that inspires me to fill those needs.

  2. Overwhelming in a positive or negative way? I have been to the shops only twice this month and really; I now have all I need ( that´s what I tell my hb all the time ). Something new comes in the shops every single day. I can´t take it much longer. I should be on a shopping ban, I really should. Starting September, right 😉 A cute picture of you two.

  3. Sorry, I read the word wrong, underwhelming, hmm.. It depends where you shop. And no, I have had a look at the first ones and am satisfied with my purchases: a dress, a jacket, a coat, a pair of shoes and a knit.

  4. How excting that you’re going to Paris! It seems as though everyone I know is going in October — I may have to throw budget-caution to the wind and hop on a plane. Or die green with envy.

    Happy planning!

  5. Hello,

I’ve been visiting you for months without leaving a message telling you why I keep coming back. (You may have noticed on your sitemeter map.)

I love the way you love Paris and the way you delicately, intimately draw us into your life and make us want to know more. No mean trick.

Speaking of tricks: I think you might as well just move over here and teach Frenchwomen how to tie scarves. I cannot believe you can keep up that feature. I tried for a while to have “un idee du semaine” and gave up early on. It’s brilliant what you’re doing (and if you don’t mind my saying so, you have a great neck).

You are so right about the old photography. Maybe we should all — as if we had the time — write letters to the editors of fashion magazines and tell them to review their photographic history lessons with their art directors.

I’m excited for you for your up-coming trip to Paris. October is gorgeous here I think. How many times have you been here and how long are you staying?

You’re up on my “roll” I can no longer resist. . .

    Best regards,
    Tish

  6. Tish – Wow!! I can’t begin to tell you how lovely it was to read your comment first thing this morning. Mille mercis!

I just discovered your blog a couple of weeks ago, and love it! I’ve added you to my blogroll as well.

We’re arriving the morning of 11-Oct, and will be leaving early on 18-Oct. Other than a day trip to Reims on Tuesday, 13-Oct, we’ll be in town all week. If you’d like to meet for a coffee or lunch, I’d be delighted! We’re staying in an apartment very near the Pompidou, so we can get to anyplce in town quite easily. Thank you again for your lovely comment.

  7. WendyB – and you’ll look fantastic no matter the season!

lagatta – merci. She’s actually in a housecoat or robe, I think, in that picture. I’m going to post some other pictures when she’s a bit more dressed. She was quite stylish.

materfamilias – it’s funny, when I first saw that picture I didn’t recognize myself, assumed it was my younger sister until I looked at the notation on back.

  8. metscan – this is usually the time of year when I restock and update my wardrobe, but until I saw Talbot’s look book (see today’s post) hadn’t seen much of anything inspiring.

Mardel – I’m finally gaining traction on the meme. Should be up in a day or so. 🙂

There’s really nothing I *need*, though I would like to update my jackets.

  9. vicki archer – merci! Hope you are having a lovely weekend as well.

Polly-Vous – there are some good deals out there now if you are flexible with your travel dates. We’re going on Air Tahiti Nui, as they are one of the very few offering non-stop flights from LA.
