What I Wore (To The Grocery Store) 🛍

Susan B. wears a striped tee, straw hat, white jeans and pearl jewelry. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Why not…put together a “lewk” to roam around the produce section? 😆🥑🥬🥒🍉🍐 Anything to make grocery shopping a little more fun…

I love this little striped tee, and have been wearing it regularly. The jeans are from last year, and still a favorite as they’re a soft white, not stark. They’re no longer available but these are similar.

When it’s too warm to wear your favorite silk scarves around the neck, you can always add one to a hat. This polka dot silk square is one of the vintage scarves I inherited from my Grandmother. It’s the perfect size to use as a hat band!

This pearl and gold chain necklace is from the new French Kande Palais Royale collection, and is already a favorite. It’s so easy to wear! I’ve doubled it here, but you can also wear it long on its own or layered with other necklaces. FK pieces are all made to order in their Southern California studio, and the materials are sourced in the USA too.

But I get that these pieces are not in everyone’s budget, so here are a few more budget-friendly options with a similar look.

In other news…

Our rescue dog Gigi is settling in quite nicely. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

Gigi is settling in quite nicely and we absolutely adore her! She seems to be getting more relaxed, and her playful side is coming out. Tomorrow she has a check-up at the vet, and if she gets the all-clear, she’ll get a bath and trim.

As it turned out, Jeune Homme did not get re-tested last week. (He tested positive for Covid-19 at the end of July.) He’s still asymptomatic, and is scheduled for a re-test either later this week or early next week. We’re hopeful for a negative test so we’ll be able to visit with him again.

How’s your week going?

  1. I love the idea of the scarf as a hat band. How wonderful that you have this vintage piece and I’m amazed at how well the color matches! It makes for a really nice pulled-together look.

      1. You are looking more and more lovely. Such great colors and also such fun – polka dots and stripes are my favorite. Thanks for a great blog.

  2. I have a jumpsuit with a lots of pockets I like to wear to the grocery store.
I feel a bit like a character out of Ghostbusters in it! Conditions have improved here slightly, the hot bar at Whole Foods has reopened and they’ve taken the one-way signs off the aisles. As Joni said eons ago, you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.

These CVOID tests can be crazy. Our County is doing tons of testing and week before last dumped their lab and announced if you’d been tested you needed to be re-tested b/c of poor practices. It’s good your son wasn’t feeling bad, bad that he’s been isolated from you -I’m sure that’s not good for him. I hope you can get in to see him soon. It sounds like it will be awhile before he gets a chance to meet your new Gigi.

    1. Thanks, Rose. A jumpsuit with a lot of pockets sounds like a very practical choice! Just remember not to cross the streams, LOL!

  3. That yellow is certainly your color-happy!The Palais brand is new to me thanks for posting. Always love learning about new things, esp. Anything remotely French!
Everything else is so far so good! Stay safe!

  4. Love the hat with scarf! Great pic, this color really suits you. You dog is close in color, to butterscotch, and matches your new colors, how fun!

  5. Love the color, inspired by you I bought a top that is mustard color. I love it. Glad the pup is settling in!

  6. Fun look for the groceries. Why not, we have to have some fun with the small things lately. I try to do the same, makeup on the eyes with the mask, and earrings that don’t catch and a cheery outfit. The colour of your scarf is perfect with the glasses and top. That shot of Gigi makes me want to kiss that cute nose.

    1. Thanks, Diane! To me, getting dressed is an act of self-care, and I think we all could use a little of that now.

    1. I can’t speak for Susan, but when attaching a scarf or ribbon to my straw hat, I’ve used an old stickpin to attach it in the back of the hat. It works well and looks polished.

    2. Hi Catherine, there are a couple of options you might consider. One is using a safety pin from the inside, or even a brooch from the outside. The other is using some Hollywood tape between the fabric and hat. Link HERE.

  7. No doubt your mask was coordinating, too. lovely outfit. Since we have to get dressed anyway, why not do it with panache.

  8. I’m so glad to see you had a ‘look’ to go to the grocery; I had chosen a ‘look’ to go pick up my new glasses (in my newly discovered ‘colors’; they’re fabulous!), go to the grocery & mail a card. I thought I was going over the edge, however, I just wouldn’t tell anyone.
Gigi is precious! There is nothing better than have a sweet pet snuggle up to you. I don’t know what I would do if we didn’t have our ‘baby’ girl Charley, she’s fun & snuggly.

  9. You look fantastic in your “grocery store ensemble”! The guidelines necessary to keep us safe can start to drain us of good feelings. But you are letting your spirit shine through and inspiring us to keep lookin’ great. Gigi is precious.

    1. Thanks so much, Rondi! I think anything we can do to take care of ourselves at this point will help our resilience in the long-term.

  10. Sorry about your son. The testing is wildly inaccurate which makes things more confusing. Ok….2 questions….first…is your shirt tucked in and bloused over? Second…do you think Red Leopard can really do a color consult on the computer?? It’s seems pretty pricey for a virtual visit especially compared to an in person but I would like your sage advice. Thanks Susan…you are so cute!

    1. Hi Jan, the shirt is not tucked in. It’s a shorter cut, which works well for me. Second, my friend Karen did the online consult and was thrilled with it. And I think they NAILED it. You really want to be sure you have good natural light, and a variety of “drapes” (tee shirts or even towels will work).

  11. I’ll bet you never thought your featured travels would include a trip to the grocery store! It’s not a boulangerie, but it will have to do right now (like so much else.)

    1. Hi Lyn, yes, it’s really been a shift in perspective! After all of the shortages back in March and April, we’re just grateful to have quality food available.

  12. Great post. What can be better these days than dressing up cute for the groceries and getting a smile out of cute gigi!

  13. That goldenrod color looks so great on you! My mom has similar coloring and I was thinking of suggesting it to her. I was thinking the other day about your shift from a lot of black to color and how it really has made a difference in your photos. Would love to see side by side photo collages of you 2 years ago and you now!

    1. Thanks so much, Renee! I avoided wearing this color for so long because “conventional wisdom” was that no one looked good in mustardy yellows. How wrong that was!!

  14. A little off the current subject–Do you ever shop at Talbot’s? Their current catalog has lots of animal print items, which I know you like.

  15. Let’s get Gigi’s colors done??
I think a big hot pink bow?
Hope all’s well with your father in law !! So sorry to have to miss his visits!
I’m translating your cute ideas to a winter palette so wish me luck!

    1. Thanks! I’ll have to drape her with some of our tee shirts and see what works. I’m thinking she’s an Autumn 😉 It’s actually our son we’ve been waiting on results for, but yes, we are hopeful we’ll be able to see him soon.

  16. What a shame le jeune homme wasn’t tested. Hopefully it will be done soon and have a favourable result.
    Gigi is adorable.
And your grandmother’s scarf is exactly right with the hat, the shirt and the necklace. Nice combination.
    Greetje

    1. Thanks, Greetje. We think he might be getting re-tested today or tomorrow, hopefully will have answers soon.

  17. Hope your son tests negative soon so you can visit. The hardest part of this pandemic.
I hope to see lots of Gigi in upcoming posts. She is just the cutest!

    1. Thanks so much! We have our fingers crossed. I’m sure you’ll be seeing plenty of Gigi…she had such a great personality.

  18. Susan, I love this outfit and although my coloring is not same as yours, I can wear a golden yellow too. Your dog is super cute! The online stores have many choices for her too!
    Diane

    1. Thanks! I’ve learned that many colors can work with multiple “seasons” depending on where in the seasonal palette your best colors are.

  19. Wow, what a great look – and that deep yellow is a great color on you. I can see I am going to need to consider “upping my game” when going to the grocery! Gigi looks so darling, and like she adores whoever was taking her picture. I wish your son a speedy resolution to his testing and that the time passes quickly until you all can get together. It’s always a pleasure to read your posts!

  20. Such a cute look! Any recommendations for keeping those annoying small holes from developing on t-shirts?? I have a brand new tee that already has one. Ugh. Don’t put in dryer?

    1. Thanks, Alexandra! From that I understand, those holes are caused by friction from between the button on pants or jeans and other surfaces (like the edge of the counter or sink when washing dishes). I don’t know any way to prevent them totally, so I just try to be careful not to lean too hard against the counter. I’ve had both inexpensive and more expensive tees develop these holes, and it’s frustrating!

  21. Have always loved that mustard yellow color. It’s a classic and you look beautiful in it – VERY “Provence.” Hope your son is able to get tested again soon and glad to read that Gigi is adjusting so well. Can’t wait to see her in her new ‘do!

  22. I look jaundiced in mustard yellow, though I do have a pretty Provençal tablecloth in that colour. Today I’m wearing a cool green semi-boatneck 3/4 sleeve t-shirt in organic cotton. It is similar to forest green but a little brighter. One of my best colours and a change from reds and violets. Remember that such hues are practically neutrals in Montréal in summertime.

I love Gigi. Am looking forward to Jeune homme being able to meet her. She looks gentle and sweet. Wee black Livia sends kisses and purrs. (She was also a stray).
