Winter White - une femme d'un certain âge

Winter White

White on white

Brrrr! Need jacket!

These pictures were taken a few weeks ago, when we were still having some cool and blustery weather. (I know, I know! We don’t know from “winter” here.) I’ve been trying to find ways to work my white jeans into winter ensembles, and have been loving some of the winter white looks I’ve seen on blogs and pinterest. Though I love the pockets on this sweater…

White on white

I was on the fence about the overall look. (But then, who wears fisherman sweaters for figure flattery?) Le monsieur really liked the sweater, so I kept it.

Sweater: J.Crew // Jacket: Sandro, no longer available, similar // Scarf: J.Crew, similar // Jeans: NYDJ // Boots: Isabel Marant, similar color/style // Watch: Burberry.

White on white (plus army green)

Ahh, that’s a bit better!

So not quite a full-on winter white outfit, but I’ll give myself A For Effort!

Have you been wearing Winter White?

This color looks great on you — much more flattering than all the black you usually wear. The sweater looks nice but would be so much better if it was a few inches longer. It seems a bit short for your proportions.

I don’t really like white on white. The cream (not white) sweater is lovely, though I’ll always love black and lead-pipe grey!

  2. January 24, 2014 / 3:32 am

Beautiful…this looks so great on you! You have encouraged me to try it. Stay warm out there!

  3. January 24, 2014 / 3:51 am

Great outfit, where I always fall down on this is footwear, your boots are lovely but would last 2 weeks in our rain and sludgey streets.

White is so refreshing in winter. But are you sure you wouldn’t like some of our weather? Yesterday, our morning windchill was -40ºC — which is -40ºF! Right now, it’s a balmy -30ºC/-22ºF. (I’m in Central Ontario, Canada.)

I think you look great in black. Those of us with very light hair color sometimes have difficulty wearing the light colors as they blend in with our hair color. Also, I think the sweater is not unflattering. Yes, it’s a lot of bulk, but you look great in it.

I don’t have any winter white but have always admired the look!

We are having a blast of winter in Dallas. 19 degrees here overnight! Brrrrr..

I bought some white jeans that I’m planning to wear late Winter/early Spring. All my long underwear is dark so the jeans aren’t a possibility at the moment.

  8. January 24, 2014 / 4:57 am

This is beautiful and you look lovely

  9. January 24, 2014 / 5:30 am

This is a great outfit and I think you did white beautifully! The tone of the boots is right on and I like this paired with the olive jacket. Really nice with your light scarf. The metallic accent look so good with your hair. Think of me when you see the national weather temps, yesterday the temp was -10. The only way I in get pictures is to take 4-5 pictures and hop back in the car with the heat blasting!

I really love this on you. Great sweater, and I haven’t gotten the chance to wear my new fisherman knit winter white sweater yet, not even once. An exceptionally warm winter for us – but maybe you (and I) could try this with an off white top, and get a similar effect?

  11. January 24, 2014 / 6:10 am

I used to wear winter white but haven’t for years. I like your sweater with the white jeans. Perhaps when I lose more weight, I will try winter white again.

  12. January 24, 2014 / 6:19 am

You look great, from top to toe!
I cannot wear all white. I’m too much of a slob. And it makes me twitchy.
But I AM reminded that I was wearing white pants when I first met my boyfriend. They got red wine spilled on them (not by me) and that was that for the white pants. Better luck with the boyfriend — we just celebrated our 17th anniversary!

You and “That’s Not My Age” must be on the same wave length! I opened up my e-mail to find your two posts about white outfits/ white jeans this morning. Still wearing my toque and down coat here in Ottawa! But a girl can dream.

You look great, the sweater is lovely, the cable knit gives a vertical line and just the right texture for the weather. I’ve never worn this look, have always avoided white. Maybe I’ll re-consider and try some ivory this year.

It’s funny, but I am on the fence with white on white, too. I have tried it, but never ever left the house before changing something. It certainly never looked bad , but I think it looks “institutional” on me.

  16. January 24, 2014 / 7:11 am

Wow! You do that look really well! I mean, really! I like the all-over effect as you and I are rather short for chopping ourselves up with white as a contrasting garment. And I’m surprised how much I like that sweater on you — I’d thought it fell a bit too short for me but you rock that length!
Couldn’t do the light pants here. At all. They’d be mud-spattered on my first commute.

I love the look, Femme,! That jacket you bought in London is fab with whites. I’m inspired.

  18. January 24, 2014 / 7:33 am

Now THIS is how to do white in winter! I love the thought behind it – suede and a chunky knit, the scarf, it makes the white jeans look so perfect on a winter day. Gorgeous!

  19. January 24, 2014 / 7:46 am

I love white on white, and adore a fisherman’s sweater. I particularly like this with the jacket, column of color and all:). Suits your coloring really well, very glamorous, in a California way.

I think this look suits you and your coloring. You look incredibly healthy and tall! I love the last photo; the jacket pulls everything together.

Oh I think the sweater is a keeper too. You wear that shade well and I like the soft scarf. Your California climate begs for white jeans all year long. Enjoy your weekend.

  22. January 24, 2014 / 8:55 am

I really like your look, especially because of the different shades of white and cream which make it appropriate for winter.
Unfortunately I cannot wear it in our German winter weather, white trousers would look somehow strange.
But for you in California it is fabulous!

I have the fisherman’s sweater I bought on my first trip to England–oh, in 1972!
Last time I wore white, someone bumped into me and spilled coffee on me.

  24. January 24, 2014 / 9:53 am

I love this look on you. Perfect with your hair. Very fresh!

This reminds me of a look I saw in one of my ” secrets of chic Frenchwomen” books from the last few years that I have tried to replicate. Maybe is was Inez or her daughter(?)…sleek white/off-white jeans, the fisherman sweater, and a navy pea coat. Since the pea coat will never work here in Phoenix I do try the look with off white Talbot skinny cords and a Lands’ End fisherman (cotton). I like your version here and the scarf is a good accent to offset what could turn dowdy without accessories. I think I will wear it tonight to dinner at a local bistro. Thank you for your wonderful blog; I read you daily and intend to chime in this year.

Very pretty! Could not wear bottom half here (Montréal) as pants are immediately splattered with salt and gravel bits used to treat the roads and sidewalks- it’s inescapable all winter! And since this is industrial-strength materials, cleaning it out of pants is a bear. The most you see is a winter white jacket. In March a few women will brave off-white pants, but pale colour is not really wearable below the waist till the muddy spring has passed.

You look great in this outfit!

I think this cream looks lovely with your hair. I love the soft shades of cream and white on blondes. Bravo and the sweater is fabulous.

Love the sweater! You look great (as per usual).

  30. January 24, 2014 / 8:21 pm

Way to wear winter clothes and still look bright! I love that sweater, and it looks great with white jeans and that scarf. Reminds me of Diane Keaton’s wardrobe in Something’s Gotta Give (oh, god, now I’m thinking about Keanu, too!).

  31. January 24, 2014 / 8:25 pm

I do not wear white, I always mess it up. But you look wonderful!

The green parka against all white ensemble is stunning! I love white in the winter, it is lovely!

Love the sweater. Have never thought of wearing all white in the winter. Might be a bit tricky playing with my grandchildren.

I’m far too dirty a person to wear much white (especially pants; I sit down a lot outside). But you look perfectly charming in this – just lovely. You look as though you are enjoying yourself.

  35. January 26, 2014 / 3:17 pm

Great look!!! I love wearing pale colours all year round but haven’t managed so far yet this winter due to all the rain and mud that follows. The pale colours are even better with the parka.

  36. January 26, 2014 / 3:46 pm

Wonderful look! You look cosy and warm. I love Aran knits jumpers – I travelled to Ireland many many years ago and bought a hand knitted one which I wore till it fell apart. I should get a replacement. It is such a wardrobe classic.

  37. January 26, 2014 / 11:51 pm

That is definitely an A, with an A+ for results. Your winter whites have a cool warmth to them with your mix of values and textures. I love your styling! I have to trawl my closet for whites now.

  38. January 27, 2014 / 10:30 am

OMG!!!! I LOVE your winter white look!!! You look so beautifuly chic!
    Mixing textures is a plus.

I like a lot winter white, but I’m not brave enough to wear it here 🙁 It’s a NO white pants on winter small town, mine.

Thank you so much for linking with Très Chic Style Bits.

I don’t do white in general. It washes me out.

I love that sweater and that it has pockets! The jacket looks very English country and the boots add a nice layer of softness and texture.

  40. January 27, 2014 / 8:02 pm

This outfit looks terrific on you! Like you I live in a temperate climate so this type of winter look might be do-able. The only thing is: I’m a bit nervous about trying to do the short pant length with low works on you but will it with me? I’m of the old school that was taught long pant length with boots — maybe I’ll get brave!

Such a lovely, soft look on you. In the northeast, I used to wear my cotton velour off-white jeans in the winter and just accepted the extra laundry I would face when I got home, spot treating all the mud spots on the back legs of the pants that my boots kicked up. No worries now in California!

  42. January 29, 2014 / 6:51 am

You look winter white wonderful. Very appealing, and just right for a California chilly day. It can get cold. Lovely example of how a petite can wear all white and look tiny and amazing.
