Women’s Loafers for Fall: Textural Details and Stylish Comfort

Consider the humble loafer. It’s a classic footwear style that’s comfortable, yet can add polish to casual outfits. And loafers can be the perfect shoe choice for transitional seasons; just add socks when it gets cooler. I’m a big fan of loafers and already have my eye on a couple of pairs to add to my fall wardrobe. Today I’m featuring some women’s loafers with textural details that take them up a notch from the same-old-same-old.

Susan B. wears Dolce Vita Beny loafers in gold metallic with blue jeans.
I love metallics, and this style is also available in silver, and other neutral finishes!

Ok, so I may have already added these…😉 (You can see another way I’ve styled them here.) They’re very soft and comfortable right out of the box! They run true-to-size, but if you have a wide foot, you may want to size up by 1/2.

Textural details will feature prominently in this fall’s selections of shoes and accessories. I love this, as it’s a way to add freshness and subtle interest to a style that’s classic and familiar. In addition to metallics, I’m seeing lots of suede, croc, ruching and stitching details that take a simple look up a notch.

Vince Naomi loafers in dark brown croc effect leather.

Vince Naomi – $350

These are quite good-looking, sleek, and VERY comfortable, with a nicely padded insole and moderate arch support.

This pair in brown is on my short list. (They’re also available in a tempting cream color.) As with most Vince shoes, I suggest going down 1/2 size from your usual.

J.Crew Maison – $228

But I also want to give this style a try. They’re less spendy, and come in 3 colors. (I’d go for the brown, but this navy is nifty, and also a versatile option. And there’s a snake print finish too, for a walk on the wild side…😉)

Vionic Cheryl II lug sole penny loafers metallic snake finish.

Vionic Cheryl II – $134.95

You’ll have to trust me on this, but these are much cuter and more subtle in person than in the online images. They also have Vionic’s signature arch support insole (removable) and are available in Medium & Wide widths.

If metallics or reptile prints aren’t your thing, there are several other finishes available. (Autumns, check out the Dark Khaki/olive green!)

AllSaints Sapphire – $349

Ruching around the toe box is another textural detail that I’m starting to see more for fall. (Inspired, probably, by The Row…) This style has a cool, understated-but-not-generic vibe.

Also available in silver metallic, and a pretty degradé blue suede.

Sam Edelman Lucca croc effect loafers.

Sam Edelman Lucca – $150

This very well-reviewed style comes in a bunch of colors and finishes, but I think this burgundy croc is really fun. On-trend for fall, but not “trendy” …

Vaneli Simply Bit -$174.95

Many of you have requested more options available in Narrow widths, so I was happy to spot some cute ones. This loafer with bit hardware (also in black) is available in both Medium and Narrow widths.

Amalfi by Rangoni Olimpio croc effect loafers in blue.

Amalfi by Rangoni Olimpio – $255

A sleek almond shape toe and croc effect finish zhuzshes up a classic bit loafer style. These are available in Narrow widths too! (Plus 2 other colors.)

Talbot’s Everson Drivers – $139

I’d be remiss if I didn’t include at least one pair in leopard print! These classic drivers in leopard have a gold chain detail and memory foam footbed.

Tory Burch Classic loafers in dark green.

Tory Burch Classic Loafer – $298

Instead of black, why not try a deep, spruce green? (Great for Winters & Blue Autumns!) A friend of mine swears by this style for comfort.

Sam Edelman Loraine – $170

This style really “punches above its weight” and is available in over a dozen finishes. But how gorgeous is this Cabernet patent??

I’ve found these run 1/2 size large, but if you have a wider foot, you may want to take your usual size.

Lambskin insoles.

Ultra-thin lambskin insoles – $15.95/pr

To wear your loafers in sockless comfort, I highly recommend these very thin and lightweight insoles! They were originally recommended by my cobbler, and I use them in any shoes that have smooth synthetic or non-absorbent insoles. Order by your usual shoe size.

Loafers are a style perennial with classic appeal. This fall, look for interesting finishes and textural details that will add some zing to your casual outfits. Let me know which styles and details you like best!

  1. These are all lovely choices but since I wear a narrow it is extremely difficult to find ANY shoe in a narrow size that I can wear. A problem I have had all my life, so when I do find the style I like in a narrow size I usually buy more than one color.

  2. I love loafers so much! I find them perfect for air travel, as they’re easy to slip on and off, comfortable, accommodating, and just plain attractive. The right ones have no seams to bother your toes or joints — and, once square-toed loafers came into being, no squishing of toes into pointed shapes. Even though I think of loafers as being for fall and winter, I find I slip them on year-round. Yay, loafer season!

  3. I’ve also become a fan of loafers—I have a pair that I wear almost constantly (a pair from Wirth) and two pairs of Paul Green loafers—a silver pair with lug soles that looks much like the Vionic Cheryl II that you show, and another in the Paul Green super soft “eco” leather (Natalie Flat)—which is very soft and comfortable. All my loafers have rubber soles, which I always look for when shoe shopping—for various reasons (primarily due to hardwood floors and uncarpeted stairs in my house). And I agree that loafers are ideal for transitional seasons as well as for travel. The Vionic ones are tempting.

  4. Susan, not only are you incredibly au courant,(who cares, but you are!), but you are absolutely speaking my language. I love flats and loafers, always have, always will. Well and a kitten heel and boot–I digress. LOVE the Vionic Cheryl II in black, they are the quintessential jolie laide French footwear, don’t you think? And the Talbots leopard driving shoe, so fun…and then I scrolled a bit further down the page…oh my. I think I must have the Edison Slingbacks in leopard. Now. And many thanks for the link to the insoles, just what I have been needing. You and your sweet pup have a lovely evening. xx

  5. All lovely choices, but sadly, I need the arch and ankle support that only lace-up shoes and boots provide. 🙁
