Working It Out

Variation on a theme…

Duchesse’s post yesterday featuring her colorful silk scarves whetted my appetite for a splash of color.  And I’ve been wanting to try a mix of a silk print scarf with a striped tee since seeing a version of it on the Hermès “J’aime mon carré” website.

I’ve tended to shy away from silk scarves in very bright vivid colors, but with the high contrast black-and-white, a stronger color would work.

Jacket, Pants – Eileen Fisher. Jacket no longer available, pants here.
Striped tee – J.Crew, similar to this one.
Scarf – Hermès, “Les Voitures À Transformation

  1. I like it! (Love pale pink with black–that ballet classic.) You are right about the stripes: they form a sort of graphic bridge or buffer, and with them you could probably go for a much brighter print than might otherwise work. I’ve seen some fun ones in thrift shops (Veras, Echos, great old silk souvenirs, even a $1 Hermes–which my 20 year-old daughter tied to her handbag…)

  2. Duchesse does have a wonderful collection indeed. And from what you’ve shown us your blog, yours are equally lovely.
I love your outfit. Mixing patterns is indeed a delicate art but this combination of a striped tee and a printed scarf is perfect.

  3. I think a striped shirt is such a great choice with a printed scarf. I am not a big one to mix prints, but a perfect striped top (like the one you have on) is a perfect backdrop for a scarf. This outfit, like all of your outfits, is such a great example of simple chic. You’re such an inspiration!

  4. I’ve loved all of this series but this could be my fave so far! Thanks, and you’ve encouraged me to haul out my mariniere and wear with a scarf.

  5. I have to say I really, really like your new haircut. It’s the first thing I notice when I see your photos.

    You’re also looking quite slim.

    The scarf is beautiful.

  6. Love it. When you list your pieces, you should mention the tie you use on your foulard. B/c of the position of the camera, it is sometimes hard to see.

  7. coffeeaddict – thank you! Normally I find mixed patterns too busy for me, but the stripes make it easier.

LuxeBytes – thanks! I’m right there with you on the striped shirt love.

blue roses – thank you! I’m usually hopeless at mixing patterns, but this one just seems effortless.

Allie – I’m usually not one to mix prints either, but this one came together very organically. Thanks so much!

    Rita – thank you!

Jane W – thanks very much! I’m really loving the new ‘do.’

  8. C. – yes, there aren’t many colors that I think mix well with black, but pale pink is definitely one. A $1 Hermès??? Now THAT’s a great find! Thank you!

    hostess – thanks so much!

Sal – thank you! I’m loving these striped tops.

Susan Tiner – thank you! I’m liking the haircut too, once I got over the initial shock of exposed ears. This scarf was one of my first Hermès scarves, and is one of the ones I wear most often.

Kady – so sorry about that! This one was folded diagonally into a triangle and fastened with a horn chain d’ancre scarf ring, ends passed through in opposite directions. Next time I’ll remember to include a close up to show how it’s tied/fastened.

  9. materfamilias – oh yeah, SO ready for Paris!!!

Pam – thanks! I’m usually a dolt at pattern mixing, but the stripes seem to be easier to combine.

    metscan – thanks so much!

Tiffany – thank you! I think it was Imogen who first suggested that stripes can act as a neutral rather than a pattern.

Duchesse – thank you very much! I hope you’ll show us the results of your marinière + scarf!

Susan – thank you so much!

  10. The stripes are so youthful and fun! I might give a striped look a try soon. I really enjoy mixing patterns..it makes fashion more fun.

  11. You look fabulous! I surprised myself by wearing a striped shirt with a patterned scarf the other day – I think it’s the only time I’ve ever mixed ‘patterns’, but I guess the stripes are a sort of neutral …

  12. Everybody likes striped shirts because you can wear them with absolutely everything :-). However, if I may point out something, in your reference photo the scarf isn’t the only point of color. Having just that pink scarf in that sea of black makes it look more dark and somber. Another touch of color would balance things out more. And not just pink, that’s too LA-matchy.

  13. Ha! I’m also wearing a striped shirt and a geometric-design scarf today — will post a picture on my blog when I get back from lunch. (Whenever that is — lunch can last a loooooong time around here.)

  14. Ah yes. I’ve become much more daring in my little French life. It was here that I first mixed a striped t-shirt with a leopard scarf…and you know, it worked! How validating to see that example on this post! Love your rosy accent with the black.

    {And I think I have that Eileen Fisher jacket! I knew I liked you as soon as I met you! ;}

  15. Your scarves are always tied so beautifully! I have a question: How do you keep them in place throughout the day? My silk scarves always seem to slide around throughout the day and never stay they way they were originally tied. I find I’m always fiddling with them and they end up looking quite messy (silly) rather than nonchalantly chic! Thanks in advance to all of you for helping me figure this out. Scarf newbie

  16. Well, you are my go-to foulard blogger! I love seeing the ways you use scarves to bring interest to your outfits.

  17. Semi-Expat – thanks so much!

Marie-Christine – thanks for the tip, will give that a try!

la fourchette – merci beaucoup! oh, love the idea of the striped shirt with leopard, will have to try that one next. How funny that we both have the jacket; it’s a wonderful piece, n’est-ce pas?

Rubiatonta – looking forward to seeing your mix!

    Kady – thank you!

Anonymous – thanks. I’ve experimented quite a bit and found a few ties that seem to stay put pretty well, and those are the ones I use the most. Scarf rings also help; have you tried? I’ll work on a post next week to list my favorite “stay put” ties.
