Yard Makover: Day 4

Work actually didn’t get started in earnest until Tuesday afternoon, but here’s where we were as of Friday afternoon:
The front yard is mostly cleared and the new brick step up from the sidewalk is completed.  The Tasmanian Tree Ferns have been transported to their new home.
Mixing concrete and setting footings for the new deck. These will have to set and harden over the weekend.  Rob says he’ll start working on the rest Monday morning and the deck should be done by Tuesday afternoon.
Here’s what’s left of the old trellis…
The backyard looks REALLY different without it.
But the new one will actually cover more area.
The rental jackhammer was no match for this old concrete…
so they’re coming back tomorrow with a backhoe!
Think we’re going to want to be Somewhere Else while that’s in progress.

  1. Something is really happening, and the tile steps are already there! Great! I think that your plan to go someplace on Saturday is v e r y understandable. Are you planning to take the dogs along?I have heard that it is common in the US to install an electric cable underground, so that dogs can be kept free on yard, as they get electric shocks, if they leave the grounds. Do you have plans to install one?

  2. Metscan – yes, and what we’re learning is that the demolition is what takes the longest! The system you mention is called “invisible fencing” and we’re not planning to install at this point, as we have a fenced and gated backyard where the dogs can play without escaping. My folks’ place up north that’s out in the country and doesn’t have fencing that will contain dogs utilizes this invisible fencing system.

  3. Rita – that’s what we keep telling ourselves, but I think our levels of wine consumption may see a definite spike in the next week or two! 😉

  4. Enjoyed your update and love the new steps…. your front yard seems to already have a different feel…. how exciting for you. Can’t help but feel back pain when I look at the guy with the jackhammer. Can you imagine how his arms and back felt after taking on that concrete?

  5. Good timing–you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your (and your workman’s) labour all summer long. In the meantime, that wine thing is the way to go…

  6. I have always enjoyed your posts but being a mad keen gardener these ones are RIVETTING!!!!! Who got the tree ferns? i hope they survive. Can’t wait to see the end result. Tell me everything about the sort of plants you’ll be installing, don’t leave anything out. Enjoy your Sunday x
