In Transition: Chambray Shirt
A chambray shirt is one of those items that helps carry us through transitional seasons. During warmer weather you can wear open over a tee or tank as a lightweight jacket. Come cooler days, layer it under a sweater. I’ve been looking for ages for one without chest pockets, a) because we Busty™ types don’t need more attention called to that area and b) because I think a style without the pockets can look more polished. This one from Ann Taylor is available in Regular and Petite sizes, online only.

I don’t know why, but this reminds me of back in the 70’s when everyone had chambray shirts with their favorite rock album covers reproduced in embroidery on the back. I recall Elton John’s “Madman Across the Water” album cover was a favorite of many of my peers in high school.
I am so lucky to be able to sew. I can make this for under $15.00. With impeccable finishing! It’s a great shirt.
Linda…you ARE lucky! Personally, I still remember the shame of having to wear the kettle cloth dress to school that i made in home ec in 1969!
I loved the suggested storage box. Looks like the perfect gift for my granddaughters (one freshman in college, one freshman in high school, and three aspiring artists) and their mothers for Christmas. Maybe get one for myself too!
It’s available in tall sizes too! Hooray!
I love this piece – I have two shirts that fit the bill like this one, and they go with just about *anything* else I am wearing. Nice pick.
As a flat-chested gal I can take pockets on blouses, but I they do require extra ironing, which I don’t like.
This one is nice.
I like that it has a clean design, as I have the same issue with chest pockets. So often they seem tacked on there like weird pasties. Distracting to say the least.
Thank you for looking out for the busty among us. We often get forgotten by fashion writers unless its a story about push up bras.
Chambray always looks like prison wear to me.
I thought it was just me. I always think of “Folsom Prison Blues” when I see chambray shirts.
Another option is to carefully unpick and remove the offending pocket.
Next to white blouses, a chambray shirt is the most versatile piece! Love them. This Ann Taylor shirt is especially nice as it isn’t bulky!

The blazer on the left is a magnificent piece of work, classic, and collectable! I like the entire ensemble and can think of a 100 other outfits to create with any of those pieces!
Great post!
Thanks for this tip! Ordered it and it’s just what I was looking for.
