Friday Miscellany: And The Winner Is…

relaxed white linen shirt

One of my travel wardrobe stalwarts during warmer months is an easy linen shirt. Wear it buttoned up over a pair of slim pants, or open as a lightweight topper. This one from Everlane has clean lines (no boob pockets!) and is reasonably priced. I like the company’s policy of “radical transparency” with regard to costs and pricing, and of being very closely involved with the factories (and working conditions) in their production chain.

I’ve been mentally preparing packing lists for my upcoming trip to New York and then our Japan adventure later next month. Shoes…always have to start with the shoes. New York will be easier than Japan, where I understand one often needs to slip one’s shoes off when going inside. It looks as though my leopard loafers will be taking another trip…

Penny Dreadful showtime

We started watching Penny Dreadful a few days ago, and other than the costumes and set design, I’m not entirely impressed. The story line seems to be taking a backseat to reveling in its own cleverness. They’ve worked in many classic horror stories/tropes, though the connections seem tenuous and stretched at times. I think the Frankenstein story (as it’s told here) would have made a fascinating series all on its own.

And the Winner is….

Three yeses for a white linen shirt. Even cotton.

I agree. And always appreciate the easy, classic outfits on this site. (BTW, you’re in the perfect position to compare and review the various Eileen Fisher and other black plants from Nordstrom. Should you ever feel so inclined. . .)

I have always been hesitant to wear linen as I worry about wrinkles – how much does this type of shirt wrinkle? I always do the “ball it up in your fist” move prior to buying things I think might wrinkle, but I would love some linen shirts in our hot and humid weather we are experiencing here!

The beauty of linen is that it wrinkles! No perma press for me!

I want to add good words for Everlane. I have two of their cashmere pullover (v neck) sweaters from a couple of years ago and have found them to be well made and of high quality. While I would hope that they would expand their size range past size 12, I think they are a great company with good clothing designs and very reasonable prices.

Love Everlane! I bought two of the summer-knit sweaters and have worn both quite frequently. I also love their loafers, now that I have figured out that I have to size up one full size.

I’m looking for leopard loafers, too, and have my eye on the J. Crew tassled pair. Just waiting (hoping) for a sale! I did buy the Sole Society shoes you featured and am hanging onto those for the holidays. Love your minimalist styles – that’s where I am headed lately. Thank you for your guidance, oh fearless leader.

Because of your various postings about leopard patterned flats, I went on my own search, which involved ordering and returning several pairs of shoes, including a Taryn Rose version (runs small) and finally finding the right size in a Vionic version. I am now the happy owner of leopard loafers which fit and are very comfortable!
Regarding TV shows, you might consider “Ripper Street” (Victorian London, very serious police procedural+), “Murdoch Mysteries” (smart and amusing, turn of the century Toronto), “River” (mini-series, present day London police procedural) or “The Fall” (present day Northern Ireland serial killer).
Thanks for presenting a superior blog.

Thought I had posted a reply to this earlier, but it was apparently lost….fans of British type shows should run, not walk, to Netflix and watch the Miss Fisher Mysteries. It is actually set in post WWI Australia, but has the feel of a BBC show. Miss Fisher is a complex character, a feisty amateur detective and very independent woman. I would watch it for the fashions alone, though….readers of this blog will appreciate the fabulously elegant clothes!

I love that show and have actually read the books it’s based on. Good call!

I love Everlane but have come to realize that their shirts are all 4 inches too long on me (I’m 5’3″ and shrinking)!

I bought the leopard loafers from Fitflops on Amazon for my recent trip to Quebec. Super comfy!

I want to like linen, in fact I have several linen blouses. However, I really don’t like how messy it looks after a few minutes of wear. I prefer a cleaner look. No more linen purchases for me.

Do you wash this yourself and hang to dry when traveling ? I am concerned about drying time and wrinkles from wringing the shirt out.

Hi Shirley, what I do with my linen shirts when traveling is to hand wash and then “broomstick” twist them overnight, then on a hanger to complete drying. Linen will always wrinkle, but this way the wrinkles look more intentional. I describe the process in this post: https://unefemme.net/2016/03/lightweight-layers-travel-wardrobe.html

And another upside to linen is that it dries MUCH faster than cotton! 🙂

Yes on the ‘no boob pockets’, very difficult to find. But would have like to see someone WITH boobs modeling so can see the fit. And it sounds like many of the companies listed in the comments think you’re a plus size if you over a 10 and have boobs of any kind. Sorry your not a Penny fan, have you seen ‘ Vikings’ ?

Would love to try Everlane since I’ve heard such good things.

I’ve been transitioning my base colors from black/grey to brown/cream. My leopard flats have been a wonderful way to put together outfits that mainly consist of black/brown/cream. They get so much wear that a second pair of loafers would be great. Actually, I think a warm brown with black looks great so I will be hanging on to some of my black stuff.

Although it has its faults, “Penny Dreadful” is worth sticking with – yes, it can be cheesy, but that’s what the original penny dreadfuls were all about! It is worth continuing for Eva Green alone (and after 3 seasons, it is over, so not like you have to commit to dozens and dozens of episodes).

I always start with the shoes for travel! Love those leopard loafers!
