Because the holidays aren’t over yet…

…at least not until after the Superbowl!

I’ve been working on a post about holidays and family traditions, but the end result is turning out to be something entirely too maudlin, so instead I’m going to share one of the few holiday traditions that’s survived my crazy family…my grandmother’s Chex Mix recipe! (Trust me, this is SO much better than the pre-made stuff!)

3 cups each Corn, Rice, and Wheat Chex
2 cups Cheerios*
1-1/2 cups pretzel sticks (the little ones)*
1 cup Planter’s cocktail peanuts
1 stick butter
3 TBSP Worcestershire sauce
1-1/2 tsp. Lawry’s seasoned salt
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. onion powder

Preheat oven to 250F.

In the biggest bowl you have, mix the cereals, nuts and pretzels.

Melt the butter in a pan over low heat, and stir in the remaining seasonings. Toss with the cereal mix, then dump into the biggest roasting pan you can find and put in the oven. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread out on paper towels to cool. Enjoy with a glass of Scotch like Grandma did, or with a beverage of your choice. Bon appetit!

*If you really want to take it to the next level, before roasting see how many of the cheerios you can impale with a pretzel stick without breaking either one. Do this before the Scotch.

  1. A treat that takes me home again! May I add, Mom used bacon fat as well as butter (half hand half to make same total amount). Lend a smoky delicious note to what she called “Nuts and Bolts”- and addictive either way. The boxed stuff is disgusting!

  2. Duchesse and Deja Pseu, we must be in the same generation, as my mother makes almost exactly the same mix! The only slight difference – she drinks gin and tonic and there’s no bacon fat in the mix.

I love it and completely agree, it’s much better than anything store bought.

  3. My Mom’s holiday salty snack is “dilly crackers” (which my Gran also made). Absolutely completely addictive!

For those who wish to join in the fun: 2 boxes oyster crackers, 1 packet dry Ranch dressing mix, 1t garlic powder, 2T dried dill, 1/4 cup olive oil. Mix all the dry stuff with the oil, then pour over the crackers and toss. Bake on a jelly roll pan at 250 for 20 minutes.

  4. I remember those.

I have been meaning to tell you that I am soooo disappointed in you regarding those sequined shorts. The minute I met you I said to myself: “Now there is a fearless fashion forward fille.”

(I’m sure you’re just worried about the dry cleaning after frolicking wherever one frolics in such garb.)

  5. Off topic a bit: Speaking of the holidays, I remember the bracelets you featured in November. I was so attracted to the Talbots one. I was able to order it yesterday from the Sale section. Pave bracelets come to those who wait.

  6. Duchesse – mmmm, that sounds like a great combo.

Sal – doesn’t it though? The bagged stuff is way too salty and garlicky.

Northmoon – gin & tonic works too. 😉

  7. Rubiatonta – that sounds yummy! I love the flavor of dill.

What a Splurge – oh, that’s great! I figured those would sell out, so glad you were able to get one on sale.

    Lindy – I will, thanks!

  8. Miss Janey – me too! I have to give it away pronto.

kanishk – do you have any original comments or are you just spamming?

tishjett – yeah, that’s the ticket. It was the dry cleaning bills I was worried about. 😉

  9. LPC – tastes and smells are so viscerally evocative, aren’t they?

WendyB – that’s half the fun!

Fritnancy – my family’s relationship with Lawry’s is deep and of considerable duration. I always have some around.

  10. This sounds extremely yummy especially to a lover of savoury ‘bits’ with a drink (or two!) and, after all, you have pointd out – it’s still the holidays!!

  11. I´m glad that I have never tasted your speciality. I could be hooked. With all these Xmas chocolates and extra eating, my clothes feel tight on me. I hate the feeling. I just took clothes for sale to a thrift shop, clothes once again bought in a haste. Well, I received a small sum of something I had earlier left in and just had to buy ( although I hate sales ) a gorgeous gray fur stole -30% off- by Christian Dior. I love it. And, since the weather seems to continue way under zero°C, I think I made a good bargain. And-this stole is not too tight 😉

  12. My mom makes some that is similar but has kix and celery salt. She gives it out come Christmas time, and she’s actually been able to negotiate things with our family doctor because a week after he got his first 2 batches he was out and needed more!

I love this stuff, but dang if it doesn’t kill my hips!
