The Best Lightweight Cardigans for Travel and Seasonal Transition

As I often tell my color and style clients, “buy it when you find it.” Right now, at the tail end of summer, is the perfect time to pick up lightweight layers for fall transition. These versatile pieces are easy to pack, comfortable to wear, and ideal for travel. A lightweight cardigan is my year-round MVP: it keeps me cozy on chilly flights, layers effortlessly over warm-weather outfits, and bridges the gap between seasons when the weather can’t make up its mind.

Lightweight & Travel-Friendly Cardigans

Cardigans are a style perennial, though shapes, lengths, and details may change from season to season. For travel, I recommend natural fibers like wool, cashmere, cotton which will be comfortable in a range of temperatures. Some texture (like cable knit) is fine, but I’d avoid bulkier pieces which will be heavier and take up more room in your suitcase.

I’m seeing lots of classic cardigans now, but also some with interesting details and textures. Here are my personal favorites, and a few more that caught my eye, all of which will be travel-friendly options.

  1. As someone who lives in the Middle East, where today it is over 100 degrees F and expected to get hotter as the week progresses, it is hard to imagine layering a sweater at the moment! At the most, I look for cotton t-shirt weight long sleeve or poncho type wraps. But I will take a look at the 100% cotton options you’ve shared for the dead of winter here!
Thanks for your content, which I love and have been following for a few years.

  2. Hello! Team merino would like to enter the convo! Merino wool-thin, warm, less itchy than cashmere, less expensive, doesn’t stink with multiple wears (hence great for travel). Uniglo has some classic merino pieces right now-classic cardigans, short sleeve sweaters (can make a set), long sleeve crew and polo sweaters…all under $50. Mostly classic colors with a few that are great for winters. I bought a lot!

  3. Hi Susan, I am following your posts lately and thinking many of my clothes may be out of style. I have several beautiful cashmere long cardigans—which I love, but everything you are showing is cropped or hip length. I guess this is to work with wide legged trousers. I am just a smidge taller than you. I have some blouses that are more like a tunic length and I am thinking they are passe’ as well. What are your thoughts on this?

    1. Hi Kay, while it’s true that wider leg bottoms and shorter tops are currently more prevalent, there is no single silhouette that’s “in” or “out.” What works best for anyone depends on their proportions and preferences. If you want to update your look without replacing your current wardrobe, think accessories: shoes, jewelry, bags.

  4. I can understand why you cannot stop raving about that cute J. Crew set. It suits you like a T.

  5. Thank you for your well-edited cardigan suggestions. I have several Banana Republic ribbed merino wool v-neck cardigans from season’s past that are so versatile. This year I added the J Crew red featherweight cashmere cardigan & shell set and hope it they will be workhorses for home & travel.

  6. Hi Susan….a few questions
Could you please remind me what a blue spring is? Does it share colors with another season?
I love the featherweight cashmere. Could you wear your cardigan buttoned as a top in the size you have or would you need to go up?
    Thx!

    1. Hi Linda, a Blue Spring is on the coolest end of the Spring palette. While none of the colors cross over with the cool season palettes, they can sometimes wear colors like heather/lavender from other palettes.

Regarding the cardigan, I wear this size (Small) buttoned up as well as open.

  7. Susan,

I’ve read mixed reviews on the Featherweight Cashmere from J Crew. A few people have mentioned small holes appearing after a couple of wearings, and another mentioned a lot of shrinkage after washing.
May I ask how yours is holding up?

And, which colors available are good for Springs? I get confused sometimes, on the yellows and greens especially.
    Many thanks,
    Linda

    1. Hi Linda, I’ve had no issues with holes or shrinkage. The colors that will work for Springs are: Red Arroyo, Garden Rose, Gentle Glover, and of course the brown Leopard print.

      1. Helpful, thank you!

There’s a new color in that cardigan called Pressed Avocado. What’s your impression of that one?

        1. Hi Linda, you’re welcome! I haven’t yet seen that one in person. It looks like a more acid yellow, but I’ll report back once I’ve seen it up close.
