Late Summer Style Refresh: Pieces to Wear Now & Later

Fall styles may be trickling in, but here in warmer climates, it’ll be a while before we’re reaching for sweaters and boots. In the meantime, I’m focusing on pieces that feel fresh now, yet will transition seamlessly as the seasons shift: lightweight layers, rich textures, and versatile silhouettes that bridge the gap between summer and fall.

Lightweight layers for summer-to-fall transition

We’ve had a cooler-than-normal summer, but the heat has finally arrived, so lightweight styles in natural fibers are key. I’m keeping my eyes open for pieces that won’t feel too summery come September, but will still be comfortable on warm days.

Many of you have mentioned that any sleeves are too warm where you live, so I’m featuring another sleeveless top. This one is a new style from Frank & Eileen, a cotton knit tank with a collar. (I love a collar, both to add structure and to pop to keep the sun off my neck). The fabric breathes, and doesn’t cling. This top is available in several colors, and has an oversized fit, so you may want to size down.

I’ve styled it here with Eileen Fisher textured cotton lantern pants, and have added a silk scarf as a belt. (You could also wear as a head scarf in the warmer months.) The versatile neutral colors will play well with other fall pieces, and the textures add some richness and depth. (See below for suggestions for those with cool color palettes.)

Once the weather cools, I’ll add a lightweight jacket, and swap out the sandals for closed shoes (I’m loving these velvet friulane flats!).

Lightweight Layers for the Summer-to-Fall Transition

Stripe button-front vest – $49.99

Wear this one now as a top, later as a mid-layer over a tee or shirt. Also in red stripe here.

Sleeveless organic linen shirt – $71.40

Here’s another breezy top that will layer nicely under a sweater or jacket in a few weeks. Sizes XXS-3X, also in black & white.

Relaxed cotton pull-on pants – $100

Navy is a year-round neutral. These easy pants are available in several neutral shades in Regular, Petite, and Tall sizes. Wear now with a tank or tee and sandals, later with a sweater and sneakers, flats, or boots.

Silk square scarf – $68

Scarves are still one of my favorite ways to “dial up” a simple outfit. Wear now as a headscarf, belt, or tied to the handle of your bag, and around the neck once the weather cools.

Open weave flats – $130

Keep your feet cool in summer, add a light sock come fall.

Convertible woven leather bag – $129.90

A woven leather bag is perfect to bridge that summer to fall season. This one has nice interior organization but is still lightweight. Several colors available.

As we ease into the next season, I’m all about thoughtful updates that extend the life of my wardrobe. Lightweight layers, rich textures, and a few well-chosen accessories can go a long way toward making your style feel fresh, without rushing into full-on fall. What are your go-to pieces for this in-between season?

  1. Hi Susan: love all your choices. I found a silk scarf in Autumnal colors that will transition nicely and then, of course, also have the Castanohel scarf! I got the EF lantern pants in the ‘organic cotton ripple material’. They were an MVP in my recent travel wardrobe! I’m considering that taupe crossbody bag from Quince but wondering if it’s too large for me….. In the meantime, would you do a review of luggage for us? I think you’ve done it before so I should hunt your site–I have a Briggs & Riley kevlar black carry on that I’d like to replace. The black has to go. I’m not sure that I like the idea of a hard case, but I could be convinced. 😉

  2. Yes, this is how to dress for summer! Thanks, Susan.
I do wish, though, that clothing designers would consider those of us with cool coloring. Most items with ivory or “natural” tones are so unflattering. I have the impression that even those in the fashion industry don’t understand the concept of color (as in seasons). Even the models aren’t wearing their most flattering colors.

    1. It’s so true what you say about clothing brands, and which colors they put on the models! I was just over at the mall where I saw some great cool palette colors showing up in the new collections, and will be sharing them soon.

  3. Hi Susan,
Thanks for all your great advice. I’m so happy to let you do the research and I get to reap the benefits. That said, what was the brand of the socks you recommended recently? I thought I had saved the post but it is not to be found.
    Thank you.
