A Petite-Friendly Summer Style Formula That Works
Summer has always been the hardest season for me to dress for. During these warmer months, comfort is non-negotiable, but I still want to feel put-together. It takes a little more thought, but finding that balance between cool and polished gets easier with the right pieces. This summer, cropped cotton and linen button-front shirts have been the (petite-friendly) Hero pieces in my wardrobe.
Petite gals, this one’s for us! I found this cropped cotton poplin shirt at WNU in London in May, and find it’s a great topper for my barrel-leg and wide-leg pants. Yes, it’s quite short in the front. I’ve styled it here over one of my Eileen Fisher silk tanks* with my (favorite!) Ruti jeans, and Vince jelly sandals. It also looks great worn open over a tank.
*these are my go-to base layer for travel. They’re lightweight and washable. But if silk is too hot where you live, try the linen jersey.
These jeans are a lighter-weight denim with some stretch. Because they aren’t fitted in the leg, they allow for airflow, and I find them comfortable on all but the hottest days. A belt is a small touch that adds definition and makes my outfits look more finished, without adding heat. Here’s another look with these Ruti jeans.
More Petite outfit ideas with cropped shirts
Cropped shirts like these can be a real boon for Petite women. They add structure, and help balance proportions with fuller pants and skirts (without needing to be tucked in). Many of these styles can run large or oversized, so you may want to size down.

Dressing for summer doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style for comfort, even if you’re petite. Cropped shirts like these one offer the perfect balance of ease and polish, and can really help pull an outfit together without extra bulk or heat. If you’ve been struggling with what to wear on warm days, I hope these looks give you some ideas to try. What petite-friendly summer pieces have you found? Let me know in comments!

I do not like the cropped shirts. they cut me in half and make me look shorter
Love the cropped shirt but wearing a tank underneath negates the need for summer weight clothing. Obviously, the shirt is too short in front.
That brown top looks so good on you. Love that outfit.
I am all for boxy, wide and short but mine need to be a little longer, just below the waist as I am tall with a short torso.

Love these cropped shirts! The J Crew version is my favorite. I also have a denim/chambray one I like to wear open as a little jackets. I feel like the longer downs overwhelm me.
I bought 3 cropped 3/4 sleeve shirts on a trip to Paris in May. Two are linen stripes. Love them all – I’m short waisted so the shape adds a flattering touch. I didn’t realize why they worked so well til I read your post. Thanks Susan!!
I love the look on you, but as someone with a full bust, the cropped shirt hangs straight down off the bust and makes me look like a cylinder or a fire hydrant…. Not the look I’m going for. Wearing it open needs another layer in the summer, something else I’d rather not do. For me, I’ll pass on this.
Those tops look great on you, Susan, but, like Nancy, I don’t think they work for me. At 5’2″ I love the shorter lengths, but I’m as flat chested as a tortilla and the one curve I do have (besides the postmenopausal tummy – drat!) is the difference between my waist and hip measurements, which is obliterated by boxy tops. Consequently, I find myself scouring secondhand stores (brick and mortar as well as online) for more fitted petite button downs. Better for the planet, but hardly the cutting edge of fashion!
Greetings from Ireland! Tried to follow your travel formula, but since this is a 2 week trip needed to plan for rainy weather!❤️your petite post, but could you please plan one for the heavier ladies. Those short blouses & popular jackets just don’t do anything for me! Suggestions??
Thanks for the cropped top suggestions. I got the Alex Mill top in the green/white stripe- love! I really appreciate the shorter tops so I can stop figuring out what to do as in a full tuck, half tuck, tied or whatever. I’m 5’4”. I appreciate your posts and sharing. You got me started on KULE tees 2 summers ago and I still order them too.
Thank you, Susan, for demonstrating that it is the proportions that count for petites. I am a little shorter than you and love the cropped button up’s with wide-ish or barrel leg pants! It is summer in Seattle and I am getting a lot of wear out of the J Crew “gamine” short sleeved white shirts (poplin,, not see-thru with nude colored bra) and the Quince linen short sleeved tops, also no need for tank in bright or dark colors). Great modeling.
All of the cropped shirts have long sleeves so it seems as though they’re just swapping out the extra fabric from the waist to the arms. That’s too much fabric in hot, sticky weather in my opinion. Adding a tank is negating any extra cooling the shortness might give. But, then again, I live where “hot summer” means going for lightweight fabric and the less of it the better.
Hi Linn, in the last two outfits, I’m wearing the shirts on their own, without base layers.
Hi Susan! I’m loving these cropped tops too, although I still have a love of the oversized poplin shirts as well. Did you get the small size in the belt or the medium? (You and I wear the same size pants/trousers). Thanks!
Hi Sally, I wear size Small in the belt.
Thanks Susan! I ended up ordering the medium–might have to exchange it! The outfit is great. I love those EF silk tanks. It’s actually time for me to get another ivory/bone colored one. I’m really grateful for the trend in cropped tops and it feels as though more clothing lines are offering petites. Yay for that!
A lot of us run hot and live in increasingly hotter places. There is no way I could wear jeans, long sleeves (even linen), or layers for half of the year. Your outfit is cute for winter, though.
Susan –
I just have call out this great brown shirt on you. Best outfit ever.
I love a cropped or shorter shirt with my barrel jeans, and wide leg pants but….finding the right length, the right volume has been hard. I also didn’t want long sleeves for summer. If that style is out there, I couldn’t find it! LOL!
So,,, I took a shirt I like to my tailor. Had it shortened, sleeves removed. And voila! My perfect cropped shirt. No need for a tank (light weight cotton, no see through) and not too much volume in the body. Cost was much, much less than a new shirt! Just an idea…..
I am 5’2″ and short waisted with a large bust. Generally speaking collared shirts don’t sit well on my body and tend to slide back so I am always tugging on them; shorter tops just add to the problem. I have slim legs and hips and disguising them with barrel leg pants and adding a short top essentially disguises my best features and emphasizes the worst. This is not a look that I will be adopting.
Hi Susan, you look great in those tops – especially the red stripe with the linen pants which also seems the most summery look to me. However as a slightly more busty petite, I cannot pull off the current style of cropped shirts even though they are technically “petite friendly” . I have found the boxy and dropped shoulder look paired with wide legged pants makes me look large all over! I prefer more fitted shirts that, even if longer, can be tucked or partially tucked at the waist of wider pants so that I can still get those proportions right.
I’m tall (and short waist) and I have found that if the jeans are high waist then a crop top length is something I prefer, it actually creates a waistline for me in a good way. I don’t have to worry about any skin showing in the mid-drift area. I prefer mostly short or cap sleeves in the heat of summer but there are times when the long sleeves come in handy (I just pay attention to the type of fabric).
I love your choices reflecting some great on trend fashion options. Thanks
I live in the Northeast where it can get pretty steamy and I’ve found that as a petite the Frank and Eileen Emma dress works for me, particularly since the hem is raw edge and I could easily just lop off a few inches. The dress is a slimmer fit than some others and doesn’t overwhelm me. it’s throw and go with elbow length sleeves that I roll once. and it doesn’t need a slip. I’m usually not a fan of raw edges for myself but I do like this one.
Long sleeve shirts – even with rolled up sleeves- are too hot in Florida. The jeans too even if a lighter weight. Light cotton pants and linen work much better.
Hi Susan,
Love these looks on you, especially the cropped brown shirt! I’m intrigued by the Eileen Fisher tanks, and agree they look good for travel. Since we wear the same size, can you share what size you wear in the tank please?
Hi Kathy, thanks! I usually take an XS or Petite S (when available) in the tanks.
Nicely worded essay, Susan. I do love the shorter version of an untucked blouse. I’m looking for ways to do without belts for daily summer wear unless I’m “dressing up.”
BTW, after all these years I’m still enjoying your fresh take on style.
Thanks so much, Ann!
Susan, love your style!
I’m 5’1″, and feel not many retailers here in the UK cater for petites.
My main problem in styling is making sure I don’t look too voluminous/overwhelmed on top: inverted triangle, UK size 12/14 on top half, size 10 on bottom half. I’ve recently swopped all my slim leg jeans for straight legs, I have a few wide legs pants but require close fitting tops so the look is balanced. I love linen and have many pieces, latest was two petite linen shirt dresses from Lands End, and Boden’s petite linen shirts.
