Tuesday Miscellany: A Coastal Cool Weekend Capsule & More
It finally feels like we’re inching toward summer. I woke up yesterday morning with the urge to tidy and re-organize my closet for the warmer months. That means putting lighter clothing and shoes in the most accessible sections, and laundering my heavier sweaters to get ready to store. (I wash in a lingerie bag, with a special cashmere shampoo, and store in a zipped storage bag with moth-repellent sachets.)
As the saying goes, “June is busting out all over!”

Our neighborhood jacarandas have hit peak bloom, and even though they’re more than a little messy when those blooms drop, I still love them. (Just don’t park your car underneath them!)

And my trumpet vines are going to town too! The bees and other pollinators love these!
A cool coastal weekend capsule
Switching gear into summer has me thinking about taking some short road trips. Many of you have asked for more cool palette capsules, so here’s a day-to-dinner weekend capsule in navy, white, and blue.

TOTE BAG | PANTS | SKIRT | BRACELET | SNEAKERS | SANDALS
(Click image to see all items shown.)
Use this as a starting point and add whatever pieces complement your itinerary: a swimsuit, a sun hat, rubber beach shoes, etc.
This week’s reader favorites

COTTON SWEATER | SANDALS | STRIPED TOP | LINEN PANTS
(Click image to see all items.)
It looks like many of you (based on your clicks) are adding some summer shirts and tops to your wardrobe.
Are you planning any road trips this summer? Where will you be going?

Thank you for this! I love snappy blue and white for summer! I would add pops of fuchsia or pine green this capsule. You did one like that last summer or the summer before that I have saved and still refer to! I think it was a “coastal” look for winters ;).
You’re very welcome! Yes, some Winter emerald and holly green would work, as well as Fuchscia and Magenta.
Thank you for your outfit ideas! I have one issue I hope you can address – the tank top. I sometimes want a sleeveless top to wear under a jacket but find tank tops of cotton or synthetic product show all my bulges. I have a few linen ones for summer but really need some all year tops. Thanks, Susan Makurath, Philadelphia
Hi Susan, thanks for the suggestion; I’ve been meaning to feature some tank tops, so will include some in different fabrications.
No road trips planned, only a European holiday. Absolutely love the navy, white and blue palette, which will form the basis of my travel wardrobe, except the blue cardigan I have is quite a bright blue, and not sure whether to take the soft yellow instead. Thanks for the great ideas. Hope you have another jaunt planned soon
Good morning from the Mid Atlantic Area…..I ordered the outfit you were wearing in a picture from previous post (the eyelet shirt is a winner and I usually don’t have a problem with 100% cotton shrinking when from India, but I’m not familiar with Treasure and Bond brand). It says tumble dry low and I was wondering if that is okay or should I hang dry….I did wash in linen bag and put in with regular load of wash. I’m still waiting for the BR linen pants…..Thanks for any feed back if anyone has an answer.
BTW that top is a good pick (dress up or down) and decent quality for the price point….thanks.
Hi Robin, thanks! I usually hang most of my clothes to dry, to save energy and help them last longer, but I don’t see any reason this top couldn’t go in the dryer (on medium heat).
I hope to spend a long weekend in SoCal this summer. Would you be willing to share your favorite spots in the LA area — boutiques, art, nature, and general exploring (i.e., not theme parks and tourist traps)?
Yes, I’ll work on something for the near future!
The flowers are lovely. I have a trumpet vine and it is an amazing grower. Love the blues in the capsule.
Love the blues in these outfits, and the purple in the trees! We don’t have purple trees in New England! I’ll probably go to Cape Cod and Newport for summer day trips and short trips.
I guess it depends on tree vs shrubs, but take a look at lilacs, rhododendron, wisteria, weigela, azalea … The rhododendrons are stunning this year, and some here (Newport area) are well over 20 feet high. I also have a purple Rose of Sharon that I love.
Susan, your photos are gorgeous as always. Thank you!
Taking a road trip to the Grand Tetons in July. Can you believe we’ll be tent camping?! At 70? We must be crazy!!! Looking more forward to the trip out there and back from Illinois. Will spend those nights in hotels, more my style. Trying to put together my best hiking outfits. Cool, comfortable but hopefully adding a stylish element or two.
I love this breezy capsule wardrobe for summer in blue. Could you make us one for warm coloring, like beige or olive?
Beautiful blossom.

Perfect selection. This is exactly the way that I dress. I love to wear skirts in the summer rather than shorts. perfect weekend or everyday look for me.
