Déjà printemps??

Spring 2011 collection….guess whose??

Yep.  Talbots.  Pictures from Style.com.

Spring collections usually do *nothing* for me.  Fall is my season.  But these, oh la la!  The full skirts and colorful pumps are reminiscent of one of my favorite movie wardrobes, that of Vianne (played by Juliette Binoche) in the movie Chocolat.  I’m also intruiged by the LBD and the some of the jackets.

Wish I could find a better pic of some of her clothing, but hey, Johnny Depp!!

  1. I was just settling in to Fall..Is is just me, or does this seem a bit early for a Spring preview? Still, something to look forward to. Loving the basics with a twist. Wish they’d lose the comments about “grandma” when they speak of their prior life. Some of us knew they had “it” all along and I still get compliments on my vintage Talbots items.

  2. Not Talbots!!!! I can hardly believe it!

These are so wearable, I might even consider a skirt next spring if I can style it like these. Not too ‘girly’ but grown woman feminine. Love it, thanks for sharing this.

  3. I really must check out Talbots…I like the vibe it feels like Mad Men styles have infiltrated these designs…
Chocolate is one of my favourites too….love Juliette Binoche in this film, her hair and wardrobe are delicious…as is Johnny Depp!

  4. Oh the first two images are stunning and I’d love to get that yellow jacket, I always play safe but I’d like to live dangerously with that purchase!

  5. I too am loving the dresses and cardi/skirt. But in the stores, the quality is still all over the place.
Superb styling. They are looking like J, Crew for a generation older.

  6. Enfin the full skirts show up at the mid-price point. However, I recetnly took my daughter in to our local Talbots, based on your posts, and in person as Duchesse says it’s still not quite there. It would be great if the Spring goods finally pulled it all together.

  7. I’ve been a big fan of Talbots for a long time. I bought my first “expensive” dress (well, it was expensive to me, at the time) there; a navy coatdress with white trim and brass buttons. A-dorable! But I’ve always realized, as I’m sure many of you do, that there is a frump factor with some of the clothes. You just have to shop carefully, because there are always good classic designs, as well as cute, trendier items. I am very glad, though, that they seem to be trying to lose the frump factor entirely and ramp up the stylish.

By the way, Pseu, have you ever done a post on Top Fashion Movies? I haven’t seen Chocolat, but now want to, to check out the clothes. Other than anything with Audrey Hepburn, and several Grace Kelly films, what are great movies for fashion fans to watch?

  8. I agree with Duchesse. Talbots quality is all over the place. I live close to one of their large mall stores in Dallas and pop in fairly often to check things out.

So far, this season, I’ve only bought a grosgrain belt with sparklies on it.

From what I have seen, the quality is iffy. Even their classic white blouses have cheap looking covered buttons on them—in every style!

I tried on several pairs of their cute shoes, but once again, the quality (and fit) were just not there.

Until they up the quality of the fabric they use, I’m afraid the clothing will simply not live up to the beautiful photographs we are seeing.

I’m close to an hourglass figure, so I still have a waist at this age, but still wonder if Talbots is trying for a slightly younger age group than ours.

I DO love the look of some of these clothes and will watch with interest when they come into the store.

Does anyone know how we could find an address for the appropriate person at Talbots to write about the quality issues?

  9. Love that skirt in the second photo — is it denim? If so, I might be in love…

I’m thirding (or fourthing) the concern about spotty quality, though. At the price point, these should be darn close to impeccable. It’s not Zara, after all.

  10. I like the ankle pants with the cream top, but can easily duplicate with things I already have. Love the styling on these, but clothes with waists are not kind to me or many others “of a certain age.”

  11. The clothes look nice on a slim young model, though they are not ” my kind of clothes “.I´d really have to see these IRL to give my final verdict.

  12. I realized that the link I posted takes you to the denim dress — what I really liked is the last picture in the slideshow, the gray cardigan over the white skirt.

The whole collection is worth looking at.

  13. Love the styling of the layout. Like Frugal Scholar, I think I can replicate the look with items I already own, especially the cropped trousers. Happy to see they will still be around for spring.
Nice use of elongating nude shoes as well.

  14. I’m not impressed. These are not styles that most women can wear. As a couple others here said, they only work on willowy young people. I see nothing good here for women of a certain age. If you thought Talbot’s was frumpy before, try on one of those full skirts and see how that looks. Those skirts do make the waist look smaller, only because they make the hips look enormous.

  15. I like those fun skirts – I don’t think they work on me, but they sure look good on the model.

Will check out Talbots – it’s been ages since I’ve shopped there.

  16. I think that SOME of the pictured styles will work for women of a certain age: the black short sleeved dress, the brown print sleeveless dress, the yellow print skirt with short sleeved sweater.

i can’t see most women our age in the full skirts. I bought a full skirt last spring and have worn it, but did not feel completely comfortable in the look.

  17. itztru – yeah, me too about the “grandma” comments. I’ve been shopping at Talbots since my 30’s, and often get complimented on my T items, even from the younger fashionistas.

Northmoon – “grown woman feminine”…YES! That’s what I find so appealing here.

Sal – I can really see you in that dress!

Genuine Lustre – wasn’t that the coolest wardrobe? I can’t believe how impossible it is to find pictures of any of her ensembles head-to-toe.

hostess – the more wasp-waisted, full-skirted look is definitely making a comeback, not just from Talbots.

Frugal Scholar – I think these could work if the skirts have a yoke, and then are worn with a cardi over as in the first pic. But yes, other than the skirts a lot of these can be accomplished with items we already have.

  18. Tabitha – concur, that yellow jacket will definitely be one to check out once it’s in stores.

Belle – I love that look too, and would probably try it as long as the skirt fabric isn’t too stiff.

Duchesse – it’s true what you’ve said about quality. I’ve seen quality on many of their basics go down, but some items (cotton cardis, outerwear, scarves) are quite good for the price point. It’s definitely a mized bag.

LPC – I’m finding that I’m not liking a lot of the fabrics they’ve been using, which look and feel cheap. It’s really hit-and-miss when they used to have a pretty consistent level of quality. I’m hopeful they’ll eventually work out the bugs.

metscan – true, and who knows how these have been altered and pinned for the shoots?

Jill Ann – I’ve also picked up some really great pieces there in the past, and it’s true that it’s always been hit-and-miss with the styling. I keep hoping they’ll hit the mark with both the styling and the quality.

That’s a great idea for a post, will have to do some research!

  19. Susan – Talbots has been quite upfront about courting women in the 30’s age group. Which is OK as long as they don’t abandon the rest of us. I hope they can get their quality back up to what it was. I don’t have an address, but I’ll see if I can find one, and maybe we can start a letter writing campaign!

Rubiatonta – yes, I think it is denim.

Sisty – I think Juliette is probably shorter and much shorter-waisted than the models, but I think it’s an interesting question about what looks “better.” May have to ponder and post on that one…

    Terri – cool!

Fuji – me too. I’ve had nude pumps on my list forever, and may have to get serious about finding some.

Rita – what I’m hoping to see in addition to the gathered skirts, are slightly fuller but bias-cut knee-length skirts. Those I think would be a happy medium than many more of us could wear. The trick is in the drape.

Aunt Snow – I’m not going to write off the look altogether; as I said above if I can find a version that’s not as gathered and drapes well, I think it could be flattering if styled right.

Susan – I’m ingrigued by that black dress too. Love that the pleats seem to be stitched down over the hips, so not too much fullness there.

Arabella – I have to believe these pieces have been altered and pinned to within an inch of their lives for the photo shoot. I’ve found that Talbots pieces are not cut to fit as snugly as they appear in the catalogs and website.

  20. Some of the pieces would fall into my usual style shopping bag but I’m not sure I believe what I see. The clothes have a ‘sprayed on’ look about them, especially the trousers. In fact, the hair might be sprayed on too!

  21. These looks are for me. In l’age (as I like to say) one needs a little fabric in the skirt and these do the trick. The pencil skirts are not for me – love the look – hate the restrictions. Thanks for keeping me abreast of what’s on at Talbots. I like those folks.
